5th Placed Asian nation, Who will it be?

ok my analysis:
both teams are fluid and fast pace. Good at the counter attack and don't give the opposition any shot at recomposing themselves.
Finishing wasn't the best, but a few of those chances could have easily gone in.
Lots of players have the ability to cut across and also to shift the ball from one side of the body to the other.

NZ will be ok. If we can  make sure that our defense stands strong and doesn't give them too much space, then I think we should be able to out muscle them. We also should use our midfield to our full advantage. Players like Elliot, McGlinchey etc need to keep posession for us because these two sides seem to rarely contain the posession for very long so if we can dominate the midfield area and hold them away from the ball we could be alright. Bertos will need to be our counter attacking tool. with him breaking out and pulling out their defenses to put a ball into Smeltz who should be able to put some away.

I'm actually feeling a bit more confident after that. A performance like the Italy game and we could be at the world cup!!

im more concerned about the all whites build up. a friendly game against jordan isnt enough. esp when your trying to get good combinations sorted.

good to get your take on their strengths etc PlayWF

our physical strength, that you suggest will help, might depend a bit on the referee's attitude

does anyone who saw the feed have a preference for who we face, based on what they saw and what they generally 'know' about the sides??

Both teams were just countering each other, Bahrain looked faster in there counters.
I expect Bahrain to win the next game.

um i would say Bahrain did look confident and had like 12 corners to 3 but they were at home so who knows...?

I'd prefer Bahrain because neither of us have made it in before anyway

Did you mean to say that differently? Because the way I'm reading that now it seems you think NZ has never qualified before but that could just be me.

i fear the next game being 0-0, and then both our games against them being 0-0 and the neutral observers questioning the attendance at the WC finals of any of the three teams

agree on the AWs build up dark horse, could we not have played Iran in Tehran yesterday?

should we try and play the loser of Bahrain/Saudi on 14th of Oct?  and should we be optimistic that we're going to win the tie and organise a home friendly against an Australian team of some description for November 18th? (since it is a FIFA date and the squad is together)

OK, so i am completely ignoring the difficulty of organising such matches - would just be good to see is all.

Sorry, hope all that doesn't come accross as being negative.  my positive comment would be that i think our playoff should be competetive and exciting.

If we play Bahrain we will be able to use the All White strip made famous by the '82 team in both games...
Both sides were very evenly matched, if it comes down to "Who wants it the most" then Bahrain will edge it I think, but maybe they should have made more of home advantage. The team that doesn't get to take on the Mighty Kiwi will count themselves unlucky for sure.
You know we belong together...

lol Brain expolosion!! Haha I guess what I mean is I'd prefer either of us because the Saudis have been up there for the past 4 or 5.
And I'm only 20 so I havn't experienced it yet - so I guess thats why it came out like that lol

Asia is nowhere near as physical as Australia/New Zealand/England. They go down at every opportunity. It can be frustrating.

They have good touch and smooth passing. We didn't deserve to beat Bahrain away last year. We got lucky.

Having said that, we nearly made it past Iran in 1998 so you never know. For WC2006 we had to make it through South America. Yikes!

Looking at your squad you have too many local players. When we played our A-League XI against Kuwait they beat us in Canberra in an Asian Cup qualifier a few months ago.

Good luck.

Asia may not be as physical as you say, but the fact is NZ has not played them for a long time. 1981. We can only judge by what we watch on internet or TV. I will be as positive as I can be. I just wish the All Whites had more friendly matches. Look at Australia. They havent played for a little bit and got beat by South Korea. Now they (aussie) will use the same old line that they were missing afew of there players. Never the less. they were rusty. and thats why in my eyes ..Lost. Anyway Good luck to the All Whites in there friendly against Jordan. KIWI!! KIWI

The Bahrain right back, Abdullah Omer, was dreadful - possible point for NZ to exploit (assuming Bahrain get through of course), as I imagine he wouldn't like Bertos or McGlinchey running at him... the centre backs of both teams were prone to hoofing, and has been said earlier, both these teams are quick on the counter so we'll need to be very organised defensively.

The noise you lads create in Wellington will need to be really special for that night, because the noise they ramp up in this part of the world is pretty impressive too - will take a bit to intimidate the opposition.

also, both sides were very composed technically. Despite some less than clinical finishing, a couple of the Saudi moves in the second half were very impressive.

On top of that, given that Saudi have been world cup regulars of recent times, the All Whites would have to prefer coming up against Bahrain.

Bahrain is very, very good at home usually. Were unlucky not to beat Aussie as they completely dominated them from start to finish.

But really, it doesn't really matter who we play. Both teams are going to be heavy favourites against us. Still believe we can do it, though!
