When I left the UK to move to NZ in 2003 the first time I heard the name 'Rufer' was when we moved here. No one in the UK had even heard of him and I have followed football all my life.
What a load of Bollocks that is. Rufer well known if you followed football and not just your pub team.

Maybe never heard of Held or Emmerich but maybe Tikowski. All Stars of that club and Germany. Point is it doesn't make a player any less of a star on the euro or world stage because someone has no knowledge of them.

Secondly you can ask anyone in the UK that follows football and I bet 99% will never have heard of him again, thats not to say he wasnt a good player!

How about watching European Cup & CupWCup finals etc on TV in the UK they've been on since the days of Puskas & Gento etc
Rufer scored in the 1992 Final v Monaco shown on TV live in the UK so you can't think you know too much about the history other than the EPL.
Yes I mentioned the 3 German players as stars of that country but again had you ever heard of them? Remember 1966 if you English. Won't make them any less of a star if you haven't.

Doubt it's a fact - he was Bundesliga Golden boot, 93-94 Champions League Golden boot shared with Ronald Koeman and scored the winner in the UEFA Cup final the year before that - plenty of people will have known who he was.

When I lived in England there was an interview with Wenger one time when he mentioned Wynton breaking his heart by scoring for Werder in that Cup Winners Cup Final when he was managing Monaco - that planted the name with a few football fans I knew there

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC Hudson come to us with a recommendation from Ryan Nelsen? I wonder if NZF has had any suggestions from its 'old boys' network this time around. And who they might listen to, if anyone.

Si Elliot and Oughton appear to be well connected in the USA. Don't Nelsen has been involved in the game much in the last 2-3 years. Shame, I thought he'd kick on as a coach but he must be wanting a change after a long career in the sport.

I think Nelsen is now a players agent so should still have good contacts in the football world. He also did a law degree in the US before he went to the IPL so he's well qualified for his current gig. And one bad experience, coaching Toronto FC in the MLS, shouldn't rule him out from coming back to coaching at some stage if he wants to.

except he doesn't as he has stated before he only did it as a favour for his mate that was running the club at the time and they both got sacked.
When Hudson applied for the job, don't know if Nelsen gave him a recommendation but given Hudson worked for Redknapp and Redknapp was the one that took Nelsen to Spurs and then QPR I wouldn't be surprised.
The interview panel last time included Ivan Vicelich (who sat out the Ramon interview due to conflict of interest) but don't think they have asked any players this time

Had a long career with a few highlights. Assistant manager at Basel for 8 seasons, assistant manager at Austria NT for 2, current technical director for Malaysia (a team a lot worse than us). His only full managerial jobs have been in the Austrian lower/youth leagues.
Make of that what you will, he's insanely experienced and seems like a talented guy but hasn't been proven at a very high level

Oddly, I knew who Wynton Rufer was when I lived in the UK and before I moved to NZ 20 years ago, but I've never heard of Fritz Schmid!

Wonder if he will enter NZ on a "Specific Purpose Work Visa" - "examples of people who may be able to apply include professional coaches. If coaching at a National Level you can stay up to 3 years... "

I can answer this one - his role as Malaysia technical director ended early/mid last year. Has been based there since, doing AFC stuff.
