All Whites History

So I had a post in mind where I'd put up what I believe to be the top 5 All Whites matches/results ever - until my highights from the Italy and Slovakia matches in South Africa got blocked and my YouTube channel was threatened with closure....

With that in mind, here is my "list", and then footage of the other 3 games, which hopefully doesn't create any potential legal issues!

v Italy, 2010 - D 1-1

v Serbia, 2010 - W 1-0

v Slovakia, 2010 - D 1-1

v Israel, 1985 - W 3-1

v Uruguay, 1995 - D 2-2

[for the record, my #6 is Mexico 1980, in case anyone thought I'd forgotten it!]

WTF?

No games from our recent glorious Oceania Cup victory make the list?

What? It's surely the 2009 0-0 draw with an Iraq side that hadn't scored in it's previous two matches

I'm not sure, I'm guessing there is some rule about copyrighted content - to be honest, I wasn't going to argue all said and done...

The sponsor was Noel Leeming, was on for all 5 games of the tour... which considering there was very limited TV coverage from Chile, and none from Uruguay, makes for an awesome deal all round...

Personally for Drama and edge of seat excitement the Play off v China in Singapore has to be right up there

And of course the match here against Bahrain wasn't half bad.

And then that 2-0 win in Sydney in 1981 with Grant Turners headed goal.....

I'm crying. Our backline with two Premier League players and a Championship player. Fallon up front in Championship (IIRC?), Wood at West Brom, Smeltz on his way to being one of the two most prestigious strikers in the A-league, Simon Elliot- who had played in the Premier League, Killen who played for Celtic and Man City.  (Okay so there was also Christie, Lochhead and Bertos, with Clapham on the bench!) But still it genuinely makes me fairly sad...

Still a number of that team were involved in the HiH, so who knows.

Doesn't it annoy you that FIFA (usually) complain about these highlights on YouTube but never put anything up somewhere themselves...useless bunch of idiots aren't they ?

I was at the WLG game AW's v Aussie, I'd just moved to WLG and in the space of 6 weeks, saw Warriors v Bulldogs, All Blacks v France and this game, all at the Stadium, and a few weeks later watched NZ beat Aussie in Basketball. Great time for sporting events in the capital...

Great stuff. I was at the Fiji game and all of the other home games at Mt Smart during that campaign. Some of the fondest memories of my life, sitting on the bank, drinking Coke by the gallon and seeing our national side create history.

I didn't count the goals on this but I'm guessing the footage still has one goal missing. Some technical reason from memory. I'll also remember this as Dave Bright's only appearance of the whole thing. On as a sub at 10-0 up or something.

actually, am really pleased to say this includes the goal that was originally missing!  to this day, no one can explain how TVNZ made highlights of a 13-0 win but only included 12 goals... as you'll see, the footage was perfectly useable, so, yeh, weird... but Steve Sumner's 6 had 2 headers, 2 left-foot, 2 right-foot :)

Mine had the addition of a bus ride up from Hamilton and back with the football club for some of them.

I've got a cassette tape at home (ask your parents, kids) of an hour's audio highlights from Radio NZ, with Alan Richards commentating. It was available for sale after we qualified. Also have the Murray Allison fronted TVNZ highlights show somewhere on VHS. If I remember Murray had an excellent jacket on for the programme, reddish tweed or something. Natty dresser, was Murray.

Wow, 2 of each, the perfect double-hattrick!

Have to say that was one of the best set piece performances I've ever seen from any kiwi team, male/female/young/old.  Corners finding our own players heads, our players actually getting the headers on goal etc

Big ups to that keeper too, hilarious, was he an outfield player  given the No1 jersey at the last minute?

Fully agree, best AW game that I've ever attended too.  I really enjoyed watching the fireworks and punch-ups amongst the Serbs when they realised they were going to lose to us (also a wee bit stoked to see myself in the footage a few times AW/Nixed out).

Another random clip from 1981 - this is the game away in China, the 0-0... for some reason TVNZ never kept any footage of this, but luckily someone recorded it on VHS (which were pretty damned expensive back then) and hence there is still a copy existing today...

Pretty tight game, notable for Steve Wooddin getting concussed and the All Whites wearing a strip with their sponsor's logo plastered across the back!!

Evening all - for no particular reason, have made this match the latest clip I've uploaded...

I remember being there live, was an incredible result, but a weird atmosphere as it was staged as the curtain raiser to a rugby match (no, seriously...).  Anyway, it was our first ever home win over Australia in World Cup qualifying, and in fact our last ever win over Australia in World Cup qualifying... to put that in more perspective, in the 7 WCQs we played against the Socceroos after this game (1993, 1997, 2001, 2004) we lost them all, and scored 1 goal... in fact, this was the last time we scored twice against the Socceroos in a match of any kind, and the only victory over them since then was the Nations Cup Final at Mt Smart in 2002 when Nelsen sent us to France...

But anyway, this wasn't meant to be as depressing as all that sounds - hope you enjoy the match!

Morning all, another blast from the past:

Back in the 1980s, Olympic football had a different qualification formula - in short, it meant countries from outside Europe and South America could field their full international sides.  This meant that Olympic qualifiers like this one had "full cap" status.

So enjoy this solid victory over Japan, with Steve Sumner in fine fettle, and an 18 year old debutant coming off the bench...

great vid!

john adshead commentating only a few months after he took the team to the 1982 world cup

got me wondering, what were the circumstances around john adshead and kevin fallon leaving their posts as all whites coaches and alan jones taking over?

Apparently when they got back from Spain, Adshead and Fallon went to Charlie Dempsey, said, "this is what we have achieved, this is what we'd like to be paid", and Dempsey, with no hint of any negotation, told them to get lost. So they did. Absolutely criminal act from Steptoe.

More please...!
