"We the fans deserve better" ??????? We won. Do you want to look bad and win or look good and lose?

I won't dispute we were crap, but if we win our next 3 games in the exact same manner, thats Rio 2014. At this point in time, results are all that matter. Yes there is the wider of issue how we play against better opponents but I actually don't give a shit, as long as we win. Getting back there is all that counts and if we look pretty and lose to the concacaf side, you won't be sitting here going 'well at least we looked good'... You'll be whinging that we lost.

Results are all that matter and we got the result.

What's wrong with looking good and winning Jeff? Or is that not an option? I think it is. I'm sick and tired of football in this country being seen as second rate. I get pissed off when people constantly decry the state of the local game. I get even more pissed off when I travel away to watch a bunch of decent players put in a poor performance when we all know they are better than that. Let's play with arrogance, swagger and panache or at least bloody well try. And yes I would take a well played, hard fought loss in the Concacaf play off over a jammy win because at least then I would still have hope. If we can't defeat the island nations convincingly with 4 times their budget and 10 times their playing pool then we may as well sack every development coach, close every academy, mothball the Whole of Football plan and sign our kids up for rugby. When we have more attacking talent at our disposal than since the days of Rufer, Woodin et al, why do we then go out and play hoof ball? This "play not to lose" approach has become our default setting and it doesn't need to be like that. In the small sided games both teams engaged in before the game started I watched both teams and we were equally as good as NC in the tight 1 & 2 touch stuff and it gave a real sense of excitement to see some of what McGlinchey, Rojas etc could do. But you would have no idea of that once the game started, whereas NC carried that style into the game. Basically those who had been actively driving the 5 aside drill became excluded as the punters took over. So disappointing!

Exactly - such low expectations.  And such fatalism from some on here! It does't have to be like this - is the NC midfield more talented than a Payne, Keat, McGlinchey combination?  Of course not.  So why can they play a passing style and we can't?  We played a passing style at the olympics and got results - last time I checked all of those players were eligible for the seniors other than Ryan. This isn't about unrealistic expectations, it's about making the most of the talent we have and moving forward

I think we can play a passing style. But is that the right way to play NC?To give you the best chance to win.

Can we out pass a team from CONCACAF?I don't think so.Sadly we probably have to play accurate hoofball to have the best chance.

Right idea....wrong coach!

This is the guy who watched Killen failing as a midfielder in Honiara and deciding....I will try him there again!

And that's my point. As everyone has said, in the middle, we are far superior so why did we not use them. The answer is tactics and the coach.

I'm a Ricki fan but I believe he is past his use by date. Those are the tactics we generally get with him so it's going to be ugly wins. Until there is a coaching change, it wont be any other way. When you realise that, results are all that matter.

I want someone to tell me otherwise but look at Ricki and how he coaches and that's pretty much how it is.

Was it Ricki dictating the long ball or was it player based tactics to suit player field positions, only those in the dressing room know.

Forgot - how was the ball played by NC to get their goal

Maybe Ricki thinks the Honiera tactics and formation will work, he just has to force them a little more.

Everyone was miked up. That would imply that the lino did not see it either. It does look like the ref is looking through bodies but I don't think it's that hard a miss. He lost control at the Wood tackle and was flustered from there out. I mean to see a player with his head open and bleeding and just not care, then casually saunter back to check the obvious is the sign of a man off his game and unfocused. I think he bottled it when the pressure went on to make the big decisions and the 1st big one where he need it step up, was the Wood tackle that he had perfect position on. I think had he gotten that one right, the rest would have gone fine for him.

My thoughts are that he actually lost it before the Wood incident JV. I really feel if he had of issued yellow cards for some of the Niggly challenges that went on earlier in the match things may not have escalted, such as the First half up ending of Bertos, the early part of the second half where Reid was shadowing call over sideline and was blatantly kicked in the calf from behind, and even down to the NCL goalscorer not being booked for taking his shirt off.
I was happy when Stebre was appointed, but think he made a mess of the match.

'Played well' and 'got results' are two different things. I agree, we played very well, it was very impressive watching a NZ pass the ball around successfully.

But by 'got results' you imply that we got more than one. We didn't, we only earned a single point in the tournament.

The striker was booked for that, but you are right he didn't control the game in a manner befitting an international class referee at all.

By his own admission Strebre didn't have his best game and he said as much to the All Whites after the match.

Via a solitary goal in three games.
I was at the Belarus game and while the style may have been better than our performance against NC (which I never saw) it is pretty hard to say we played fantastic football.

I endorse your point of view sir. The early cards not issued did not help.

Oman and Jordan have slightly better resources at their disposal than New Caledonia..
Though, in saying that, Australia & Japan have more resources than us too so I suppose it's all relative.

Oman are ranked 105th.

I'd say they are very comparable.

Yep, i reckon most people would be surprised at how well these guys would do if they had more money to travel overseas and play more friendlies. Thats the biggest barrier holding them back.

Indeed. It doesn't care about how well teams play, it only cares about results. So if Moldova play really well against their European qualifying opponents but dont win any games, they wont pick up and ranking points are won't go up the rankings. But NC have been winning their games in their qualifiers, even though they are probably playing worse football than Moldova are, and are picking up ranking points.

It would be very hard to have a ranking system like this based on the subjective comparison of how good teams are at playing football, therefore the current system is the best we have.

Exactly.

The point is simply that sometimes the underdog can have a good day. That's football. NZ is not unique in having experienced this. We should be happy we won.

I think its more for the top teams. It becomes a joke of a system below a certain point. Maybe if you scaled different federations ranking points, but a subjective ranking system is also a bit of a joke.

Allegedly
