I note is a different stadium for this game (Education City Stadium), compared to where they will play Costa Rica (Ahmad bin Ali Stadium).

I'm guessing a starting lineup something like the below. Change of shape from Peru game, just based on abundance of forwards in the squad, as opposed to other positions.

Marinovic
de Vries, M Boxall, Pijnaker, Payne
Stamenic, Lewis, Rojas
Just, Waine, Rogerson

Reserves to come on for major minutes - Ingham, Bell, Champness, Kosta & McCowatt.
20 min cameos - everyone else except Tuiloma & Smith.

de Vries and/or Payne may slide across to CB slots, given Tuiloma & Smith sound unlikely to play and Reid won't get major minutes (if any) I imagine.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/128903377/all-whites-set-for-final-warmup-match-before-world-cup-playoff-centre-backs-manage-knocks

The lineup, substitutions, and scores will be made available, but it will be the first All Whites match with caps handed out not to be broadcast live since their 0-0 draw away to Trinidad and Tobago in October 2013.

Speaking on Wednesday morning in Doha, Hay said two of his starting centre backs against Peru had come away from the Peru match with minor issues to manage.

"We're carrying a couple of little knocks, but that's all it is.

“As you will have seen against Peru, Bill Tuiloma came off and that was more precautionary. He didn't train yesterday – just a slight groin strain.

Tommy Smith had a classic charley [leg cramp], so he participated probably in about 50% of the training yesterday

Marco seems to look very happy in all the photos we see of him, hopefully that translates to him playing with freedom and confidence when we see him on the pitch.

Formation change to 4 at the back not unexpected, given so many forwards in the squad. Tuiloma and Stamenic the only starters from Peru. Stamenic the sole DM. Half game each him & Lewis?
Boxall and BT in a shoot out for that right sided CB role against CR?

Very attacking side. And expect Rogerson and Champness to also get minutes, off the bench. But looks likely those 2 plus Ingham will drop out of 26, when squad is cut to 23.

Just & McCowatt in midfield?  Barba & Rojas as the wingers either side of Waine?

Bell, Garbett, Reid & Cacace not listed in match day squad.

Won't be an easy game if Oman are at full strength. They beat Japan away in AFC WC qualifying. They only finished 1 point behind the Socceroos (3rd) in their pool, in 4th spot. Oman's FIFA ranking 75. UAE who pushed Socceroos hard this week pretty similar at 68.

I read this game counts for caps, because it's behind closed doors does it still count for FIFA rankings? Other than no one allowed to watch it's the same as any other international?

If (if) Oman are at full strength they ain't that weak. FIFA ranked 26 spots higher than AWs. Finished anly a point behind Socceroos in AFC qualifying. Beat Japan in Tokyo. If they are at full strength or close to, they'd be favoured against NZ 'B'.

Rogerson & Champness have only just been subbed on.

Looks like Stamenic & Boxall getting full games. Might indicate they are both on the bench against Costa Rica in 5 days.

Compared to Peru they are much weaker being only 26 sports above AW's, in theory you'd expect Rojas to be dominating and goals being scored - he is in the form of his life and if some are to be believed the best winger we have.

A draw vs Oman isn't the worst result, but scoring no goals in 2 matches, and our only goal vs non Oceania opposition this year a pen (in the 3-1 loss to Jordan) isn't overly confidence inspiring. If we do beat CR you'd have to expect it will be 1-0. CR scores early and we are in big trouble.

Not good tbh. We need to be scoring goals, as simple as that. I haven't seen us put any open play goals away in a while.

Well you could hardly have a more attacking midfield/forward line than Just, McCowatt, Rojas, Barba & Waine all starting together. 4 at the back. I guess the setup ain't everything.

If it takes 1 goal to get to Qatar (again), that will do.

Agree that two games without scoring  a goal is a worry. It's not like anyone saw the game. They could have just lied and said we ran away with it 3 nil just to boost fan confidence. If a tree falls in the forest with nobody to hear ut does it make a sound etc....

Hard to know. Same Pijnaker.

But I'd say good signs for Lewis & Tuiloma that Stamenic & Boxall played 90 mins - don't think you want your starters against the Ticos, playing full games only 5 days prior.

If Hay thinks he's going well and hoping to score a quick break away goal against the run of play, he is fooling only himself. It will take any opposition 30 seconds to figure this out if they have seen our recent games.

I don't see Rojas working hard enough to press when we don't have the ball. They have some excellent technical players, esp in midfield. Give them too much space they will pick us apart. It's where Garbett was excellent, and Greive runs his arse off plus he offers more than just that.

Need to work as a unit to shut them down. Apparently the Peruvians didn't like it, and not so common the aggressive press in Latino football?? Others will know better than me.

But yeah without seeing this Oman game, we are all running a bit blind (as will the Costa Ricans) as to Hay's starting 11.

Bit late to this party but tbh think it'll be pretty harsh if Marinovic is dropped (if that is indeed what happens). Don't get me wrong I like Oli and think he'll be our No. 1 for the next WC cycle. But he has 3 caps - 2 against OFC nations in an empty stadium. Bit of a step up in intensity & pressure playing the likes of Peru and CRC compared to that & ALM. Unfortunately I think that showed on Monday.

Stef has played numerous high pressure games with NZ and I honestly can't remember a critical mistake he's made. Surely you'd want someone like that in goal for a one-off playoff.

Obv we watch Oli week in in the A League and he's in super form. Hard to compare to Stef playing in Israel which we just don't see. You'd hope Hay has watched some footage and I guess he gets to see them both square up in training. Just think it's a bit harsh to be dropped on his national team form.

Other than that - based on the last 2 results looks like we are going to be tough to beat which is a plus. But hard to see where the goals are coming from at this point.

Really hope Hay plays Wood with a bit of support - otherwise he'll just be easily marked out of the game.

Hay said that he was leaning on Jonathan Gould a very large amount, when who to pick between Sail & Marinovic.

Reading between the lines it seemed that Sail's huge confidence & self belief was giving him an edge. Whilst big Stef maybe a bit down after a season in Israel playing for a poor team and getting relegated. And to be fair Marinovic has never outwardly at least, given off big confidence vibes.

He's also poorer with the ball at his feet than Sail, and looking at the Peru game, the AWs want the keeper to come out of the box in need. Sure Sail made one howler but next time he'll bang that into row Z.

Anyway sounds like J Gould is the boss in this instance.

Pretty disappointed with that result tbh regardless of the rotated lineup, obviously if we win on Wednesday this result means nothing, but if we don’t then it’s probably symptomatic of the same issues, like even Hudson beat Oman (7 years ago, but still). So in 4 games against teams that didn’t get knocked out of World Cup qualifying in the early stages we have 0 wins and only one goal. 1-3 loss to Ireland, 0-1 loss to Lithuania, 0-1 loss to Peru and 0-0 draw vs Oman. That’s an Ireland side dead last in UNL League B and a Lithuania dead last in League C. Add to that a 1-3 loss in January to a Jordan side who didn’t make the final round of Asian qualifying with the only goal being a penalty. Even versus defensive island sides we struggled to break them down, relying on late goals to get 1-0 wins. This Costa Rica side will be like that, except replace part time fishermen, policemen and teachers with a top 15 goalkeeper in the world. Where are the goals coming from? I hope they’re practicing their penalties a lot, especially considering a lot of the players there have lost 2/2 shootouts.

I also find it pretty tinpot that we have full international-capped games not being broadcast at all; maybe I expect too much but it is 2022. Like, I get the argument will be “we don’t want to show Costa Rica any more insight”, but what would they really gain? If that’s the thought process, you need to hide all footage, not just one last game. They’ll be able to watch every game back to the start of Hay’s tenure, I doubt the secret weapon or tactical innovation has been hidden until this game. The Peru game was our likely starting 11 in the likely formation, so if any game you’d want to hide, it was that one. Surely the Qataris would be champing at the bit to show off their brand new stadium. In the end it looks like we didn’t miss out on anything, but hardly by design.

We need a high level RW, hopefully Just can take the step up. Could play Singh as an AM in a midfield three and swap Garbett for Greive in a striking pair with Wood, risks Wood getting pushed wide like has happened when we play a striking pair though.

for good reason, he promises so much and yet fails to deliver any energy or work when playing for the AW's, it's almost like he doesnt care about the international game.

High praise for Rojas from Narelle. No mention of her BF, who may now be kept on the bench by Stamenic, reading her comments.

And re the lack of goals. It's been a problem against any non OFC team when Singh has been unavailable. He's a unique player by NZ Football standards, and unfortunately is no one else like him or near his level in that role. We beat Curacao, Bahrain and The Gambia (all around Oman's level), scoring 5 goals with him in the team. He's a huge loss.

Hay started Just, McCowatt, Rojas, Barba and Waine altogether today, and still no goals. Sounds like the blame laid with some wasteful finishing, rather than any overly defensive setup.

Hopefully the Woodsman is saving a banger for next week, and that's enough for the win. I also see  Libby as a major threat to create something or score even.

The All Whites created the majority of the goal-scoring chances against a highly physical Oman side but lacked the finishing quality they'll need against the Costa Rican defence next week.

New Zealand dominated possession through the first half, before Oman pulled back some of that momentum in the second half, and the ongoing struggle to convert opportunities will be of concern to coach Danny Hay.

In his first outing for the All Whites since 2019, A-League star Marco Rojas was outstanding, providing an attacking boost which will be critical against the Central Americans.

He created the best opportunity on goal of the match but took one touch too many and couldn't get his shot on target.

Kosta Barbarouses couldn't convert another golden chance to score, trying to chip the Oman goalkepper on the volley, only to send his shot over the crossbar.

Marko Stamenic and Michael Boxall were also impressive for the All Whites, while Ben Waine was at his industrious best - receiving plenty of advice from the sidelines from captain Chris Wood, who made a late appearance.

Hay said the match had helped him confirm his starting XI to face Costa Rica, which he'd now settled on, singling out midfelder Stamenic for particular praise.

"The focus has always been on Costa Rica. This was just an opportunity to get minutes into several players' legs and for them to have an opportunity to force their way into the starting XI," Hay told Newshub after the game.

"I thought there were some really good performances from the likes of Marko Stamenic after, by his standards, a disappointing 45 against Peru. Excellent to see him go well.

"We've got three or four sessions now ahead of Costa Rica so we'll make the most of every single one of those."
