Let's have it, your memories of everything from thumping Mexico 4-0 in 1980 to being at the World Cup in 1982 with our very own All Whites.
So was Ricki Herbert in the game against Mexico?

Must say 30,000 All Whites fans at Mount Smart created an atmosphere.  The Navy lads turned up with song sheets, so there were a core of 200 singing.  But 30,000 expectant fans cheering the All Whites along was great.

Having half the country stay up to 4 in the morning to watch the All Whites play Saudi Arabia, was special, they had to win by five goals to keep their dreams alive.  Massive ratings for the final play off against China in Singapore too.
It was big, just very big.

My biggest buzz was when a mate and I went up to Singapore for the ultimate game against China.
We were in a very crowded stadium, with very few Kiwis' around us.When I waved the supporters scarf I was told that I couldn't as it was considered a political banner!!! But when the Chinese scored all of a sudden all theses chinese flags appeared and nothing was done about it,so much for a neutral venue.
After the game we went ot the team's hotel and got plastered ,the hotel put on a great spread and booze , for those who haven't been to Singapore drinking is a very expensive hobby.

The ground was packed. Had an average view at the opposite end to the clubrooms in the corner. The 3-3 draw versus Australia on Anzac day 1981 was a highlight. What about canman? He would be about 42.

My greatest memory is of my uncles telling me everything about our qualification path and the incredible excitement it created within this country.

Three for me, and two for them.

The Saudi game - could well be more remarkable than Liverpool coming back from 3 - 0, All Whites  had to score 5 and did it by half time.

Grant Turner's headed goal from, christ what was it.. 20 metres out at least, in the away game against Australia was awesome. Best headed goal I've seen, and still is.
And that 2-0 result effectively ended Rudi Gutendorf's career as Socceroos coach too.

Any advance on 50 metres for GT's headed goal. Wasn't there a 200kph wind blowing his way as well?

Has anyone read Sam Malcomson's book? It's not bad. Not enough scandal though. Goes on about the keeper thing for a bit too long

I got the book (well once I get it back from my mate).
Don't think there was too much in it - just went for FVH's strengths. Was hoping that the reasons were a bit more sordid.

I heard that Richard Wilson pissed in Adshead's water bottle for a gag, which horribably back-fired

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite

That was when beating Japan 5-0 was normal and South Korea was a win or a draw and the toughest thing about Indonesia was chosing the food.

Coupla things;
1) The Ormond that played vs Mexico was younger brother Duncan, not the older Ian.
2) Hadn't heard the "piss in bottle" story, but Wilson was a volatile character whereas van Hattum had a very placid temperament. van Hattum was also a better allround keeper, who was offered a contract at Feyenoord after Spain 82 but it was canned when the club holding his registration in NZ - Manurewa - demanded a transfer fee of $30,000NZ. That must've hurt.
3) There were two very distinct camps in that AWs squad; the Gisborne and Manurewa camps. The two coaches clashed quite a bit over the merits of their own players vs the merits of the other's. With hindsight, it's quite amazing that the squad did actually get on as well as they did.

This won't happen again either i mean in the future we may qualify for World Cups but i can't see it being this exciting or dramatic or having this much of an impact on the entire country.

Three for me, and two for them.

Buffon II, you may be right but just looking at the recent cricket world cup where we qualified for the finals that didn't catch the nations attention at all. No excitement, no drama...nothing like the 1982 All Whites campaign. Pretty hard to replicate these things. I mean I attended the 1999 Confederations Cup in Mexico and that was just the best time. The supporters and fans we went with had the time of our lives, interacting with players and their families and the team played some great football against USA, German and Brasil -  but we tried to replicate all that at the France 2003 Confed Cup and it was an unmitigated disaster.
It's nice to look back and reflect on the good times but we've got to look forward and move with the times. I'm sure if the All Whites can win the OFC WCQ's, interest will build. Its who we play after that that becomes the vital thing. Win the next group and who know show the country will react. Australia went off when they made the last World Cup. Never say never dude:-)

Fantastic memories of the 82 team.  Watched every game.  My folks took me up to watch China in Auckland,  1-0 to NZ Herbert scored that day.  Have a copy of the book Road to Spain and have read it a number of times,  never get sick of it.  Wish there was a hi-lights package on DVD

It could easily be arranged. I have the 1 hour video at home, and also a 1 hour cassette from Replay Radio of commentary highlights of the campaign. I should sort out transfering them both to modern mediums.

I was lucky to go to almost every game , the only games I missed were the 13 nil drubbing of the Fijians I was in Bermuda at the time ,the local paper had an article about it and the the games in Kuwait and Saudi Arabria , I was too chicken to go there after the incident at Mt Smart.
The most enjoyable game in the first round was the leason the All Whites gave to the Australians, the Sydney Morning Herald had a full pages spread on the "mighty Socceroos " and all they had about the Al Whites was the team list, well say no more except that the natives were not that friendly after the game.

BT's goal against Aussie was simply magic.

I remember Herberts headed goal, accidently punching the beam in the lounge (ouch!) when Rufer scored the winner against China from what seemed like halfway, Woodin and Sumners' goals against Scotland (that eliminated the Scots as they missed out on GD), losing count of the number of times the commentator exclaimed "ZICO" against Brasil, that Wilson set a record for the number of minutes without conceeding a goal and NZ a record for the number of games played to qualify for a WC. Oh, and feeling sorry that the cops had caught the guy that threw the can at the ref in the Kuwait game.

Apparently, the Kuwaiti's arrived in NZ with a briefcase full of cash and didn't leave with it so the story is they bought the ref.

Also, I saw an interview with Adshead where he said Wilson got dropped on performance for a couple of bad games and soft goals toward the end of the campaign.

G'olé! : OFFICIAL FIFA FILM OF THE 1982 WORLD CUP SCREENING ON ESPN TUESDAY

"FIFA Official Film of the 1982 World Cup" - ESPN Tuesday 6 am

(Narrated by Sean Connery! Music by Rick Wakeman!)

Worth copying to DVD !!!

Relive those great memories of '82 (or experience them for the first time if you're a young 'un) with ESPN's "FIFA Official Films" series screening the feature documentary of the 1982 Finals. Story of and review of the tournament with highlights (101 minutes).

Yes, there was a time when the official film of the World Cup was a big event and it screened in cinemas around the world as well as on TV (except not in the backwater of NZ of course).

These films are great - last week was "Argentina 1978"  - you get match highlights and  stories from the tournament.

I think the 1982 film has "behind-the-scenes" with the All Whites in their dressing room - they were the only team to grant access if my memory serves me correctly.

"G'olé! is the official documentary film of the 1982 FIFA World Cup held in Spain.

The film is narrated by Sean Connery and the score was written by Rick Wakeman. It tells the story of the 1982 FIFA World Cupwhich was won by Italy who beat West Germany in the final. It also highlights New Zealand - who played the most games in order to qualify - and Cameroon - a rising African force."

Amazingly, Rick Wakeman's soundtrack was even released as an album. Listen to it here:

http://www.allmusic.com/album/gole%21-mw0000453063

Yes, there was a time when the All Whites were sound-tracked by Rick Wakeman!!!

If you don't have Sky TV the series of films is currently daily on the BBC and a new film is available every day on "BBC iPlayer" on demand for a week after broadcast (currently up to "England '66"):

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01qq861/episodes/player

Install the necessary free software on your computer to access the territorially-restricted BBC iPlayer:

http://hola.org/

(You turn it on with a click whenever you want to access a territorially-restricted site and choose which country the site is located - it fools the restricted site into thinking you are in that country)

Reviews:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084011/reviews?ref_=tt_urv

"Highlights? Well, we get to see the New Zealand coach swear at his players for five minutes (apparently it was a half-time pep talk)."

"You see it all! Two very different, and yet ironic, beginnings of young careers: Maradona's first World Cup for Argentina and the young Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland. The perennial greats: Italy, West Germany, Brazil and not to mention the great Michel Platini of France. The wacky and weird: Kuwait, and how the Sheikh stops a match! The long-shots: Cameroon and their musical culture, as well as New Zealand and their desire simply to stay alive.
The commentary by Sean Connery is brilliant and poetic once intermingled with the action and scenic views of the host country, Spain..."

My memory was being at the Singapore National Stadium, when the ref blew the final whistle.

Prior to the game I was waving my NZ scarf and was told by security that it was a political Banner and I would be kicked out if I carried on, but when the Chinese scored al of a sudden all these red flags appeared all around me, I gestured to thse security monkeys and thay did nothing about it!! I got the last laugh, when we won and I told the  monkies what I thought of them.

Then having a big piss up at the Sherton hotel, Charlie Dempsey pulled his wallet out and I got absolutely plastered, got my scarf signed by the team,  still have the scarf.

"G'olé! FIFA Official Film of the 1982 World Cup" -

Which screened on ESPN Tuesday 6 am was great stuff.

Amazing to see Frank van Hattum feature in the opening credits (footage of him vs. USSR in 3-0 defeat berating his defence etc. and contrasting with the ice cold Schoemacher ,the German goalie in another match)

Good seven minute sequence of behind-the-scenes with the All Whites vs. USSR and match footage. Nice to relive the chances we created in that match - had a few shots on target and the USSR goalie had to deal with the odd attempt. Unfortunately, as Sean Connery narrates, he was the best Soviet goalkeeper since the legendary Yashin.

Nice as a tribute to Duncan Cole too who can be seen a lot in the NZ footage.

Respectful commentary by Sean Connery on the All Whites giving them credit for their 70,000 mile trip in qualifying games and giving it all in the Finals.

Love the comment about the Scotland v Brazil game - "The team who thought they were the best in the world playing the team who knew they were the best." What a great Scotland side that was though - so many of the biggest names in the English top flight a the time (Dalglish, Souness, Archibald, Wark, Strachan, Hansen, Brazil, Robertson, Hartford, Jordan).

And Brazil weren't bad either!

Loved the slowed-down match footage with Rick Wakeman's ("Yes" group) prog rock soundtrack.

KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN TO HELP FINISH 1982 ALL WHITES DOCUMENTARY

I'm posting an email I received from NZ football fan and film-maker Sa'id Milton who needs a couple of dollars from everyone to help finish his documentary about the 1982 All Whites.

I know he has tracked down lots of rare and interesting footage and has completed many interesting interviews.

I can vouch for Mr Milton's honesty and integrity and have been happy in my dealings with him in the past.

He's done a lot of film work for football in NZ over the years.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi there :)

Tonight the Kickstarter fundraising campaign was launched in order to try and raise what I need to finish '82 And All That and get it to screen.

The key now is to spread the word! the campaign is calling for $2 contributions from as many people as possible (larger contributions also welcomed!) so for that to be effective, lots of people need to hear the call!!

Can you please forward these links to as many people as you possibly can:

Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1945504849/82-and-all-that

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/82-And-All-That/737423653008523

Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxcREHIXJxM17TLS_W8Fysg

Each of these has a space for people to ask me questions about any aspect of the project too. If you've got any questions for me, just fire them through.

So yeh, please spread the word - I want to make this film happen, and I can't do it on my own!

If this isn't your kind of thing, please just ignore, I won't be offended :)

Thanks

"82 AND ALL THAT" FEATURE DOCUMENTARY IN PRODUCTION

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1945504849/82...

With NZ facing tough times in 1981, the All Whites became unlikely heroes, uniting the country on a rollercoaster World Cup campaign

82 And All That is a documentary feature film about the All Whites (New Zealand's national football team) and their quest to qualify for the 1982 World Cup. It brings to life their incredible story by mixing original interviews with match action, archive footage, and an awesome era soundtrack!

It's more than a sports story - it's a slice of social history that shines a light on an incredible chapter in New Zealand's story.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/82-And-All-That/737...

Preview Clip #1:

This film is a labour of love that I've been working on for over a decade. Completely independent and self-funded to this point, I'm now asking for help to raise the money needed to finish the film's post production and pay the clearance fees for the footage, images and music we're using. It's great to have gathered clips from around the globe, but they don't come cheap - and I didn't want to cut corners with this story!

I want the football community in New Zealand, and sports fans in general, to feel as though they have a stake in this story. I'd like to think that dads and mums, who remember this campaign from when they were kids, would take their own kids along to the cinema to watch the story unfold again and relive the memories.

I'm an All Whites fan, an historian, and a total doco junkie - so I'm combining my passions in this project! There haven't been enough feature length films about great NZ sports stories, and this is one step to filling that void.

Please help me bring this awesome story to life!

"You have achieved something I thought I would never see and that is the real story of 82" John Adshead
