My suggestion for the Fiji match would be Mt Smart - close proximity to the sizeable Indo-Fijian population in south Auckland and the Roskill area, near to motorways and on a train line... would generate a decent crowd, even if the Fijian support would probably outnumber Kiwis... and it would mean the media could dig out the 13-0 footage from 1981 and make actual stories about the upcoming fixture...

Why on earth would you give away a home game advantage by playing in a place that negates that? ( going on your reasoning )

They're already playing at North Harbour Stadium/QBE Stadium though for the first fixture. There would be an outrage if it were two successive Auckland fixtures.

I think they'll spread them around. Wouldn't be surprised if Christchurch got the Fiji game.

More South American qualifying games overnight. After 8 of 18 rounds Ecuador are in 5th spot but only 5 pts separate the top 7 sides, so still long way to go

Jaume, Jaume, Jaume  you really need to cheer up a bit ;-)

When we got Commebol as our playoff opponents (assuming we win Oceania) the World Cup in Russia became a pipe dream what we have to look at now is which team we could get for

1 - TV revenue that it will generate

2 - where would be a great away trip

3 - which top players would we get to see in NZ (for those that can't make the away trip)

My pick in order of preference would be

Argentina - never played them, it's a great country to visit, oh and MESSI

Brazil - played then 3 times yet to score so about time we did, oh and it's BRAZIL

Chile - decent team, played 6 times yet to win, decent sized Chilean community in NZ

Colombia - need revenge for 3-1 loss at 2003 Confed Cup, could get Coca-Cola to sponsor the game

Uruguay - similar country to NZ ie pop 4 mill, economy farming based, get to visit Buenos Aires on way to Montevideo

Venezuela - along with Boliva probably the only team in COMMEBOL we'd have a chance of beating, and I'd rather visit Venezuela

Paraguay - bit of meh, they made the 2011 Copa America final without winning a game, not exciting to watch

Peru - being Scottish I have a natural aversion to this country (think 1978 world cup) and Paddington Bear didn't really come from there

Bolivia - La Paz is only 451 meters less in height than Aoraki \ Mt Cook

Reid and Thomas maybe not as games in USA so not that far to travel

Smith is a no as he is having a back op and out for 3 months, Hudson wouldn't pick him anyway (quite rightly)

Stadiums confirmed.

November 12 v New Caledonia 3pm - QBE Stadium, Auckland
March 28 v Fiji - Westpac Stadium, Wellington
August/September window - OFC playoff (if the All Whites qualify) at QBE Stadium, Auckland
November 2017 Intercontinental Playoff (if the All Whites qualify) at Westpac Stadium, Wellington

There was considerable interest from stadiums around New Zealand to host the OFC Round Three Qualifiers, and the potential Intercontinental Playoff should the All Whites qualify

But still the 4 matches will be played in 2 stadiums only. That's odd

For totally selfish reasons I am stoked the Fiji game is in Welly.

Getting to see another All Whites game and hopefully Roy playing for his country, I'm pretty damn keen.

Thanks for that.

Does anyone know when the tickets go on sale? Because I assume for the inter-confederation playoffs both stadiums will sell out, so I'd like to get in early.

Tickets for the first two All Whites home fixtures will go on sale on October 12 through Ticketek, straight after the All Whites face the USA in Washington DC.

They probably wouldn't play in a town or city without an international airport for logistical reasons. Doesn't explain why not Chch though

Exactly as I predicted.  NZF have deal with North Harbour stadium and NZF know they can get big one off crowds there.

More South American qualifying games in last few days, and with 9 of 18 rounds done, we are exactly half way to finding AWs (if they quality out of Oceania) playoff opponent for next year.

Messi & Co (as if a reality check was needed!) are now in 5th spot on 16 pts, below Ecuador (3rd) and Colombia (4th) on GD.

8 pts separate the top 7 sides, but still long way to go

I really hope its Ecuador, Peru or Paraguay. I don't see the bottom 3 making a push for the play-offs and we will have zero chance of qualifying if we came up against Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil or Uruguay in my opinion.

The statement wasn't are they better than us or where they will finish, it was that no south american team is beatable. They are better than us but beatable. They won't finish fifth but that wasn't the assertion above.

Over two legs? With incredibly high stakes? I've seen stranger things but i really doubt we would beat them.

Classic overreaction to an ok performance against a poor, under strength Mexico in a freindly with nothing on the line.

You are being overly critical. That was a very good performance with respect to the context and background going in to the game. It was a massive jump forward with respect to how the team performed in the islands. It was more than an ok performance within that context and even as a stand alone performance it was a very good effort.

Leicester won the league over 38 games. If there's anything I've learned from that, it's that I know not nearly as much about football as I thought. 3 hours of football is all we're dealing with, rather than a 9 month league. We keep it within a goal away from home then anything's possible. Things become even more likely when we face a team that's not inside the top 15 teams in the world or so.

Permalink Permalink

My guess is - Chile, Argentina or Brazil no chance.  After those 3 teams there's a bit of a gap to the rest. So Aws then become some chance, if slim. In football upsets happen all the time.

The South American qualifying is 18 games long a real slog - but my take is that the best sides eventually rise to the top, ie. whilst there will be the odd upset like say a Brazil losing to Bolivia in La Paz, because the Brazilians can hardly breathe the air being so thin - the Bolivians then get thrashed 6-0 in Rio, so Brazil finish higher.

Hopefully this is the case for the AWs, ie 5th placed side is only the 5th best side in South America or worse.

No doubt there we be some last round drama in South America with a few teams vying for that 5th spot.

I remember last round of CONCACAF qualifying in 2013, and from memory Panama (apologies if was another Central American side) looked good for all money to grab the 4th spot, and qualifying playoff against AWs. I remember being excited about that prospect as rated AWs a good chance. Then gloom descended as Panama? choked, and perennial powerhouse Mexico somehow stole the 4th spot, in the last round. Strange shark happens.
