Socceroos squad contains just 3 ALM players. Behich, Borrello & Redmayne.

Interesting that Yazbek (who seems a regular starter for Viking) will be involved in the window, but Bell not. I guess difference is Bell has only just recently moved back to Viking.

AWs/Socceroos - club rivalries
Greive - Baccus & Strain
Stamenic - Degenek (who's most been on the bench at Red Star lately)

Michael Woud's Ventforet Kofu play Mitch Duke's FC Machida Zelvia in the J2 this weekend.

Waine's Plymouth play Ipswich (Burgess & Luongo) & Middlesbrough (Silvera, Glover & McGree) in consecutive games post the Oct FIFA window.

In addition to the selected 23-man squad, Arnold will also bring three train-on players – Alex Robertson (Portsmouth FC), Mohamed Toure (Paris FC) and Patrick Yazbek (Viking FK) – into camp as part of their continued development through Football Australia’s elite pathway.

Lewis Miller is the only player to receive his first-ever call-up in this squad. The 23-year-old has impressed at right-back for Hibernian this season, scoring once and providing two assists in 12 matches across all competitions.

Miller joined Hibs in June 2022 following several years at Central Coast Mariners. He also appeared in every game for the Subway Olyroos at the AFC U-23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022™.

If AWs are close to full strength, and Socceroos more 2nd string, after their big game at Wembley - good chance of an AWs win.
Though even their 2nd string will be mostly experienced guys, starting week in week out, in leagues like the SPL & Championship.

A big number of the AWs are currently mostly on the bench with their clubs. They don't have anyone from the LOI, League Two or Danish 2nd tier either.

Its the stage of our footballing development to be fair, and unfortunately for us Australia are miles ahead in this respect as it stands.

In saying that though, when's the last time we could name a squad that didn't include A-League players?

We've also come a long way from the old 'Unattached FC' call-ups of yesteryear. It also wasn't that long ago that European based players were a rarity in NZ squads. Now look at us - It's not a glamourous bunch for sure, but we're getting there. Throw in a fit Ryan Thomas and Joe Bell down the line and that's got the makings of a quality AW's set up.

A good measurement of how far we have we come is the AWs lineup verus Socceroos in a corresponding friendly at Loftus Road, June 2005. The Socceroos with so many of their 'Golden Generation' that did so well at the Germany WC in 2006. A host of EPL players.

I know the AWs had a heap of players like Nelsen, Elliott, Vicelich etc unavailable. But this was their starting lineup. So yeah have come a long way.
And if that AWs team could nearly cause an upset (losing to a late Colosimo goal) then this one certainly can.

There's something at stake which always gives things a little bit more of an edge. Of course another exciting young team with some really good players when we played them a year or two ago, when we played them in Australia. (They) caused a lot of problems as well a good side, they've got some really talented players and obviously a centre forward that's playing here in the Premier League at the highest level.

So will be another tough test and a chance for us to, as you say, win something but continue on the path that we're on. So obviously one step at a time, but it's a great window for us to be here and be a part of two exciting games.

One in a million

What sort of side do people want to see for Australia? For me:

Crocombe
Kirwan Boxall Smith Cacace
Garbett Stamenic McCowatt
Singh Champness
Wood

But I expect Pijnaker will probably start again.

Also wouldn't mind seeing how Tuiloma does at DM. He's a decent player just not a very good CB in my opinion and without having seen him play much RB I don't know if I would expect him to be a natural fit there either.

I'm likely an outlier but I wouldn't mind Mata starting upfront alongside Wood. I was at the AWs verus Socceroos game in Brissy last year. Wood made life a bit hell for Sainsbury & Degenek that night. Helped I reckon that he had ADJ alongside him, who also has a bit of size.

The giant Souttar and new guy Cameron Burgess (also UK born) were the Aussie's CBs against England. They had Rowles playing LB. Degenek is also in their squad.

As I think Carlind said Champness looks threatening but he gives the ball away alot. I watched the Congo replay and 50% of the time yes he lost the ball in his cameo. But for sure some other times he did some nice one twos, and caused the Congolese a few nerves. Just think against better fresh defences him turning over the ball constantly, will frustrate no end. Better off the bench when defenders tire.

I think I’d have Singh deeper and McCowatt further forward. Our goal scorers have been Wood and McCowatt for the AWs and for their club. Singh will likely never play as a sole forward and has never been a golden boot.

If Champness doesn’t start, then Just does. Or Waine playing wider.

Wood, Garbett, Singh and McCowatt are our most likely goal scorers. And Waine if he starts, but I’d prefer him out wider, rather than drifting into where those 4 might be operating.

Tuiloma is an outside goal scoring prospect from set pieces, so might start at RB.

Wonder who drops out when Bell’s back.

maybe no one. His form for club and country hasn't been so sharp of late. I like the idea of no one, not even Wood, being guaranteed a starting spot.

So with the Soccer Ashes trophy to be played for and with Australia the current holders (from 1954) then I take it is a 90-minute game only and if it's a draw then Australia retain it?
No extra-time or penalties?
Good to see game will be live on Duke freeview tv too.

This time around the venue will be that of another English Premier League club, Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, with a penalty shootout in the offing to decide who claims the Ashes if the scores are level after 90 minutes. The trophy has not made the trip to London in recognition of its irreplaceable significance and fragile nature.

Yep, had been at Stoke and was last at Ipswich, but that was a few weeks ago now. He was named in the Eastern Suburbs NL squad before that kicked off, so I guess that's the fallback option taken care of I guess.

Note Boxall's Minnesota (11th in the West, 41 pts) have a high stakes must win MLS game against Sporting Kansas (10th, 41 pts) this weekend. Last game of the regular season. Winner likely makes the playoffs (top 9 teams), season over for the loser. Playoff 6 pointer. Combined with the UK-US travel factor, wouldn't surprise to see 35 yrs young Boxy on limited mins verus the Socceroos.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/nz-teams/133127509/all-whites-after-rare-goals-against-socceroos-as-rivalry-resumes-in-london

Australia will be favourites to win in front of an expected 7000-strong crowd, even if coach Graham Arnold is planning on making a raft of changes to the team that lost 1-0 to England at Wembley Stadium last Friday, stating: “It’s my last chance to look at some players”.

World Cup qualifying starts for the Socceroos next month and will continue until at least September 2025, which means the winner of the Ashes will hold on to them for at least two years. They also have the next edition of the Asia Cup in January to get ready for as well.

Max Crocombe is expected to start in goal ahead of Nik Tzanev, having remained with his English League One club Burton Albion to play in their match at the weekend, so as not to give rival glovesman Jamal Blackman a chance to stake a claim.

Matt Garbett was used off the bench against DR Congo, having only recently returned from an ankle injury, but could come into the starting XI against Australia, likely in place of Callum McCowatt, who might then move forward, with Ben Waine the incumbent in the front three most likely to drop out.

The other questions would be whether Bazeley brings in defender Bill Tuiloma, then whether he does so at right back, in place of Niko Kirwan, or at centre back, with one of Michael Boxall or Nando Pijnaker dropping out.

Is this some weird power play from Baze, leaving Crocombe out? If you want to pick and choose which games in a window you play in, you won't play in any?

Without Max and Sarpreet any chance we had is gone.
