It's just the same old SACK RICKI garbage we've heard for ages. Everything that goes right is dumb luck; everything that goes wrong is Ricki's fault. (Not, for example, Smeltzy missing simple headers or Tommy Smith going to sleep.)

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if Nelsen (if he is actually keen on management) has his sights set higher than managing New Zealand.

Still just stupid speculation though.

Some of the stuff in that article is crap, Danny Hay, really?

I do think though that it is time for RH to move on.  14 wins isn't a brilliant record when he's been in charge for a long time.  Lets not forget that he alienated people like Nelson and Elliott after the fiasco in 2004 which he was a major part of, also remember he tried to blame players for a shocking tour to South America that saw Che Bunce and Noah Hickey retire (prematurely in Noah's case).

Maybe its time for someone like Gavin Wilkinson to be given a chance.

No more defensive, longball reactive football.

Free flowing, attacking, possession based football with our midfield of 'X' '?' and 'whatsisname, you know, that guy with all the skills'.  Duh.  Ricki is just ignoring all our talented ball playing midfielders that we have in abundance as they don't suit his negative, conservative three up front style.

There are players out there who are being overlooked.  A certain Chris James springs to mind.  I realise he's not everyones cup of tea, weemac should be playing in that style, he does for CCM, then there's Keat.  We have creative ballplaying players, just RHs tactics do not make use of them.  Same thing with the Nix.  Pity Brown retired but oh well.  We could have taken Daniel don't forget, and who knows, he might have done well considering the conditions would have been like home for him.

Why not, we are bemoaning the lack for midfielders here.  Certain people (yourself maybe Patrick) wanted Ryan to be here, an even older player who has played very infrequently of late, then there's Ivan, Mark, Rory, Chris etc

So the solution to our midfield problems being overlooked by Herbert are McGlinchey (who is already starting), Chris James, (the Injured) Dan Keat, and Daniel (whom I love, but has just been dropped from the Phoenix, but he's from somewhere hot so maybe he would go ok)?

New Caledonia (pop. 256,000) are better than us, so we should replace Ricki with a manager from there.

Per head of population they produce 16 times  the number of decent players as we do.

...And better managers - actually this is serious - the best manager to ever come out of Oceania is a New Caledonian, Antoine Kombouare who coached Paris Saint Germain, the biggest club in France, 2009 until January this year when the club chairman did a dirty on him whilst they led the league and replaced him with Carlo Ancelotti ex-Chelsea. Previously he'd taken second div. Valenciennes to the top league and coached Strasbourg. PSG appeared in two French Cup finals, winning one, and the Europa League under Kombouare.

Europa Lge Coaching Record: P: 17  W: 10  D: 3  L: 4

Overall sucess % as manager French 1st and 2nd divs. : W: 37%  L: 33%

He's recently been linked with the vacant Ghana national team job and Fulham but is still available I think...

Kombouare had a distinguished playing career - he played in the French top flight 1982-1995 for Nantes and PSG (where he won the league and cup) and then for Aberdeen. The defender became a legend at PSG for the winning header he scored in the dying seconds of a UEFA Cup quarter final against Real Madrid, in the 1992-93 season. The header qualified PSG for the semis. His habit of netting tie-deciding headers earned him the name of "Casque d'Or", which means "Golden Helmet" in French. In 1994-95, during a UEFA Champions League quarter final against Johan Cruyff's FC Barcelona dream team, he captained Paris Saint-Germain to a resounding and unexpected 2-1 win which qualified the French side for the semi-final, which they lost to AC Milan.

My Top 4  Oceania Players of all Time: 1. Christian Karembeu (New Caledonia; French World cup winner 1998)

2. Pascal Vahirua (Tahiti; 23 caps for France incl. Euro '92; French Ligue 1 1985-1999 Auxerre, Caen)

3rd equal. Antoine Kombouare (New Caledonia) / Wynton Rufer (New Zealand)

Fuck me, are people still pushing the Chris James bandwagon because he spent a couple of years at Fulham in his teens?  Sean Fallon was a youth player at Liverpool and they are an even bigger club so clearly he should be in there.

James has failed.  Boat has sailed. Game over.

In my view RH has had his time but there is the issue of timing and who to replace him with? RH is still in credit for qualifying and playing well at the World Cup [and rightly so in my view]. My time line would be this: RH in charge throughout the coming WC schedule, including Brasil if we qualify. Appoint a new coach either immediately after Brasil or as soon as our WC run ends.

In terms of who to replace him with.... tough one. Emblen looks like is being groomed for the role. Can't see NZF spending the money to attract someone like the Aussies do with Gus Hiddink.

Did you guys watch the NZ vs Jamacia game ?

If you did, you would have noticed there was minimal long ball. I liked that game. Sure, we didn't win but it was a good game and we actually scored more than 1 goal.......

why can't we play more like that ?

Agreed (although I'd prefer it with a different formation)

People act like its an either/or setting between playing like Barcelona or hoofing longballs into the opposition half in the hope that one will eventually get brought down for the finish or nodded in. Not only is there an obvious spectrum to this but you can play other styles as well. For instance, a direct counterattacking game that isn't either of these things and can be good to watch - absorb pressure from deep, play through balls down the wing and spread the opposition defence wide for the through ball or cross.

I think we have enough young talented players that we don't have to play the the hoof-and-hope game, but that doesn't mean we have to play tika-taka either.

i guess in terms of journalism's main goal - web page clicks to justify their advertising client's spend - this article is a success. Speculation around the managerial job and nz football's national hero combined into one article = winning (for stuff.co.nz anyway)

not badly written aside from chris wood's name being dropped into the paragraph listing the ageing players the author thinks could be dropped... hmmm...

some ridiculous comments above though... chris james? Really?

midfield is our problem area, we can't play possession football until we either discover some international quality mids or some of our promising youngsters gain experience. Ironically we are better equipped to play sides technically better than us, and ricki is decent at setting up a side to play that way... not the worst way to tread water until we find those mids... (is howieson a central mid or more of an attacking winger? forgive my ignorance...)

liked the look of mcgeorge in the limited time i saw him too, perhaps others who have seen more of him can comment

Central mid is his preferred position, but most of his serious football he's played out wide.

DP joining the sack Ricki chorus now. So much tabloid, so little journalism.

Worthington: maybe you could post your article here and be prepared to debate it on the forum rather than a one-way opinion piece on the stuff website?

I just posted the Worthington article in the OFC thread. I don't think it's too bad actually, still a bit light on substance, but an improvement on the complete shit we get from Billy Harris and Danny Hay.

Exhibit A, conclusion:"Both the All Whites and the Phoenix have a core of good players but they need a dedicated fulltime coach to devote themselves to their respective causes and implement clever tactics."

Sure, because the A-League lasts as long as the EPL and the AWs are constantly playing friendlies and tournaments.
