Happy to stand corrected if someone can provide a source that says so, but as far as I'm aware, the FIFA ASEAN Cup carries no extra weight with regard to FIFA rankings compared to friendlies.

With all due respect to whoever at NZF is emailing Coochie, this isn't a tournament the All Whites should be wanting to be a part of.

Maybe it's just other ASEAN comps like the ASEAN Championship currently being played outside a FIFA window, carried no Ranking points??
So yes this official FIFA comp is better than anything the ASEAN nations have had before.

Someone much smarter than me (Carlind?) might be able to roughly calculate what would happen to the AWs rankings if they won the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Pointless exercise though yes it would be, because we ain't gonna be there

Agree the standard of the teams ain't great. But hey World no 138 India are visiting NZ in November and I don't see any football journos saying we shouldn't be having those games - which yes admittedly are rare non OFC matches in Aotearoa.

And after the excitement of watching Eli score those goals, and the AWs twice leading at a WC, watching them play Poland or Norway B at 5am NZT is not really going to cut it either going forward

https://vietnamnet.vn/en/vietnam-to-face-thailand-in-fifa-asean-cup-2026-group-stage-2540352.html

The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is the first regional international football tournament to be organized and managed directly by FIFA. It is separate from the traditional ASEAN Championship (ASEAN Cup) and will be played during the official FIFA international window from September 24 to October 3, 2026.

Holding the tournament during FIFA Days allows participating nations to call up their strongest available squads, including players based overseas.
Match results will also count toward the FIFA Men's World Ranking under the weighting applied to official FIFA international fixtures.

Another notable feature of the inaugural tournament is its expanded scope beyond the 11 member associations of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). In addition to Southeast Asian teams, FIFA has invited Pakistan and Hong Kong (China) to participate, increasing the tournament's competitiveness while providing additional international experience for teams across the region.

AI Overview
Yes, the FIFA ASEAN Cup carries a higher importance multiplier for FIFA world ranking points than a standard international friendly. Official tournament matches under FIFA's organization feature an increased weighting (often cited at a 10x multiplier equivalent or higher status) compared to routine international friendlies

Also curious which tournament Andrew would like the All Whites to be part of?

Is the strategy to gain a one off ticket to ride and hopefully gain a better ranking or is it more long term?

I understand the need to get a better world ranking but I just don't think a short term approach works. Will make a lot of people happy though :)

The premise of this question is faulty – it's not about playing more games. The All Whites have played in 21 of the 22 windows since the Covid-19 pandemic, missing one in September 2023 due to a clash with Olympic qualifying. That will become 22 out of 23 this September, against stronger opposition than is present at the ASEAN Cup.

Will those friendlies in Sept/Oct carry the same FIFA ranking weightings, as potential wins at the FIFA ASEAN Cup though?

Yes – since my last post I have found the regulations for the FIFA ASEAN Cup, which states they are the equivalent of friendlies in regulation 1.3: “The matches will be allocated FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking points in line with their status as a series of international friendlies taking place during an official International Match Calendar window”.

It would be great to get invited to the 2028 Copa America or the 2029 Gold Cup, beyond those (and those are fanciful from where I sit) there's no tournament that really offers the All Whites anything.

Just to address a couple of points here...

Re: a lack of criticism of playing lowly India in November ... while it's not great, it's also down to the reality of who it's realistic to get to New Zealand. Even then, there's half a dozen east Asian nations everyone would still prefer, but these have been locked in for quite some time, and when the govt is helping out with the bill ... plus an opponent where the AWs should get to strut their stuff in front of home fans is more palatable now, at the very start of a new World Cup cycle, than once they're in the thick of it.

And re: "watching them play Poland or Norway B at 5am NZT is not really going to cut it either going forward" ...
alas friendlies like those are what it's going to be. That's New Zealand's lot and there's not a lot that can be done about it. Believe it's two or three games v top 60 opposition on the cards in September-October (the view seems to be that fititng in four on top of travel is a silly schedule) and even if it's not top XIs, that will be better than watching them play SE Asian minnows.

Cheers AV.

Looks like the 2027 Gold Cup is unfortunately now staying at only 16 teams with Saudi an invitee

If as rumoured the Gold Cup did expand to 24 teams in 2029, and most of the other Confeds are busy with some sort of competitive game scheduling that June (12 mths pre the WC), then the AWs are at least a chance of an invite. We have a recent history of turning up in Nth America, being competitive but mostly yes losing. That might be a perfect fit for the organisers.

We would though jbring very limited commercial value or travelling fans.

AFC announced plans last Decemer to launch a Nations League, but it's been silence since. And the FIFA news this week could further delay any new development there.

CAF is having it's AFCON go from biennial to 4 yearly, with a Nations League divisional schedule to fill that gap. So will join CONCACAF & UEFA with Nations Leagues.

Whaaa?

We should be grateful to be playing Norway B or Poland at 5am. Those are great games. Outside those other tournaments this is almost best case scenario. The Finland and Greece games laid bare our tactical naïveté (thanks autocorrect! ). We need to understand how to play against these teams and to react before it’s too late. That was a weakness in the World Cup.

A few of the guys in that Norway team we played were their impact subs in the World Cup knockout. That’s definitely at the higher end of where we can be competitive.

That Chile performance papered over cracks that were not completely addressed before the World Cup.

Great Points AV and Martinb

Let's me just add to it....

1. Gold Cup and Copa America would be awesome but not a long term approach to improving the AW.

2. One has to absolutely complement the NZF for arranging quality opponents for 21 of the 22 Windows.

Where I differ with you (or maybe not) is that these two tournaments offer the AW anything. And yes maybe from a points point of view that might be true. I really think there is too much of a hyper focus on the AW 1st eleven which is not healthy for the squad. Looking back, most fans realise that some players were getting picked for their past performances. That their current form did not help the AW but the coach felt he had not choice but to field them because there was nobody else. There was clearly a ceiling.

I believe going forward there has to be more focus on the AW majority under 23 B squad. Those players just on the outside who need international minutes to see if they can make it or not. This is where I believe smaller unfanccied tournaments like ASEAN or COSAFA Cup can help the AW in the long term.

Maybe looking at the very short term that's the squad that should play India. It's not about winning or losing but a process to building a bigger, stronger AW squad. Yes the losing will annoy fans but they will come to understand that it's a 4 year cycle.

ok, so getting better opposition is fair, but by getting better opposition do we lose the ability to bring them to NZ?

Well agruably the 2 windows later this year might be the perfect balance, if we are going to be restricted to friendlies only for the next 3 odd years.

Reading AV's post above sounds like 2-3 tough games somewhere overseas in the expanded Sept-Oct window, and then for the Nov window hosting minnows India for 2 games in NZ. One of those at sparkling new Te Kaha to help generate some excitement.

Peru and Australia are rumoured to be playing in Japan (Kirin Cup) in Sept-Oct.
Could we be invited as the 4th team? A likely very handy time slot to watch the AWs in.
The Blue Samurai are down to play 4 games in that window.
https://www.chosun.com/english/sports-en/2026/07/22/3HQFEDOHUBE7RBAXEWPRZNYTFM/

However the Socceroos are playing Brazil (25th & 29th Sept) in Queensland, so that article might have a few flaws. There are strong diplomatic/trade ties between Japan & Peru though, so wouldn't surprise at all if they were involved.  They are frequent visitors to Nippon, and only Japan have won the Kirin Cup more than them.

Fingers crossed we get an invite.

I saw some cursory reporting about his following in India and reporting that he was the first player of Indian descent and/or the first of Sikh heritage too.

But I don’t have any idea how large his profile is there now he’s not a Bayern player. But Indian fans that I’ve known can be proper obsessive fans in their dedication to their sports’ heroes!

Edit: cursory google clears up that it’s not the first in the WC. There were players from the Netherlands and France who achieved that.

But apparently, again, subject to further scrutiny was the first player of Indian heritage in the Bundesliga.

India host Brazil in October, then travel to NZ in November.

Hopefully they organise the Brazil match, better than the chaotic farce last year of Messi in India.

Absolute quality here mate. My preference would be locally based (including Oz based) players. Just think the coach should leave overseas based players alone to focus on making their 1st teams and cement their place.

A young player like Luka Vicelich should be selected and given that 10 minutes at the end for a little taste. Yes, I know maybe it's a little too early.

That’s fantastic.

Kirin great beer as well.

Not sure if they are still doing it but a few years ago I did the Kirin factory tour. It’s free and at the end everyone gets coupons for two drinks to be consumed within half an hour.

Of course if you go with a non drinker it’s even better.

Would never work in NZ.

Outstanding fixtures. And to be honest, they put the India fixtures in a better light too. A balance of higher-ranked and lower-ranked teams following the world cup is ideal.

Well done NZF. Had a hunch we might get an invite.

Only small negative is it will just be two games in this new expanded combined Sept-Oct window, when we could play up to 4 games.
Upside is the players get more time to rest after flying in long haul, from Europe/States. Potentially more training sessions than a typical condensed window.

If we are at close to full strength we will be a solid chance to beat Panama.

New ALM season starts weekend October 17-18th, so not too much disruption for Nix and AFC if they have some players called up, with the 2nd AWs match October 5th. Japan also not such a long flight from NZ.

New Zealand Football has announced the All Whites will travel to Japan this October to take part in the Kirin Cup 2026.

New Zealand will join Ecuador (FIFA rank 25), hosts Japan (FIFA rank 17), and Panama (FIFA rank 44) for the tournament held in Yokohama and Tokyo.

On Thursday 1 October, the All Whites will face Panama (Match 1) at Yokohama International Stadium, followed by Japan playing Ecuador (Match 2) at the same venue.

On Monday 5 October, at Tokyo’s National Stadium, the winner of Match 1 will face the winner of Match 2 for the tournament crown, while the two losing sides will meet in the third-place play-off.

Kick-off times for the tournament will be confirmed in due course.

All four teams involved in the Kirin Cup 2026 participated in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Awesome set of fixtures and lucky to have drawn Panama which will be a new excited team for us to go uo against (I recall we didnt fare too well against Ecuador recently).

Its a pity with the extended window they couldn't have made this a full round robin tournament.

Has NZF ruled out any other friendlies before the Kirin cup? I'd imagine we would ideally play a 'warmup' game around Sep 28.

Window does start 21st Sept.

Ecuador enroute to Japan are dropping into Seoul for a friendly 25th Sept, against Sth Korea. Sth Koreans then play Uruguay 29th Sept.

Looks like pre the Kirin Cup tourney, Japan are hosting Uruguay 24th Sept and then Venezuela 28th Sept.

Limited options with most other countries in our part of the world occupied already.

FIFA ASEAN Cup in that window, plus Asian Games (in Japan) that likes of China & Nth Korea are playing football in. Though looks like the later is mostly an U23 tourney like the Olympics. So yeah a game in China could maybe squeezed in??

But it's been a big year for AWs players with the WC and all the prep prior. You can see why Baze & co would be happy with just the 4 more games this year. With you suspect a large amount of rotation between the Sept-Oct window and November (ALM heavy selection?).

Awesome!

Difficult games. Should Baze take the WC squad or change it up? It's a great start to the 4 year cycle. Anybody over 28yo should not be selected in my humble opinion. Just no values in it.

Correction: Should Baze have any part to play here? It's very common in many countries that the Association selects another manager temporarily for a tournament. Should NZF do the same?

Yes. Give people time to get ready  for 2030. Don't bring Tommy Smith, Michael Boxall or Kosta any more. Start Alex Paulsen and be more harsh on the back line, can't continue to concede soft goals like before. Could take Luke Brooke Smith as a substitute.

We should be taking our best available squad to these tournaments, and then using the India games to blood young players. Boxall still makes our best 4 CBs for me.

Bazeley shouldnt have a part to play, but that's because he should be out of a job

I know he isn't 28 yet but think Sarpreet needs a break. He needs to focus on his club game and hopefully get into the 1st division in Portugal. Playing against quality U23 teams in the 2nd division is ok but not what the AW needs right now.

28 is too young to rule someone out for 2030.

Couple of 40 yr olds at this year’s WC.

Nelfoos is right the India games are the ones to go all experimental in.

And the sequence is good with the 2 more difficult matches in the longer earlier window, with Japan not as far from Europe as NZ. Even older guys like the Woodsman and Thomas may travel. I remember their younger selves in 2014? against Japan. Wood a brace in a 4-2 loss

Baze will officially be coach still I believe, so no change.

At this stage, bring our best team, build on what we did. We want to show we are serious in mini tournaments like this.

Plenty of windows to blood others later. Talk of age limits trifles with the invitation
