From this weeks Flying Kiwis -

"Meanwhile if you’ve ever wondered about Bill Tuiloma’s time with managerial hipster icon Marcelo Bielsa at Olympique Marseille then this interview with So Foot from France is a great one for you. Bielsa is obviously doing amazing things with Leeds United in the English Championship this season.

Bill Tuiloma : « Portland, c'est un peu l'OM de la MLS » https://www.sofoot.com/bill-tuiloma-portland-c-est-un-peu-l-om-de-la-mls-462462.html …

“When he called me in the first team, I remember already being very happy because it was my reward for two years of work, but my first appearance in Ligue 1 was an unforgettable moment. There were a few minutes left, Lemina got a red and Bielsa calls me over. I'm not sure if it's me he’s talking to, so the coach turns around, shouts my name again and everything was racing. When you take off that tracksuit and enter the field, it's beautiful. There, you feel an incredible pride for your family and your country. Somehow it's a historic match. Bielsa is a unique manager, he’s the one who has impressed me the most in my career. With Bielsa, from the moment you work, regardless of your level or your age, you have your chance. He’s a coach who made me stronger and gave me a lot of confidence.”

And some more on his 2018 season…

“I started well, then I got hurt and it was hard to come back. But I didn’t drop my head and continued to work hard in training for the team while waiting for my chance. It's great to have played my first playoff game at home, with a win against Seattle and in an incredible atmosphere. I enjoyed it... The careers of football players are not always straight-forward, and it’s the same in my case. Since the beginning of my career, nothing has been easy, I’ve had to fight to prove that I deserve my place. I think that in football, only one thing counts, and that’s the work you put in.”

1st leg in Portland 1.30pm Monday NZT.

Tuiloma unlikely to start. Though Ridgewell is on a yellow, so if he gets another he’ll miss the 2nd leg.

0-0 at HT. Timbers have hit the post early on.

Tuiloma (number 25) has been on since 19 min mark. Mabiala off injured.

Timbers goal disallowed, through VAR. Offside.

Tuiloma looks increasingly accomplished at this level. Pass intercept preceded free kick that lead to non goal.

Could be valuable CB/DM for the AWs in this next cycle, when they finally get to play again.

Sporting KC will be favourites in Kansas for 2nd leg on Friday.

Must be a good chance BT will start the 2nd game.

In Eastern Conference, Atlanta flogged NY Red Bulls 3-0 in their 1st leg in Georgia.

"I thought Bill Tulioma was absolutely an animal this game. Having to be subbed on in the first half in the first leg of a western conference final is a tough task for anybody, let alone a center back. I thought he took his chance and put in WORK defensively, and he had a great chance in the second half to score."

Plays the full game as Timbers win a nail-biting match 3-2 to reach the final of the MLS , the winning goal coming in the 9th minute of injury time.

Tuiloma partly at fault for the first goal and I'm hearing from Twitter that he made a few more mistakes too, but looked very intelligent and solid from what I saw.

Timbers now play Atlanta United on December 9 NZT to see who lifts the 2018 MLS Cup. Good chance Bill will appear again!

Awesome stuff. Travelling so bugger I missed it.

Atlanta will be very hard to beat. Stand out team this season. However Timbers have managed a few noteworthy away wins in the playoffs.

Quality strike for Timbers first goal.

BT number 25 in white.

I'd say that Tuiloma more at fault (though took a small deflection from a SKC player just before he his airswing) for SKC's 2nd goal, than their first.

Lets hope Timbers can pull it off in the final.

Unfortunately for Tuiloma, Mabiala is back from injury so BT is pushed to the bench.

Atlanta warm favourites.

Incredible scenes, huge occasion for Bill. I'd estimate 80,000 people, the atmosphere rivals even Champions League finals. Would defintely recommend a stream if you guys can find one

Yes offical crowd a very impressive 73,000 as Atlanta win 2-0!

Tuiloma not required from the bench.

Still a bit of a break out season, and hopefully in 2019 he can become a regular starter for Portland.

Will be interesting to see where he plays for the All Whites but you would like to think he will come in as the starting LCB.

Reid, Smith, Boxall, maybe Themi are better than Tuiloma for now so if Schmid keeps using four at the back then Tuiloma will have a challenge on his hands

Would think Tuiloma would be our starting DM atm, he is better than Musa/Rufer

Smith and Themi aren't young and Reid is constantly injured.

And with 2022 in mind, I'd be giving Tuiloma as many opportunities as possible. Has generally looked very good for the Timbers

Better out and out CB's perhaps, but you can see the benefit in having a CB that has a better pass, a bit of creativity and is comfortable with ball at feet with Kopa the Nix. Though you're right it's harder to justify in a back four.

The Timbers exercised the 2019 contract options on goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh, defenders Modou Jadama and Bill Tuiloma, and forwards Jeremy Ebobisse and Foster Langsdorf.

Liam Ridgewell has left Portland Timbers which should increase Bill's chances of more playing time (in the absence of further signings of course).

Plays second half in a 4-0 win over Costa Rican champs Saprissa. Been in Costa Rica for a while with his team for a preseason camp I'd assume, seems to be buildign a great relationship with Claude Dielna - French centreback who the club just brought in. Big fuss over the whole French Connection at the back - Mabiala and Dielna being French, Tuiloma having played there and being fluent.

That will be interesting, thought Hudson would have got sacked after Colorado's finishing position last season but still there I see.

Timbers were down to 10 men after 70 mins when CB Mabiala got a 2nd yellow, though by then were already 3-0 down.

If Tuiloma played well, plus Mabiala being suspended he's likely to get another start verus Galaxy, 4th April. Actually few weeks between MLS games for both Minnesota & Portland. So had that tourney in Malaysia gone ahead, Tuiloma & M Boxall might have been there with the AWs. Colorado on other hand do play this weekend.

Was first MLS home game for Cincinnati, and also their first win. Crowd 32,000.
