but how hard would it have been to avoid a clash and have it at 2.30pm? Isn't that a better time as well for Peru TV?

That league game will have high viewership bearing in mind the amount of Tongans who have jumped ship and the ill feeling.

Brilliant scheduling by NZF.

How many pubs will have the All Whites and how many the league?

Battle of the codes.

Will be fascinating to see the TV viewing figures...

Also the second leg falls outside the FIFA window which closes November 14 so they must have got permission from FIFA.

Football's much more popular than league these days so who cares, honestly. League fans will watch that and we'll watch this. Easy match for the NZ league team in a predictable sport and world cup (will Australia win, or will Australia win?) vs the best football match in New Zealand for the next 12 years at least, in a chance to go to the World Cup for a much more exciting and unpredictable sport. Easy pick to make if you ask me.

Such a narrow minded and bad response. We are likely to have another high quality inter-continental qualifier to look forward in 4 years time (just like we did 4 years ago, and 4 years before that) whilst we aren't likely to have another rugby league world cup in NZ for the next 12 years at least.

Also, easy match? Haha this is where I realised you were well uninformed because the Kiwis best player just defected from the side to join the Tongan team, as well as one of Australias top players. As well as this the Tongan side is stacked with NRL quality players indicating why they are being talked about as contenders for the whole tournament.

I also know plenty of people who would laugh at your claim of a more exciting sport. But yes league fans will watch that and we'll watch this, and it's your opinion but sorry what a terrible post...

Eh, I don't necessarily dislike league but in terms of the Rugby League World Cup, it's always the same end result so what's the point. Rugby League World Cups in New Zealand happen pretty often, so not exactly uncommon (6th time a RLWC has matches in NZ). The next RLWC in NZ will probably be in 2029, as not many countries give a damn about hosting it.

Meanwhile in football in 2021 we'll face the AFC team, so likely to not be as high quality a match as this one. In 2026 and from then on there will be 48 teams in the FIFA WC, so easy qualifications for us. Hard to envisage the next time such a high quality football match will occur in New Zealand.

Whereas the next time such an important rugby league match occurs in NZ involving NZ is 18 November 2017. Not exactly far away so not exactly as important a match as NZ vs Peru.

In rugby league it's only 3 countries that can win it (Tonga may have a decent team this year, but they won't win the whole thing; no chance), but in fact it's almost always the same country winning it.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. League fans will watch that and we'll watch this. For the NZ league team it's the most important match until the next week (wow, so important), whereas for football it's the most important match until June 2018 or November 2021.

I'm a sports nut, and so will watch almost anything (apart from mototorsport), however the Rugby League World Cup is a joke.  I'm sure many factors came into this 4.15pm kickoff spot for the Peru game, including input from FIFA. 95% of FIFA wouldn't even know rugby league exists.

Anyway should NZF be that concerned about the domestic (NZ) TV viewing audience? Their main concerns will be packing the stadium out (maximising gate revenue), achieving as big an overseas/Peru TV rights deal as possible, and getting all the flight logistics right so best chance for the AWs players to get to the away leg in okay shape, ie good recovery time.

A clash with the league game is not ideal, esp re grabbing attention of the casual NZ football follower - but yes league fans can watch their minnow international sport, and football fans the global game.

I guess a lot of us are in the same boat. Or plane. Or whatever.

I'm guessing NZF will push for the 10th - 11th, but doubtful Peru will agree.

There is no way it will be around the 10th /11th. They have to play the second leg, in Peru before the 14th.

It will be the 6th / 7th / 8th but that's not specific enough yet

It will sell out... but anything more than $80 would be harsh on the general public.

Based on the article I read this morning, winning is essential otherwise we can basically watch NZF senior football go into the wilderness apparently. Without that 10Mill we have no international program moving forward outside of Oceania.

Andy Martin wants us to fudge up the Peruvian team!

"Everyone laughs and jokes about the fact it will be uncomfortable for the team, it will be hostile, the hotel will be noisy and disruptive, all of those things we know happen in South America.

"So what we've got to think about is what can we do in New Zealand, as a country, to make sure this team know they're coming into a battle. It's not about welcoming them into New Zealand for a great experience and a football extravaganza, this is about them coming into our home, and we're going to make life as difficult for them as possible for them to perform.

Obviously we want that to be above board and we want everything to be done fairly, but I think we need the New Zealand public thinking 'yeah, it's a great spectacle, but it's the No 12 team in the world, they're coming into our place to beat us'."

It's that sort of dumb, arrogant attitude that will mean football will always struggle in this country.

It does matter!! It matters so much that every sports fan in NZ, regardless of where their true passions lies , has the opportunity of watching this match without clashes.

Heaven forbid a few may like the atmosphere they see and consider attending a Nix match.

This is a sport where in the Bahrain match that a player, Tim Brown had to actually start a marketing campaign to fill the stadium.

It may fill by itself this time, but what you are saying is that tv audience doesn't matter.  It matters so much

By the way Tonga have just as much chance of winning the World Cup then the kiwis this year. But of course you don't care about league so won't know that

After the first leg of their World Cup qualifier in Wellington next Saturday, the team will fly to Auckland on Sunday, then on to Buenos Aires, where they will transfer to a charter plane for the relatively short hop to Lima, the venue for the away leg. NZ Football chief executive Andy Martin said Air New Zealand had been superb in helping them get their travel sorted. "We scoured the world for charter planes to leave on Saturday night, and believe it or not, getting a charter plane out of New Zealand on a Saturday night at short notice isn't easy to do.

"Air New Zealand's board stepped up; John Key got involved, as a board member and an ambassador for football; they got right behind us.

"It's taken them three weeks of logistical changes to get the right crew in the right place, so they can put on a 777 instead of a Dreamliner for that flight [from Auckland to Buenos Aires].

"They've been amazing, so as soon as we get off that plane, we'll walk onto our own plane and finish the journey that way."

Martin said the trip to Peru had posed more challenges than any other All Whites match during his four years in charge, but he was convinced that his staff had everything under control.

It is not short notice.  NZF have known since the World Cup draw came out that they were going to need a flight to South America on or around Saturday 11th.  They should have had contingency plans drawn up months ago for the various opposition and been in constant contact with Air New Zealand or Qantas whittling down the options as teams were eliminated.

Surely they would rather fly in a 787 than a 777? 787's are way more quite and better oxygen saturation. It all helps.

Only 18 business class seats in a 789 compared with 44 in a 773 would be my guess.

But, you know, actually fair play to Key if he was able to help out. Appreciated. Don't mind his name in the paper for that. Nice to see NZ leaders acknowledging our football team. (His PR seeking progeny though...)

Nizhny Novgorod always struck me as a pretty ironic name for a city. Novyy means new and Gorod means city. So, it's new city - the ironic part is that it's about 800 years old.

There have been many rumors in Italy linking Gianluca Lapadula (owned by AC Milan, currently on loan to Genoa) playing for Peru and going to the WC - he has a Peruvian mother and has been approached by the Peruvian FA in the past.

Massive carrot for him right now with the WC only a few months away. He held out in the past but he is now faced with a difficult decision. Go with Peru now, or wait for the next Italian NT coach to be announced to find out where he sits within the team.

Bags of talent, but if I were him I'd go with Peru in a flash.
