Canty Utd Quiz night tonight. I wonder what the $68,000 question is?

Hopefully it's a $1000 entry ticket.

I personally would have loved to have seen Cory Vickers in the squad to be honest, guy got defender of the year and didn't make it. Especially since Reece got cut from the squad. Would have preferred him with an import slot rather than Juan, but that's just my personal opinion. The only reason Byron Heath isn't playing at the moment is injury, otherwise I'd back him to start. Thurston looked a lot better down the middle than out wide. First half was a bit typical but came out firing in the second half and was the best I've seen us this season by far. Strange decision to take George King off only to bring on Luke Tongue (Who hasn't impressed me this season either) However, I think the attack is still very narrow, even when counter attacking or switching out, leaves it much easier to defend, but that's just my two cents

Are you referring to Reece Cox or Rhys Williams??

Gone to Valour FC in the new Canadian Premier League. If you're looking for playing style, there are better people than me to give you some info! But he's physically strong, and knows how to find the net and pop up in the right places.

He took a bit of a jab at the league on the way out, saying that ever since he came to NZ he was waiting for the Canadian Premier League to form because he wanted to move to a place where quality of life and quality of football were both important.

from what i saw he was pretty much at the standard of our league, so i guess he was sort of taking a jab at himself as well

Mate you realise Stephen hasn't had a 'jab at the league' at all.  He has signed for Valour but he is also coming back to represent the Dragons. The guy is always promoting how good the Premiership is here. My Intel is he plans to play 6 months here and 6 months in Canada for the next few years. Can you blame him?  I'd play 12 months a year if I was able. He has even admitted in the Dragons Facebook page how much the franchise here has made him a better player. Let's just talk the facts guys not heresay

Bit rough on what Steve said to be fair. Did you hear the parts about rejecting teams from South Africa, Finland and Bundesliga 3 so that he could stay in NZ? He clearly loves the place and the league. I truly believe we'll see him again in the NZ prem. Also wou;dn't say that's a dig at the league or the country. It's professional football as opposed to semi-pro at best here, wanting to play at the highest level possible is a priority and all power to him. Have you guys been to Canada? It's damn lovely.

Yes all the best Stephen, not a bad gig if you are a footy player and can arrange to play all year round and miss winter as well.

Results see the Dragons move ahead of Hamilton Wanderers on the table, into fourth place with Wanderers playing in the late game against Waitakere and a win to Wanderers would see them moved back into fourth place.

A random guy turned up and filmed the game on the weekend. Posted on their Facebook.

Red card is at 45 mins and goal is at 59. Footage didn't quite get the goal keeper but it looks like he falls back into his box so think ref got it right with the red.

Dammit, would have watched that had I known. On that note, how many other clubs stream their games? Obviously Mainland, however I'm usually there so doesn't really have any benefit for me.

Did you notice all the comments from overseas gamblers who tuned in for the stream? I used to get all sorts of random messages when I was tweeting Coastal games from randoms thinking the men's game was actually the women's game and vice versa and Bet365 wasn't up to speed. Dickheads.

Dragons win 1-0 over Tasman. Very average game, poor from both sides. Dragons up 1-0 after about 15-20 in the 2nd half. Then Gerdsen takes off the best Dragons player Seb Schacht (hope I got his name correct), downhill from there, Dragons lucky to hang on.

Close - I think you will find his name is Seth Clark.....  Dragons let Tasman get too much confidence by parking the bus after the goal.

Thanks and agree with you. Apologies to Seth, thought he was the best player on the park. Seemed like the subs were all planned in advance (no coaching thought at all).

Seems very similar to Rojas - might need some supporters to get in behind him.  If he is local certainly a success as this is some sort of reward for what the clubs pay their fee to Canterbury United for.

I thought Gerdsen got his substitutions spot on today. Clark was influential in the first half but drifted out of the game in the second. The number 9 had been booked and then warned again by the ref so good decision to get him off. Agree though it was a very poor game though the Dragons were without Ogilvie, King and a couple of other regulars.

Saw on another thread (affiliation fees) that there is a proposed change of ownership for Canterbury United. Is there any information publicly available on this? If not, what’s the drill?

I'm not aware of any publicity about this (on purpose?), but all Christchurch clubs know of the Special GM to be held on 30 January 2019 to decide this. Summarised details are:

Remit 1 - "In line with the Mainland Football Game Delivery Model that has been developed and in circulation for the last 18 months the Board of Canterbury United and Mainland Football are proposing that Canterbury United is merged into Mainland Football. The Game Delivery Model clearly articulates that a High-Performance arm of Mainland football is set up to manage the operations and delivery of the Canterbury United teams playing in various competitions. The restructure aims to align and simplify the complexities that currently exist."

Remit 2 - "That a Canterbury United Membership card is developed that will provide benefits to the 10000 members/supporters. This is seen as an exciting opportunity to provide something back to our members in recognition of their ongoing support."

Membership card offers Free entry to all Dragons, Pride and Youth home games; Ultra-Sport offer of 10% off on-line purchases; Hanmer Springs agreed, offer will be confirmed in February;  Fuel offer with BP - “Club Car Offer” 20c/litre and Individual offer of at least 10c per litre; Shoe Clinic offer to be confirmed in February.

Increased Canterbury United fees:

2019 Fees - Senior $17.00 (Ages 19+), Youth $12.00 (Ages 13-18), Junior $7.00 (Ages 12 and Under).

2020 Fees - Senior $20.00 (Ages 19+), Youth $15.00 (Ages 13-18), Junior $10.00 (Ages 12 and Under).

Contact your club for more details.

Tasman United isn’t part of Mainland Football, but Nelson/Marlborough players are. I assume they don’t  pay the Canterbury United levy. But also assume they don’t pay a levy towards  Tasman United either, correct?

So to a mainland player in Nelson, are Mainland promising a high performance pathway oriented towards CU?

nelson players pay a levy to Mainland football every year, Mainland do not specifically use it for Canterbury dragons but come on. It is a reasonable bone of contention.

Nelson/Marlborough etc are part on the Mainland Football region. Their players will pay the Mainland Football levy. But they are NOT charged the Canterbury United levy/membership fee. CU fee only applies to Christchurch clubs.

Both Auckland and Eastern Suburbs dominating the league  , should see them in the finals.

Good to see both teams full of Nz youth players, most of whom have came through a non Nz football processed coaching set up (Ole and Suburbs)

Canty getting punished off the better teams after riding their luck the past few games with the gung ho approach

Canty still good for 4th

Yes hard to see Canterbury missing out on the top four with six games to go. Currently in third with 21 points with Team Wellington on fourth on 20 with two games in hand, they face Tasman tomorrow, with their catch up game against Wellington Phoenix on Waitangi Day.

With Hamilton Wanderers losing again today, to Southern United 3 - 1 that leaves Wanderers on 16 points in fifth place.Hawkes Bay could move into fifth place if they toppled Auckland City in the game on Sky tomorrow.

Poppycock I'm afraid.

According to Soccerway, players with a NZ flag in the last Handy round (Jan 12-13th) in the various starting elevens.

Eastern Sub 11

Team Welly 10

Weenix 9 (Kumsuz & Stensess listed as Aussies)

Tasman 7

Waitak 7

Hawkes Bay 7

Hamilton 6

Cant United 6

Southern 4

ACFC 4

Full team lineups not yet available on Soccerway for this weekend's round.

Sure some of the players that have NZ flags - were never developed as young footballers in NZ, eg Henry Cameron at TW.

But a myth to say ACFC have more young Kiwis starting than most Handy clubs.

you obviously never read what was written.

Over the course of the season they have more Nz eligible players and have thrown in youth products which is a big change for Acfc than using foreign players so much

On one hand, he's right, Kiwis are playing more minutes (though it's worth nothing that Papua New Guinea's David Browne, Spain's Albert Riera, and Mexico's Fabrizio Tavano, three players who figure to be starters in City's best XI, have all missed big chunks of time, which is probably the biggest contributing factor here).

2018-19: 53% (Howieson, Vale, Morgan, Drake, Hudson-Wihongi, Rogers in 11 most-used | Yousif Ali in 14 most-used)

2017-18: 40% (McCowatt, Howieson, Hudson-Wihongi, Morgan | de Vries)

2016-17: 30% (de Vries, Rogers | Lewis, Drake)

2015-16: 40% (de Vries, Hudson-Wihongi, Lewis, Edge | den Heijer)

2014-15: 34% (Williams, Vicelich, de Vries, Burfoot, Payne)

In 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, squad composition rules meant you could get away with 27% Kiwi minutes at a minimum (though sometimes those went to foreigners who have been here long enough to get citizenship, as City have done with Darren White, Fabrizio Tavano, Albert Riera, all not counted here)

In 2018-19, Kiwis had to play 36% of minutes at a minimum.

On the other hand, City's NYL > NL progression remains the worst of any team.

The only player who could conceivably be called a youth product is Maro Bonsu-Maro, who has played 20 minutes (and scored one winning goal). He was last eligible for the NYL in 2016.

None of last year's NYL squad have featured this year (though Cam Brown is the third-string keeper, as he has been for a while).

None of 2017's or 2016's have either, bar Bonsu-Maro.

Going back to 2015 you could claim Reid Drake as moving up, but he had played 900 NL minutes for Waikato/WaiBop before captaining City's NYL team that year.

This doesn't count the likes of Hudson-Wihongi/Lewis/The Ole kids last year who all came straight into the first team setup.

On the other hand, City's NYL > NL progression remains the worst of any team.

While its not "progression" do you know how many of the ACFC youth players have gone on to play NL or higher with other clubs?
