Qatar is out!!

FT Japan 1-1 Qatar.

Not enough points to nab 3rd place in pool group A.

Down to Uzbekistan and Bahrain for 3rd place playoffs.

Still either between Saudi/Iran/N.Korea fighting for the other 3rd place playoffs from pool group B.

They all look fairly strong.

Uzbekistan has dodge the bullet enough, but they need to win Bahrain to secure 3rd place. They seem likely to be Pool A 3rd place getters. Made home team Japan look terrible in the 1-1 draw.

Still even steven in Pool B tho.

C'mon Saudi - another trip to Dubai might be exactly what the doctor ordered for me.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

I'd agree with that assessment, expecting either of North Korea or Saudi to beat either of Uzbekistan or Bahrain. Given that Saudi are at home in their remaining group match, I expect them to win and clinch second place. I can't see Iran winning away to South Korea, so North Korea would be playing Bahrain in the Asian 5th placed playoff if my predictions are right (not usual!).

But here's an interesting thought - could South Korea be tempted to not put up a strong side or performance against Iran, knowing that North Korea could well need Iran to lose in order to progress?

The South Korea coach has already mention in the news that he would like to see North Korea in the World Cup Finals because they never have been in the same World Cup Finals ever. So they will put out a strong side against Iran and Iran has been playing bad for the last couple of years.

Do not want the Uzbeks. Even though they haven't gone that well lately, they have a very good team.

But Bahrain scare the bejesus out of me. They are the kind of lightning fast counterattacking team that could kill us off with ease. I feel like we'd have more of a chance against Uzbek or Nth Korea who play a conservative brand of football and don't exactly belt the goals in.

Bahrain have scored 5 goals in 7 games so far in this round of qualifying. In both Socceroos matches they had their chances but did not convert any.

They would be my choice of who to play but I also think it will be North Korea or Iran, neither of which will provide a nice cosy environment for the away fixture.

Have watched all the Asian games, and would want Bahrain before Uzbek or North Korea.

I've watched a lot of the asian qualifiers (though I've missed a few of the more recent ones) and from what I've seen, Bahrain would definitely be the team we would want to play. Uzbekistan looked quality in many of the matches I've seen.

This would be the same awe-inspiring Uzbekistan which, discounting a 4-0 victory over Qatar, has managed just 1 goal in 6 matches?

Anyway, whoever we get will be tough, but I'd rather not have to play the first away leg in 25-30 degrees of middle east heat against teams like Saudi and Bahrain.

Well out of those options (Iran, Saudi,Bahrain, Uzbekistan, Nth Korea) Bahrain and Uzbekistan has not appeared in the World Cup finals. After their recent performances, I like either of them to grab a lucky goal to win in the 5th place play-offs. I'm sure we will fair better away in their country than they would fair in NZ.

So either of those team would be nice for us.

The other three teams I rather not face them, but I am still quite confident that we can knock them off anyway.

Cut and paste from another forum.

June 17 will be a MASSIVE day for AFC.

In Group A, Bahrain hosts Uzbekistan in a fight for 3rd place. Bahrain will get third place with a win or a draw while Uzbekistan will get it with a win. It's that simple

In Group B, already qualified South Korea hosts Iran and 7 hours later, Saudi hosts North Korea. The standings are 2) North Korea (11 pts +2), 3) Saudi (11 pts -2), and 4) Iran (10 pts +1). Here are the qualification scenarios for each team.

North Korea
+ If they win
--Advance directly to the WC
+ If they tie
--Advance directly to the WC with an Iran tie or loss
--Advance to the 3rd place playoff with an Iran win
+ If they lose
--Advance to the 3rd place playoff with an Iran loss or an Iran tie that results in a better GD for North Korea
--Eliminated from the WC with an Iran win or tie that results in a worse GD for North Korea

Saudi Arabia
+If they win
--Advance directly to the WC
+If they tie
--Advance to the 3rd place playoff with an Iran tie or loss
--Eliminated from the WC with an Iran win
+If they lose
--Advance to the 3rd place playoff with an Iran loss
--Eliminated from the WC with an Iran win or tie

Iran
+If they win
--Advance directly to the WC with a Saudi/North Korea tie
--Advance to the 3rd playoff with either a Saudi or North Korea win
+If they tie
--Advance to the 3rd place playoff with a North Korea win/Saudi loss or a Saudi win/North Korea loss that results in a better GD for Iran
--Eliminated from the WC with a Saudi/DPRK tie or a Saudi win/North Korea loss that results in a worse GD for Iran
+If they lose
--Eliminated from the WC

yes, it is a pretty exciting last day in Asia, and following it on the internet at work will provide fantastic warm up for our match against SA.

i've already worked out my idea of who the Allwhites should play in All of the FIFA windows for the rest of the year for each different scenario, which i can't be bothered boring you all with now (assumes that to get a friendly Ricky just rings them up and they just say yes...)

in the event that it were Iran, i have bee toying with the idea of going (agreed with Iranian collegue over one or five beers).  Just thought i'd try get a show of interest on this and whether people think more than just three kiwis would go??  thought i might drop an email to NZSoccer to see if they intend taking the away allocation, as i expect it could be quite costly for them to get a whole block of tickets for only three fans (not really sure how this works).  quite hypothetical because Iran aren't looking too likely, and i personally probably wouldn't go to any of the other possibilities.

they should've rigged the draw to make both Koreas at home on the last day so they could have simultaneous kick off.  if Iran manage a draw (or whatever) the other teams know what they have to do, and although for Saudi only the win would see them qualify automatically, they would be very cautious knowing that a draw at least keeps them alive.

To be fair to Walksox, he didn't seem to really mean "rig" the draw - just getting a synchronisation of kick-off times on the final matches I think?
Permalink Permalink

Correct, thank you SiNZ, and it was more a remark rather than a serious complaint. But remember, it was a situation not too disimilar to this that led to synchronisation of kick off times on final group matches at tournaments.

and besides, if they were played at the same time, i would only lose 90 minutes of concentration when i am meant to be working, not 180

Due to recent political developments in Iran we should be hoping that the Iranian football team gets the 5th place playoff spot. If that happens, New Zealand can claim security concerns and ask FIFA to stage the Iranians home match at a neutral venue, thus eliminating their fanatical home support from the equation. Kind of like the playoff with China in '81 except Singapore wasn't exactly a neutral venue.

Crafty, but I don't think it'll wash. By the time the playoff rolls around all protests will have been well and truly quashed, the ringleaders tucked away deep in prison basements with electrodes attached to their testicles. Maybe we could claim concerns about a uranium leak form a nuclear weapons plant?

Sth Korea 1 Iran 1

See AWB's previous post for all the possible combinations for the top 3 in this group, but it looks bad for Iran to snare a spot.

Oz beat Japan 2-1 earlier.

Behrain and Ukbekistan battling it out, if it stays at 0-0 Bahrain go through to the Asian playoff. Ukbeks need a win. Big game in Group B between DRP Korea and Saudi Arabia is tomorrow 6am, hoping for a draw that would see the Saudis go through to the playoff.

Well if my maths is right, no matter what results of the final game Saudi Arabia will finish 3rd in their group.

Therefore playoff will be Saudi vs Bahrain.

If Saudi beat DPRK they finish second.

ok so...
NK win -> NK 2nd in group, Iran 3rd (playoff)
Draw -> NK 2nd in group, Suadi 3rd
Saudi win -> Saudi 2nd in group, 3rd place depend on size of win

Saudi and Bahrain - worst combination of teams for us imo. Unless we can find an actual defence between now and the playoffs.
