Firstly, I really feel for Paulsen, being a Dad of a sweeper keeper with the #goalkeeperunion and all that. It was a poor back pass, to his weaker foot, which put him under unnecessary pressure. Lots of people don't understand the benefits to having a keeper who can play with his feet and will think that's why you shouldn't do it.

decent keepers have to be confident on both feet

I agree, all I said was I felt for him.

I know what it does to a keeper when something like that happens and he wont need people to tell him it was a mistake.

We had no touch in the middle of the park, every time the received a ball it bounced two yards away... and the lack of movement was equally bad, even against 10 men they didn't seem to want to find space.

I think its part the players selected, but also the tactics. It just feels like this is a traditional NZ set up where we don't really believe in ourselves and our ability.

Can Des take every age group team please?

Thanks Andrew. I have no doubt there is good young talent about but find it frustrating the extent the selections were weighted.

Hi Terry, Nik here.

Interesting metrics you talk about, is this public knowledge?

Also interesting you believe you can adequately judge on players creative ability or not based on one game, without taking in to account other 'metrics' in that game!? For example for 'creative midfielder' to begin to create, they need quality ball from back and to pass forward they need to have options forward. In Angola game, there was hardly options on the left, when some passes went forward on this side (from Marko or others), ball was lost as the full back or forward did not manage to get the ball for whatever reason - commitment, ability, speed, strength?
Marko's football brain and creativity is judged by people that understand football in its entirety, and have followed his progress over many games, trainings, years. So him being placed in positions on the team or field has some science to it.

In saying all this, i (Marko's father) am always his biggest critic, and he has definitely not had his best game against Angola. Even though, with not even close to his best performance, please compare all the 'metrics" across the team that played, and you will find the truth on why he is rated by people that know.

Uncharacteristically for me, i am posting reply, as these comments are rich coming from you, singling one player, implying issue but not looking at your own or the rest of the problems on the field (or not seeing this, in which case your opinion is even less important!), where as we, as part of this team should only ever encourage, defend and support all of our boys on the team, no matter what! Or if nothing positive to say, dont say anything!

We as parents and observers no doubt have our opinions, and have right to express them, challenge them, etc. It is prudent taking in to account derogatory comments, especially if based on inaccurate or partial information /metrics can and will cause grief on personal level, i am therefore always believer in face to face discussion of this nature, rather than social media.
Therefore, i will not post further here, however if you wish to continue this discussion, feel free to come and see me anytime, you know where i am.

Yes it's public knowledge. The game was televised.

I did not "single one player", I only challenge Critical_Lemon's assertion that "there is no better option in the squad" for CAM.

Nah this was a side that were allowed to play with freedom be brave and express themblah blah blah. Mind you if  capital 1 is the standard  alot have been playing week in week out then it would be the weakest side selected in years.

Changes need to be made.

Actually I'm already an adult, so not sure what you mean by that petty remark. Sounds like something you read somewhere that sounded cool.

All I have said is I agree with another poster that Marko is a better CDM than he is a CAM and there are other players in the squad more suited to the role.

I don't really understand why my opinion upsets you sensitive souls so.

Please don't assume everyone who goes to academies is rich. It's very far from the truth. For three years we paid more for our daughter to play college netball, train twice a week and be coached by a parent than we did for our son to be at Ole training five times a week with professional coaches. We aren't rich, we make what we consider the necessary sacrifices for him to try to achieve his goal of being a professional footballer and have a two hour round trip to every session.

@martyn

I admire your dedication, and it's good to hear that the Ole program is not too expensive. I also have to drive many hours for kids to attend regional level sports, NAGT, trials, training etc. Eveyone wants the best opportunities for there kids. No doubt

Reality is these days that after school sports and activities are expensive, and costs do add up especially if you have a big family and for alot of families some sports academy programs are a luxury. Especially if it means having to send your kids to boarding school in another city along way from where you live and work. (albeit alot of people do this, but alot can't afford to do this as well)

In context, My reply and comment was to someone else that posted about national youth teams saying. "I'd be very concerned if Olé and the Nix weren't providing almost the entire squad".

Those kids that can't attend Ole and Nix for what ever reason need to see there are other pathways to national selection, otherwise those kids are going to give up there goals and dreams. And potential will be lost.

There are alot of other good regional programs and coaches around the country that are putting in huge effort to help these kids attain there goals and dreams. And alot of parents around the country that drive there kids for many hours to get the best coaching that's available to them in the regions.

Just a plebs observation from the non parent politics world

From what ive seen at the tournament marko has plenty of natural athleticism and fight,  a good touch and generally makes good decisions. A foundation for a pretty damn good footballer! im sure ole will be  developing whatever else he requires. He looks like a player with a future to me.

come on everyone, let’s get back on track discussing the real issues for debate, it doesn’t need to degenerate into personal attacks does it? An opinion has been expressed which may have been viewed as personal to the player. I don’t see it that way, it was merely one persons view point on how the team might be better set up.

Looking ahead can we please not play 5 at the back and look to be more positive. There are parts last game where we played really well, but often when we do get the ball forward there is little or no support.
would like the coach to adopt a formation where we can overload higher up the park. Wing backs experience hasn’t worked and we play far too slow out the back.

Time to try a few new faces at the back,

Technically we can still qualify with a win over Canada as one of 4-best third-placed teams but that is dependent on other results obviously.

The four best third-placed teams advance, so no. Teams with three points have advanced in five of the six 24-team under-17 World Cups – though in most instances, there have also been teams with three points that missed out on GD, and New Zealand's is currently -4.

Well, if we're a chance to qualify still, they won't want to change too much (if the team that lost the last two games is the best XI of course).

Be nice to pull off a little miracle and qualify - good luck lads.

Result probably a bit flattering but gives us a chance for the last 16. We will likely be better than third-placed team in group E, and have a shot at being better than the third-placed team in group D (and possibly group C but that seems unlikely).

I didnt see the first 2 games so dont know what they were like in those games. Didnt think they were woeful in this game and there were certain things that I thought were very positive going forward. I thought the fact they tried to play their way out of trouble at the back is a sign that there is an attempt to at U17 level do the right things relative to the players development for the future. This age group for me is where the players are being encouraged to learn more than chase results. At U17 level especially for NZ results simply dont matter for a number of reasons. What we have to be doing is asking players to play in a manner which is beneficial to NZ when the players are older. Keeping possession under pressure and even in our own third is an important part of that process, players have to learn to operate under that type of pressure at this age so they can handle on the ball pressure when older even if they are making mistakes that cost the team, no point just clearing the ball at this level, that is a results fist need rather than a development first need.

From a playing style and tactical perspective I didnt see anything woeful and in terms of individuals didnt think they were anywhere near as bad as what i had read relative to the first 2 games (which  didnt see).  I do  wonder if peoples expectations of NZ U17 teams are out of sync with the reality of the situations and the needs going forward.

So far as I can tell, they need two of the following four things to happen in order to advance to the round of 16. The second and third appear the most likely.

  • Chile to beat South Korea by 3 goals or more/South Korea to beat Chile by 4 goals or more in group C.
  • The Netherlands to beat the United States by 1/that match to be a draw in group D.
  • Argentina to beat Tajikistan AND Spain to beat Cameroon/that match to be a draw in group E.
  • The Solomon Islands to beat Mexico by 8 goals or less/that match to be a draw in group F.
