I'd suggest our identity is based on an historic World Cup qualifying achievement (that included a couple of World records), the unifying effect of a team that helped the NZ sporting public recover from the horrific experience of the 81 Springbok Tour, a first World Cup appearance and Oceania's first ever goals there, a legacy of some iconic and legendary players (chief amongst them Rufer and Sumner), and subsequent generations of players aspiring to emulate them all the way through to another historic Word Cup tilt in 2010 (where, from memory, no one was too bothered with them being the All Whites).
