I hope Baze seriously looks at it, because it is great to try and find a formation and setup that enables you to get your best XI on the pitch. It is also really important in international football to be rock solid at the back, and as good as Cacace is, nobody would say that defending is the strongest part of his game. de Vries is solid defensively, has a great cross and dead ball delivery, and is no slouch supporting a LW on attack too.

The biggest question in our squad has always been who supports Wood and Singh in the front third, because they're so much better than the other attacking options we have available and nobody has really made those positions theirs. Garbett has been good for us but is still so young and it isn't clear what his best position. Just too, but he hasn't impressed much at decent levels of club football. McCowatt has been OK and not amazing. Old has been an exciting possibility recently but he didnt impress in the few chances he got in a white shirt. It may turn out that it is better to play Old deeper in central midfield than LW too.

I think instead of a 4-2-3-1 we could look at a 4-3-3. Cacace with Singh and Wood up front, and the likes of Old, Garbett, McCowatt and Stamenic as more attacking players can be considered for the midfield 3 alongside the defensively solid Bell and Rufer.

Edit: such a system would perhaps ask a lot of Payne/Roux to add attacking impetus wide on the right to enable Singh to stay more centrally, but that might always be the case as we don't have a really high level RW. Kosta could have been it but has never delivered in white and is on his last legs, probably couldn't be expected to be in the starting team in 2026 at his age.

I proposed this Cacace move about a year ago, and got ripped apart on here haha.

I agree he's a bit "wasted" in D. And really his best asset is cutting in and attacking the goal.

Odd that no one has mentioned Kirwan. I'd take him over one of Roux or Payne.

I would be really surprised if Garbett doesn't start, regardless of his lack of minutes. Baze likes him and he had an absolute glorious spell in the previous couple intl windows. He also brings a workrate and physicality/speed combo that I don't think anyone else in midfield/attack really has, and it seems to work pretty well against the island teams.

As for Libby starting at left wing, I rate it and I think Baze can't ignore his form playing higher up. Fiji's fullbacks would have a torrid time dealing with him, especially if he's overlapped by De Vries to whip in a pinpoint cross.

Yeah I like and rate Kirwan but serie c is just below A-league level (info based on league ratings around d the world) but if they get promoted to serie B and he’s getting regular game time like now, then there is a very strong case for him to be involved in the World Cup squad should we make it….. obviously just my opinion I’m not a selector and others I’m sure will have differing views, as for who would miss I guess it’s who eve has the worse season between Roux or Payne

Tzanev must be in the conversation too. Starting week in week out in the same comp as Max but at a side doing better.

Yeah I’d say max and Nik are our 1 and 2 1st choice keepers and Alex currently 3rd choice with others nipping at his heels. Seems to be the way we always seem to have a few keepers putting there hands up, I hope paulsen either gets loaned to a decent English league next season or even better gets some prem time Bournemouth

As Sims will be if he gets the starters role at GAIS when the new Swedish season starts in March. He would arguably be then playing  at the highest level of any current Kiwi GK

Paulsen is by far the most talented New Zealand goalkeeper right now. Bar none. Having him third choice is a travesty

It does amuse me how the A league’s level over time has now moved from the quality of lower championship/upper league one to now bottom league one/upper league two.

Irrespective on the thoughts of the league, Alex should definitely be our number one.

All Whites midfield will be very under done- Garbett, Stamenic not playing. Rufer ill, Bell playing friendlies. Singh not in recent squad for some reason.

Not a massive concern now but the guys need minutes leading into 2026.

So if 2 or 3 of those lads not available where do we go next? Howieson and Roa conchie seem obvious, both local and getting game time though howieson not regular starts. 12 to 18 months ago youd have said Dibley Dias but he has faded. Ryan Thomas not a realistic option either

Mid is definitely a worry with so many injury prone or not playing, I wouldn’t write Thomas off he’s fit enough to make there bench and is getting some minutes if not as often as we would like. For this window if we need extras you hit it right with either Conchie or howison but if we qualify there may be a few unknowns to us that nzf is in contact with that declare for us, CB jack Irdale is an example of someone eligible for nz who just hasn’t declared. And playing in a World Cup is a huge draw card

I'd love Thomas to return but his seeming fragility makes it a wish rather than reality to me, much as i'd love to see Rojas back, but....

Thomas maybe joins up with the All Whites for a friendly in Europe, if he doesn't get injured between now and that happening (spoiler alert, he will get injured between now and that happening). He's certainly not coming to NZ next month.

We will pick the strongest side possible this window. Confirm the WC spot first, then take the next window to look at some future options for depth.

18 months is a long time in footy,  I'd worry more about form and minutes then.

So what we are saying is... picking the strongest squad might not be the same as picking based on form/mins. But that's where we are at with our team and depth, we still pick based on a players rep/history.

The March window is always a little tricky, as there is a number of AWs that play in 'summer' leagues that run Calendar year starting around March.

Bell, Boxall, Surman, Tuiloma. Previously Pijnaker in LOI & Rogerson in Finland.
Fringe candidates - Greive, Kyle Adams & Kees Sims.

Others like Just, McCowatt & Wilkins coming off long mid winter breaks.

Throw in Stamenic, Garbett, Waine and maybe Singh not playing alot recently and yeah will be a few guys for OFC semi & final, without a lot of recent football. If we were playing tougher teams you's be concerned, but it's only amateur Fiji, and then NC or Tahiti.

I think Fiji are the weakest of those 3 teams, and for the final (NC or Tahiti) the AWs should be less rusty, after 90 mins together in the semi, plus extra training sessions.

What aisles will be 'White Noise' for the Fiji game?

Asking for someone based in Europe, looking to come back to NZ for both games. Cheers

I've bought a white noise ticket that I can't use for this one, you're welcome to take it off my hands

Not because there is any doubt about Serie A star Liberato Cacace’s place in the side, but because the crossing and set-piece ability of Francis de Vries for Auckland FC has raised the prospect of the duo combining down the left flank.

Scoring goals in matches against the types of teams they are hoping to face at the World Cup remains the biggest area of concern for the All Whites and de Vries’ deliveries appeal as a possible solution.

As de Vries has made an impact for Auckland, Cacace has been deployed further forward at times by his Italian club, Empoli, so could that happen in international football too?

It’s unlikely to be tested against Fiji, or in the qualifying final against New Caledonia or Tahiti in Auckland that will follow with a win, but Bazeley is open to it moving forward.

“Libby has moved around positionally and has shown himself to be pretty effective in a more forward position, so I would never rule out the chance that the pair of them could be on the pitch at the same time.”

Rogerson must be a very good chance to start vs Fiji now. Baze very strongly indicating Cacace won't be tried on the wing in March in his recent conversation with Voerman, Old probably not fit, Garbett isn't playing, Just & McCowatt will have barely played any competitive minutes this year before the window.

Edit: and Payne with an utter shocker today. Should be Roux starting too.

Rojas himself has heavily played down the prospect of making the March squad, and indicated he wanted to use the time off to continue to push towards full fitness. I wouldn't bet on it.
