no surprises there really. was one of the worst decisions you could possibly make in sacking the coach especially that close to the end! blew up in their faces considering the thinking of doing what they did would gain them promotion. a decision like that clearly shows that those around the club or involved in the choice have learned nothing over the past 5 or 6 years or no little. too many ego's who do not know a hell of a lot and an even bigger one running their juniors. fun times ahead

Give him a chance to prove his worth as a coach and FDO - maybe a year with the 1st team and club they'll all be better for it.

In meantime Selwyn pretty happy to stay where they are and avoid away games at the swamp for at least another season.

Christchurch United thanks Fernando Lambert for invaluable contributions.

The Christchurch United board and staff have expressed their gratitude for Fernando Lambert’s contribution in the development of the club.

After two seasons as First Team coach at Christchurch United, the club and Fernando have agreed to part ways as the coach is seeking new opportunities in New Zealand.

Fernando arrived in New Zealand from Sydney after a successful stint at Manly United.

Christchurch United president Slava Meyn had been impressed by Fernando and his teams while attending the Sydney tournaments and recruited the Brazilian to come across the Tasman.

Academy director Colin Williamson said that Fernando had brought a high level of professionalism to the club and a unique mix of Brazilian and Australian flair to his teams. “We all enjoyed working with Fernando and we all wish him all the best for the future.”

Fernando also thanked the staff, managers, parents and players of the club for their support over the past two seasons.

"During those months, we have grown as a club and achieved so much in a short period of time,” said Fernando in his farewell Facebook post. "It is time now to say goodbye and look for another challenge in New Zealand or overseas. It is hard to leave behind so many friends but I am sure that those friendships will last forever.

"Good luck to all players and coaches for the coming years and I am looking forward of seeing some of you representing New Zealand Football in the future."

Canterbury football royalty Danny Halligan returns to Christchurch United

Christchurch United legend and former All Whites midfielder Danny Halligan has signed as the new first-team coach to help his former club return to the top of Canterbury football.

Halligan has just completed five successful seasons coaching Ferrymead Bays, competing among the top teams in the Mainland Premier League and winning the title in 2017, as well as the English Cup in 2016.

“I was very happy at Bays and not looking for a change at all, so when Christchurch United approached me I was initially not that interested,” says the 53-time New Zealand international.

“But once I took a closer look at the intentions and the ambitions of the club, I got really excited by the challenge. And of course, I’ve also got a soft spot for Christchurch United with my history at the club,” says Halligan who had a huge impact on the club as a player and coach from 1987 to 1998.

Halligan initially joined the star-studded, all-conquering Christchurch United team in 1987 to win three National League titles and two Chatham Cups, before embarking on a professional career with Brisbane United in the Australian League.

He returned to Christchurch United in 1993 and unexpectedly found himself in his first coaching role, while still a key player, at a tender age of 28 when legendary coach Terry Conley retired. The first two players he recruited were two school boys called Ryan Nelsen and Ben Sigmund.

When Canterbury United entered the new National League in 2002, Halligan was appointed as player-coach and lost the final against Auckland City on penalties in 2006, the closest the franchise has ever come to winning that.

After the club’s glory years of the 1980s and 1990s, Christchurch United has been languishing in the second tier of Mainland Football and Halligan admits his knowledge of the Championship and his squad is limited.

“I’ve got a lot of work to do and it will be a big challenge, but it is the challenge that excites me about this role,” says the 53-year-old coach.

Christchurch United has been rebuilding over the past few years and its Academy programme has delivered great results at youth level, but president Slava Meyn hopes that Halligan will be the missing piece in the puzzle to take the first team back into the Mainland Premier League.

“We feel honoured that Danny Halligan has agreed to help his old club get back to where we belong. Getting a coach with his experience and pedigree shows that Christchurch United is serious about its ambitions to again be the leading football brand in the region,” says Meyn.

I was thinking it was a bad move cause I dont think Danny will attract that many players but then when you hear how big his budget is...... Surely Chch must finally get promoted throwing that sort of money. Good on them

Must admit I thought something similar when I read this bit "But once I took a closer look at the intentions and the ambitions of the club, I got really excited by the challenge." Not that I have any evidence of a massive budget for players, just going on past behaviour :)

Christchurch United FC show intent with their first Summer signings

The recent appointment of Danny Halligan has ignited instant movement towards the club in the form of three high profile player signings.

Mainland Premier League record scorer Michael White will spearhead the Christchurch United attack in the 2019 season, with Mark Peers complementing the goal scoring threat and experienced defender Sam Ford ensuring solid foundations.

Michael White has an impressive footballing pedigree which includes his 114 MPL goals in addition to his A-League experience for NZ Knights and National League appearances. White has proved a key player for Nelson, Cashmere Technical, & Ferrymead Bays within the MPL and has also lifted the Chatham Cup with Miramar in 2010.

Mark Peers comes with a Liverpool Youth Player background and has proved one of the most dangerous forwards in the MPL over the past 4 seasons, winning the title in 2017 and representing Canterbury Dragons. Signing for Christchurch United after being awarded the Ferrymead Bays Player’s Player of the Year 2018, Peers is a headline early addition to the squad.

Sam Ford has been a mainstay of the Ferrymead Bays defence over the past several seasons since his arrival from Somerset. His dominant displays and ball-playing ability helped Bays to lift the 2017 MPL title and was voted Club Player of the Year in the same season.

Will be interesting to see how these players adapt to CCL. In previous seasons none of Chch Utd's 'high profile' signings from MPL have made any impact on the league

Good luck to them for their season ahead

All this $ for a 2nd division league with no prize money, in the world renowned footballing hotbed of Christchurch, with no pyramid to progress to a national league.

Slava’s money would be much better spent on the great job he’s done of developing kids sporting facilities than paying these 2nd rate mercenaries.

The Rams have forgotten their history and how they virtually went bust.

I dont think it will work this year with Danny and the mercenaries and I think Halswell will go up and Uni 2nd but I do absolutely love and appreciate anyone who puts money into our small sharkty leagues haha

Christchurch United net another hattrick with a trio of new signings

Following on from yesterday’s announcement of the club’s first signings since Halligan took over the Christchurch United reins, three more players have committed to the Yaldhurst-based outfit: Shawn O’Brien, Jordan Halligan, & Jonny Inwood.

Left footed Shawn O’Brien is one of the most decorated players within the city, winning 4 MPL titles, the MPL Goldon Boot in 2013, and the MPL Player of the Year in 2014, yet still only 24 years old. O’Brien will be a valuable asset to the club through his versatility of scoring goals, providing creativity, and being able to cover defensive roles.

Jordan Halligan, again young in age at 23 years old, has already clocked-up over 150 MPL appearances, seeing the holding midfielder lift 3 MPL titles and a Chatham Cup winners medal. Halligan junior was voted the MPL Player of the Year in 2016.

Adding some much needed tenacity for the CCL, midfielder Jonny Inwood is another key signing for the club who can also play in a variety of positions when required. Inwood spent last season with Cashmere Technical and had a previous spell with Universities.

Danny halligan going back to his old club. Really this is nothing more than a club with the same name. Over the last 5 years they have thrown silly money at players trying to get back into the top league. In that same period a new club formed just down the road have invested in youth  and senior coaching whilst adding a couple of experienced players who have bought into the culture the club wanted to grow. This has resulted in the club joining the big boys and have been a joy to watch playing exciting football. I know which club gets my vote

As far as I know from a few years ago clubs just entered the league as no promotion is required. Differs from other divisions

SAS home pitch is a new sand based one at the revamped St Albans Park complete with new building for changing rooms etc.

It's good to see a couple of the SAS junior mini league player from years past coming back and playing seniors for the club.

Do they need to get a 1st team coach & manager for 2019 season didn't seem to have anyone 2018 season.

Training may help them.
