i actually think australia is a good side that has learnt how to be very effective and competitive at international level. they may struggle this year at the WC but i think their dip, if there is one, will be relativley shortlived. they are producing a steady flow of decent players that will ensure they continue to qualify for world cups, are successful at Asian cups - and from time to time they will do better than that depending on draw, luck and mix of players at the time.

but certainly some (and only some, usually the Eurocentric football snob types) of their fans have an attitude. rather than just accept the obvious, that it was a tightly contested game the other night that they were probably lucky to win, they rattle out all kids of excuses - didnt have best XI, werent taking it seriously tra la tra la. well, you got to play at home, we should have been playing against 10 men if not 9, we missed the better chances, we won the first half before the game degenerated with all the subs. im not suggesting for a moment we are a "better" side than Australia. but we are a handy enough side to make life difficult for them if we are well organised and play to our strengths. that's what happened the other night.

still wishing aussies well in SA, but getting more difficult thanks to some of these clowns

[QUOTE=james dean]

It's quite amusing how quickly Australia and its fans have gone from being starry eyed newbies just happy to be on the world stage mixing it with the best (like we are) to patronising c0cks who seem to have forgotten the last 30 years, and their humility with it.

okay, my childish windups aside, this is f**king rubbish. australia is still as modest as it was four years ago in football, but when it comes to you kiwis talking us down and yourselves up after a half arsed friendly match, we willl (or at least I will) patronise. the sh*t talked in here about your own chances in your group match the sh*t i've been talking in here today. the reality is you scraped past bahrain to qualify, and only qualified after oceania was rewarded for Australia's efforts.
we had to work twice as hard to qualify in '06 and '10, and you'll soon learn that the WC isn't as easy as a friendly game against an uninspired socceroos side or a 2 legger against Bahrain.
ATB

well we were supposed to get humped by bahrain (bc you guys found it hard to beat them) and we were meant to get humped by you.  so just maybe we like to entertain a little bit of fantasy for SA.

and dont forget your history. you had your own chance to beat an Asian team in a home and away play-off to qualify. remember ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pziKluqYnd4

you are awesome and rich and good at everything and have qualified 3 times. we are poor and pathetic and overly-sensitive and cant play football and have qualified twice.

Thanks for giving us a great example of the type of patronising attitude I'm talking about.  Quite simply there is no way we would have heard anything like this before 2006.

4 years ago Australia hadn't been to a world cup in 28 years.  Now you suddenly feel qualified to (a) tell your opposition that matches you clearly competed in don't matter (b) downplay other sides qualification efforts (c) speak from a position of "experience" as to how tough a world Cup is.

Why do I feel qualified to speak on this topic/  Because I am half australian, my father is an aussie football tragic who was crying like a child when Australia qualified in 2006 and is embarassed when I tell him some of the rubbish that is spoken by Australian football fans.

Perhaps you should think back to before the 2007 Asian Cup and what was being written in the Aussie media before you go spouting off about how much of a world force australia is now.

Aussie football has made great strides in the last 8 years off the back of a very talented group of players.  Don't assume that's how it will always be, because there are no Kewells, Vidukas, Cahills or Neills coming through

In his defence that is probably the first time he's heard of that.  He probably thinks Australia magically started playing football in 2005.

Maybe if we ignore Melbournite he will go away..... All of the Aussies I met over in Melbourne were fantastic... full of hospitality as gving it as much as they got from us..... but then all that I talked to after the game were humble and admitted the fact that they were very lucky to:
a) have a full complement of players at the end.
b) won the match.

On two side notes:
a) It was great to meet up with all the Yellow Fever/White Noise guys
b) It totally messes with my head that 3 days earlier a club game of footy (AFL) gets just under 90k crowd and an international footbal match only gets just over 55k (probably giving more ammo to the it does not matter crew)

Melbournite.. firstly, you had me when you admitted to "my childish windups"....
then you admitted... I will)patronise.
and you also admit..the sh*t I've been talking in here today.

In your own words then, you've admitted to.. childish windups, patronising and talking sh*t...hardly an invitation to take you seriously.

We know the Australian history in qualifying, and thanks, NZ and the NZ team doesn't need your advice about tough WC qualifying.
For the record, most of us on here have a realistic view of New Zealand's chances in SA. We also have a realistic view of Australia's chances.
Both teams will play with passion and commitment and proudly represent their country... just the way they did on Monday night, right?

ok. Wind ups aside and lets be honest.
" australia is still as modest as it was four years ago in football"  rubbish. Australians are arrogant they always have been. Have you forgotten that your ONLY world cup win was against another Asian team? You were in the weakest group thats ever been in a world cup and you qualified from it.  Good on you.

"when it comes to you kiwis talking us down and yourselves up after..."
well no not really. Yep we have talked our selves up a bit - but seriously we just outplayed the #20 team in the world on their own patch...I think we are entitled to feel a bit more confident about things. As for talking you lot down...two points - (1) under Pim Verbeek you lot have been absolutely dire Your players are better than he allows them to be but as a team they are awful. You know this. (2) By far the most talking down about the Sheilaroos is the awful assaults on our players. You know how bad it was you cant defend it. Had Cahill been crocked  you lot would have been screaming blue murder.

the reality is you scraped past
bahrain to qualify  That would be a Bahrain that you only scored in the last minute to beat in Bahrain and won by just 2 goals in Australia. You obviously missed our games where we had a perfectly good goal disallowed over there and could have won by 4 in Wellington. Further we qualified via a route that Australia failed to qualify through. Guess hat makes us a better team than your 1997 heroes eh?
we had to work twice as hard to qualify in '06 and '10  Rubbish. You played more games yes but you qualified from a group that we would have qualified from - as we proved by beating Bahrain.

The bottom line is you and your arrogant countrymen were surprised at how well we played. There is no doubt who the better team on the night was. Without the THREE Australian officials and the inept ref, you would have had 2 players at least sent off.

How do you think you would have gone playing the 2nd half with 9 men and a goal down?

Moving on for a moment... another classic from Chris Rattue in the Herald:

I don't want to say anything negative, but... we lost on Monday, Tim Brown's career is over, our team is sh*t, if you don't score from all your chances you're hopeless and should go home, Ricki doesn't know what he's doing, but everyone's so happy I'd hate to bring anyone down. I'm not bringing you down, am I?

i dont mind when rattue sticks to telling us how brown's injury is progressing or what the starting line up is or what the mood in the camp's like, but when he starts expressing opinions on players and performance, it really makes you cringe. unfortunately, it seems the ego in him wont accept that he's really not at all qualified to comment on such things.

As far as I can tell, Rattue just looks for people who do know something about soccer and tries to get them to say something sufficiently "juicy". And as we all know there are enough Ricki-bashers and armchair coaches out there who want their say. Rattue now seems peeved that most of them are smart enough to keep their mouths shut.

Is Rattue really arguing that Ricki should have been playing Mulligan, Christie, Barron etc in all the warmup games just in case Brown (or Elliot) got injured? Wasn't he saying last week that if we're not putting our strongest team on the field at all times we're not trying, or was that someone else?

ETA: I'm glad Rattue hasn't found this forum yet, because he would no doubt jump on the BRING BACK OUGHTON bandwagon as soon as he found out that Duncs exists. Doloras2010-05-27 09:36:49

Spot on - most here would go crazy if we got a point, let alone a win at the World Cup.

The reality though, that's about as well as Australia will probably do. I mean, this great global footballing juggernaut has won 1 (that is ONE) game in World Cups before (with a younger and better team), so the Krauts, Serbs and Ghanaians are obviously quaking in their boots as I type this.

A Tackle We Haven't Seen
It's never going to get any air time and I can see why, the quality is quite rubbish. However i thought I'd write in to say how despicable Vince Grella's challenge on Leo Bertos was this evening in the trans-Tasman farewell game (glorified friendly). Two feet, flying in, a straight red in any game! and to top it all off he complained about the yellow he got.

You are probably asking Leo who??? fair enough but does it really matter? The kid is going to the World Cup and regardless of who the player is and how little (in this case no) chance you have to win the damn thing this is still the dream and you shouldn't have that dream taken away from you by a big bully who couldn't deal with his team being outplayed. Unless you are Michael Ballack in which case you get what you give.

That's one of the things that pissed me off most about it; Grella's unrepentant attitude. If he'd have apologised to the ref and to Leo it would have been a bit easier to take, but his snarling face and mouthing "f**king joke" or whatever it was to the referee makes him even more despicable.

I dont know who this Chris Rattue is but I can tell he knows nothing of the beautiful game and that Melbourne tube has no idea.

From what I saw in Melbourne I thought Ricki had it right in the first half, the Aussies struggled. We made some changes (Injury enforced) as did they and the game changed that is what happens  but all in all after talking to a number of Aussies in the Transport Bar Pim Verbeek has more headaches than Ricki does after that game.
Well done boys..looking forward to SA now and shutting the critics up.

Must have been said already but I found Ryan's comment about how Gr#ll@ does that sort of thing week in week out in the EPL rather odd.

I'm sure he does hard tackles as befits a Vince/Vinnie but if he did two feet studs up tackles everytime he'd be suspend for over half of the season.

I hope Ryan has a a few words to him back in England (like "you smeg awful @rsewipe c*ck").
