So....is the black shirt the home shirt for the men now? I'm seeing it advertised as such.

I hope so, black is our colour and the AWs play better in it.

Case in point the Tunisia game.

I personally disagree, I'm somewhat attached to the All Whites identity.

I liked the look of our new white kit yesterday, other than it looked slightly ill-fitting on some of the players.
26 Mar 02:31
I agree that our kit should be white (or old school stripes), but that new one looks like an alternate for the Miami Dolphins...

The reason we have the teal accent is to match with the teal shorts that the Ferns wear. Can’t do black shorts because that could cause a colour clash.

Teal and silver have traditionally been NZ’s tertiary colours after black and white. Just look at Black Caps kits of the past, or outside of sport, Air NZ’s former branding.

Could go for a classic kiwi beige kit.

Here's a screenshot from the first ever World Cup qualifier in NZ - and that was at Newmarket Park :)  they'd changed to white shirts by then too...

Don't think it's the carpark, it's a space immediately behind the goal - parked behind the hoardings advertising booze and tobacco.  The 70s were a different time...

Unsure where to post this but I was really gassed about it! Stumbled upon this beaut in the Legends football museum in Madrid. World cup 82 shirt, nestled nicely in-between a Lothar Matthaus Germany shirt and Socrates Brazil shirt, all match worn. Couldn't believe they had an All Whites shirt on display in a museum full of shirts worn by Maradona, Pele, Messi, etc in WC finals. Proud Kiwi that day!

Have to say I love to see the white shirt is back to being the predominant shirt being used by our national teams.

I like the look of the warm up shirt 👕 any chance we know how access one.

Apparently Sportsfan in Dressmart Onehunga has a lot of Nike All Whites & Football Ferns stuff discounted down, poster says somethings over half off & can pick up a free poster if you ask for one.

Lovely.  Stick 1982 font numbers on it and make it the home kit.
You know we belong together...

I thought the AWs would be playing in these, much better than the current kit.

The current kit has grown on me.  The trims in “teal” - I’ve been calling it “Saudi 81” in remembrance of THAT win in teal/German green…

Here's a geek fact - those 81 shirts in Riyadh weren't teal, they were sky blue.  But the glare of the sun in Saudi made them look greenish on the coverage.  Much later in the game, as it changed from sunlight to stadium lights, they looked a lot more blue.

Milts, if anyone has this, you do; I've only ever seen the shirt as peppermint green. Is there a colour photo of the shirt, as it is meant to be?

I've heard it was essentially the German adidas away kit (hence the Wehrmacht green rumours)...this needs to be cleared up.

I was very young (most on here likely weren't even born!), but what an insane game of football it was.

Just want to point out these are hilites off my channel that NZF took without asking :P  Don't want to sound petty, but this footage doesn't exist anywhere else...  I don't own it, but made the effort with the edit etc... they post objections for stuff they don't want me showing, yet turn around and take stuff when it suits them... meh, I sound petty, I'll shut up now...

Hey Russ, it's in this pic (if the link works):

It was almost like training kit, but they wore it away in Fiji (when Fiji wore white) and then in Saudi again.

Ray Woolf - Mr Bic Lighters, himself.

It's amazing that the colour looks so different - so I'm assuming the shorts were a dark blue? (as they are dark green)

I should have paid more attention in Science, but asked ChatGPT;

1. The Role of Sunlight and Atmosphere
  • Sunlight is not just white light—it contains different wavelengths of light, and how they scatter affects color perception.
  • In bright, direct sunlight (like in Riyadh), shorter wavelengths (blue light) are scattered more than longer wavelengths (red and green).
  • This is why the sky appears blue—because blue light is scattered in all directions.
  • However, in certain conditions, blue light can mix with reflected green light from the environment (grass, sand, etc.), making things appear more greenish.
2. How Light Interacts with the Sky-Blue Kit
  • A sky-blue jersey reflects mostly blue wavelengths, but under strong yellowish sunlight, the color can shift.
  • Yellow light (from the sun) + blue fabric = greenish tint (since blue + yellow makes green in additive color mixing).
  • The human eye and cameras may perceive blue fabric under yellowish light as greenish.
3. How Video Cameras Misinterpret Colors
  • Older cameras use RGB (red, green, blue) sensors, but in harsh sunlight, they can overcompensate by boosting red and green while toning down blue.
  • If the camera overcorrects for the blue light, it may render blue objects as slightly greenish.
  • This is called color shift and was a common issue in analog TV broadcasts, especially before auto white balance technology was perfected.
4. The Dust and Heat Factor
  • The match was played in Riyadh, where the air likely contained dust particles.
  • Dust can scatter blue light even more aggressively, further altering the way it appears on camera.
  • Combined with the bright desert sun, this could have created a situation where the blue jerseys looked more greenish than usual.
5. Human Vision vs. Camera Vision
  • Our eyes naturally adjust to different lighting conditions better than cameras.
  • Cameras from the 1980s had fixed settings that couldn't adapt as well, leading to inaccurate color reproduction.
  • What looked sky blue in real life may have appeared teal or green on video because of these technical limitations.
Conclusion
The combination of sunlight, atmospheric effects, and old camera technology likely caused the sky-blue kit to appear greenish in footage from the 5-0 win against Saudi Arabia.

Does any footage of the 1981 match away to Fiji exist?
05 Apr 23:57
This kit has fascinated me over the years. Thanks for clearing things up Milts.

I also note the difference in blue shade between the tops and bottom half (shorts and socks). Any idea why? Arthur Egan's washing machine maybe?

Also, is that a black collar? Or dark blue?

Also also, what was our official and unused away kit at the World Cup Finals?

You're not the petty one here. It's just what they're like.

On a side note, I find it really disappointing that our national body has not preserved footage of national team and national league games. Really poor governance.

I also note that there are many peoople out there who house personal collections, that NZF are not willing to invest money in digitalising.

As far as I know, no.  The game was filmed on a single camera (I met the guy who TVNZ sent there to do it!) and it was shown (delayed) on TVNZ.  But the footage was not kept - there was no sign of it by the time they made the Road to Spain VHS hilites tape the next year.

The theory (from the cameraman) is that the film reels (the big old-fashioned ones) were not labelled/catalogued properly and ended up recycled or binned (can you imagine that happening if it was All Blacks footage...)

The only way that footage could still exist today would be if someone had owned a VHS recorder in 1981, had recorded that particular coverage off TVNZ (it was shown late night), and then still had that tape (or a digi version) to this day.  I've searched  a lot, but have never had any luck (including putting ads on the Hindi-language radio stations in Auckland, in case some Fijian fan was in Auckland back then).

The only game not on my doco, and it still annoys me!!! :p

09 Apr 02:14
It would have been the blue one, but was used for training instead.

Another geek fact - they had 2 different white strips in Spain.  One had pinstripes (only worn against USSR), while the 2 sets for Scotland and Brazil didn't.

Nearly as random as the Argentina second strips at Mexico 86 being bought from a Mexican sports shop because Maradona didn't like the official ones...

Alright team, I dug this out of storage... does anyone have any old and unwanted from 2010 or earlier they'd want to either show-off and share here, or be open to sell for cash?

Shirts, programmes, tickets, badges, memorabilia etc.
