What can we do to make the people of wellington more keen on being a member. we have a good solid base of 4-5k   why cant we get them all to be members?

I would love a membership and buy the outside new zealand one but i have a membership for Gamba Osaka here too.

Going by the FFT forum it looks like there will be no FTA option for HAL this season. Not that it affects the NZ market but its kind of worrying that it just doesn't rate.

The ABC are set to show Saturday night football on their main channel in a TV rights coup for football in Australia, says the Daily Telegraph.

Fox Sports and the national broadcaster are in talks to finalise a deal for the 5.15 game to be shown live on the ABC's main channel every Saturday night for the first time in A-League history.

Recent free to air A-League TV deals have only seen 10 and SBS broadcast matches on their subsidiary channels to a limited audience, but W-League games on the ABC regularly attracted higher viewing figures than A-League games on Fox Sports.

And hopes are high the move to ABC primetime could help revitalise the competition this year.

It comes as A-League owners and the FFA finalise the deal to formally separate.

A completed deal was supposed to have been signed off by August 1 but the legal details are still being pored over before the handover can be done.

However Paul Lederer – Western Sydney Wanderers owner and chairman of the Australian Professional Football Clubs Association taking over the A-League – today insisted the deal would be done before the season starts, despite concerns state member federations were blocking the move

"The FFA, the PFA, the states and us have all agreed," he said at the launch of the new WSW HQ in Blacktown. "There is no disagreement. It's a matter of putting it down on paper.

"There's been lots of discussions and lots of different views – but at the moment, no issues with the state federations. They've got on board and things are good.

"It's time. It's very important. The FFA have done a great job over the years but it's time for the separation. It's time for us to let us run our own game or our own race."

Lederer also promised fans would see the launch of a high profile marketing campaign to further help put the A-League back on the map.

"The marketing campaign will be very extensive," he promised. "More than the FFA. And the financial commitment to the game from the clubs will be significantly more.

"Because all of a sudden the owners can see the light at the end of the tunnel. They're going to say, 'Right, we're going to invest. It's our game, it's our thing.'

"It's different psychologically and in reality."

Little more than a year ago, he was refereeing Harry Kane, Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi at the World Cup. Now Alireza Faghani is heading for the A-League.

One of the world’s best-known referees, the Iranian official has been appointed as the A-League’s fourth full-time ref after making the decision to move his family here to give his children more opportunities.

Faghani refereed Australia’s win in the 2015 Asian Cup final, the first leg of the Wanderers’ Champions League triumph in 2014 and the gold medal match at the Rio Olympics’ men’s football.

He also officiated in the 1-0 win over Iraq at ANZ Stadium that saw Australia qualify for the 2014 World Cup — on the same night that Iran also qualified, much to his delight.

His appointment is a huge coup for a competition where refereeing standards have come under extensive scrutiny, particularly with the departure last season of the best referee, Jarred Gillett, and his standing is such that competition chiefs effectively created an extra full-time position to accommodate him.

Faghani revealed that he had first applied to move here before last year’s World Cup, after talking the move over with friends including former A-League referee Strebe Delovski and ex-NSL ref Eddie Lennie.

“I had (achieved) my dreams during this year, and at the World Cup (in Russia),” Faghani told The Daily Telegraph.

“My dream had been the final but I did the third v fourth game. I achieved my dreams, and I had always loved Australia and Australians.

“I have many friends who are living here in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. Always they talk to me, why don't you move here, you can make a better life for your family and your children. I thought about it, and last year before the World Cup I decided to apply for a visa.

“I was supposed to come straight after the World Cup but I was busy with my university studies (a PhD in Physical Education). Two months ago I finished it, and so we have come here in the hope of making a better life for my family.

“It's my pleasure to be here, working in one of the AFC's top leagues. Regarding the organisation, using the VAR etc, the A-League is one of the top competitions.

“In the A-League, like in Japan and Korea, they have discipline, the football is clean, you don't need to talk too much, just let them play football.”

Faghani said he will referee in the same style here as he has in international tournaments, such as keeping a cool head in the volatile clash between Argentina and France at the World Cup last year.

“We have to referee consistently no matter who is playing,” he said. “It depends how the teams are playing, the tactical approach, and how you prepare yourself for the game.”

It remains to be seen whether his international commitments will continue, though he has told the Iranian football authorities that he would like to continue as one of their representatives in the Champions League and in major tournaments.

Hi Phoenix fans,

My name is Sam and I am currently studying at AUT, undertaking a management assignment looking into the concept of a new A-League team based in Auckland. I was hoping to get some insight as to what fans would like to see in a new club based in NZ and what factors would influence a potential alliance switch?

Any and all replies are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It's 20 years since the first ever Kingz game next week, you might want to start by looking into what caused the failure of the previous incarnations in Auckland.

Fantastic surname Bobby.

Quick thoughts, more about how a team could be successful than really an allegiance switch -

A big name NZ signing, eg Winston Reid, Chris Wood, Ryan Thomas - that's presuming that an Auckland team is a min 3 years away, so first two esp will be at tail end of their careers, making a move to NZ more likely.

Home games all at Eden Park, apart from maybe 1-2 in Hamilton/Tauranga.

Similar model to how Nix seem to be heading with a core of young, promising NZ players.

Efforts to tap into Auckland's multi cultural popn/immigrant communities, like signing a quality player from China/Korea/Fiji.

A dedicated fan group like YF (not easy to mimic).

And related, make it a fun day out. Drums, smoke, noise etc. Offer free entry (or free transport from Waiheke Island) to those football mad Argentinians who live over there!

Organising buses, or other easy transport options, from football clubs based South, West and North Shore to Eden Park.

Win more than lose.

A pantomime villain to hate in Wellington, and/or vice versa, ie create a genuine NZ derby rivalry. Could sign Mark Rudan as coach for a start.

There is also an “A League Expansion” thread somewhere, which I’d suggest is a better place to put up your Post. Good luck with the assignment hopefully some of the Auckland football community read it!

Part of a 442 article today...

https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/fixtures-set-to-change-for-tv-deal-531473

Now Football Federation Australia has confirmed it will revisit the fixture list to vary things up for the timeslot if the TV deal goes ahead to give Aussie teams a bigger showcase.

A final decision has yet to be made, but it could see 7.30pm games brought forward, while the New Zealand- based Phoenix games may move from 5.15 Sydney-time time to an earlier 3pm Sydney time slot.

They are changing kick off times, not changing the draw. So we are both right. They must be rather desperate if they are gonna push some of Fox's big games into a free to air slot.

Ratings = Home side + away side + casuals...

If Nix play in 9 games or a third of matches broadcast ... then either the away side side or home side views are lost in Australia...

Its the primary reason the Nix's rate so low in Australia ...

Its in no ones interest for ratings to be down ....

This is not anti Nix ....

The counter is Sky in NZ should more than up make the difference and contribute funds for this ratings... I don't know Sky's rating and from what I have read what they have paid in the past as a % of broadcast revenue is quite low ...

Don't the Nix get better ratings in Australia than CCM? Otherwise it makes sense to spread the teams around the FTA slots.

Yep. Pretty sure it was demonstrated last season that Phoenix games don't rate lower than a number of AU clubs in Australian markets, including the Mariners.

Still. Middy has never let facts get in the way of an agenda.

DEVELOP or DESTROY HAL     Link to have your say

Midfielder    https://forum.insidesport.com

Three times key stakeholders in Australian Football have applied a scorched earth policy and destroyed what was there and set up a new.

In 1955 in the Sydney competition,
The NSL in the 70’s
Hal in the 00’s

Frank Lowy was a key player in each revolution, all started with a bang and ended badly. Well Hal has not ended but declining.

It leaves two questions, do we want to destroy Hal and start again ? or Do we develop and change Hal ?

Personally for me I think the various fractions if Hal fell over would have trouble putting in place a commonly agreed format… So for me I would prefer to develop and change Hal for whats needed and with the new governance model, clubs now in charge of Hal, a second division forming, new CEO of FFA seemly coming from Football.... Change is happening the speed can be argued but you can't argue change is not happening.

Open question , scorched earth and destroy Hal… or Develop and change Hal
