My other thing is if I read that article correctly Aus will be in Melbourne for a week beforehand for the Monday game. Why can't both teams pop over here on say the Thursday and make it a 2 match series! Because whatever they think about us in Melbourne, a All Whites Socceroos game would be epic over here.
I was talking about the rest of the world. Think globlally son. Your individual actions and thoughts are yors, I'm talking about the rest of the world when I made that comment,

That's a cop-out DS. We're not playing this game for the world - it's an Oz v NZ game, and they always have a meaning. At least for us.

Not in Melbourne they don't. If we don't fell it here, we don't feel it. You can't bag people for emotions. If you want to read something into the game, go for it.

For me (and I'm sure many others living here) it's a World Cup warm-up game.

i kinda think this argument is somewhat redundant. The FFA tried to get a big name side like you guys wanted, but they couldnt.

So, the options become some average Asian side or us. We are just as good as some average Asian side and there is a stronger marketing angle to it.

So, given the circumstances, its seems a pretty sensible call.

We are saying they have meaning for us you muppet. It is New Zealand vs Australia, that was the whole point I was making from the start. Sure the world doesn't care and neither may the people of Melbourne but for many NZers this will be massive!

Not disagreeing with you Sam, but we're not going to sit here for 3 months and say "oh wow, we're going to whip you guys."

Things have changed here, most Oz people gave you guys support for the Bahrain game and are happy that WPFC can pull 24,000 to a game, but we're not looking for that "rivalry".

Beating NZ ain't going to win the World Cup. Global game, global perspective.

Some of the others will have a go at me for that, but I think you're "global" enough to see through it.

I think everyone's getting wound up over this for nothing.

It'll be a great game between two neighbouring rivals.  We're minnows and Aus are now a top 30 powerhouse, so that's exciting for us.  The Aussie public will come out to see their full team play their last game on home soil before the World Cup, and the fact that it's NZ and we haven't played since London 5 years ago will make it interesting enough to draw a decent crowd I'm sure.

I don't think there'll be blood lust on the part of either team or either set of fans, but I'm sure it will be a good occasion and I'm sure there'll be plenty of supporters of both teams there to enjoy it.

All going to play I will be one of them.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

The good thing is that bc we want to beat them, and will be fired up, eventually its going to get under the skin of the likes of DS (if not already) and they are going to want to crush us for good measure and to shut us up. Consequently, and despite themselves, they will get fired up too.

Play the "Kiwis think they're good enough to beat us" angle in the marketing and even DS will turn up to rub our noses in it.

Well I'm glad its in Melbourne rather than Sydney, it's comparing playing in Wellington rather than Auckland. Surely, its would be a good turn out.

When was the last time we played Australia in Australia. . . .

It was on the 29th May, 2004 for the WCQ. Nearly 6 years ago and it was 1-0 to them.

The last time they played us in NZ was on July 14, 2002 for the Oceania Nation Cup and it was 1-0 to us.AllWhitebelievr2010-02-22 12:19:00

We'd get a better NZ turnout here in Sydney though.

Good point.
Melbourne is alright. More seats at the MCG so its understandable.

I will hopefully be at this one! I have friends just down the road from the MCG and they are kiwis (now aussies ) But if my parents let me make the trip across the ditch... MAN I WILL BE EXCITED! It isnt even that expensive! Anybody know when the tickets will be available?

Dunno if this will get a big crowd. Talkback radio vibe is that people wanted a big name to play, and that NZ's lack of superstar draw cards will affect the crowd.

There are lots of Kiwi's living in Melbourne (albeit not as many as the Gold Coast) so there should be decent support there.

Diego i think you're having a bit of a laugh mate.

FMD! I think I'll retire now based on that. And as for Melbourne "top 3 sporting cities in the World", we see good and bad in everything. We're not goingto turn up just because something is on.

$120 tickets for this game and your buddies at the GGA can have 1 bay only, much like your minimal support you guys had with your section at the Oman game.

GGA is irrelevant now anyway.

you must not have a great grasp on the english language mate. $120 for Cat A is outrageous, i'm not sure where you thought it was anything other than this? The FFA have learnt that the prices were too high for the Oman game, and this has been reflected in the prices for the upcoming Indonesia game. Get a grip.

Ha ha, nice try Sam but no. The emotion is not there. Period. If ticket prices are $20 (which they won't be) I'd go, but normally the FFA charge good coin.

ANALYSIS

AUSTRALIA'S meeting with New Zealand in a World Cup farewell game at the MCG in May has more to do with commercial considerations than footballing imperatives.

It shows how hard it is to get high-quality opposition to play so far from home at a critical time, less than a month before the World Cup finals kick off, without the lure of a huge pay cheque.

Initially the talk was of a game against Croatia, or Russia, maybe even England.

''Distinctly underwhelming'' was the reaction on fan forums after New Zealand was confirmed as Australia's opponent yesterday.

Unless ticket prices are set at very competitive levels, this game is unlikely to get anywhere near the 95,000 who saw Australia take on Greece, the then European champion, before leaving for the World Cup finals in Germany four years ago.

It would have been preferable for Australia to try to get opposition that could replicate more closely the style and abilities of the teams the Socceroos will meet in the group phase in South Africa - Germany, Serbia and Ghana.

Football Federation Australia tried hard to get Croatia - the highest-ranked team not to reach the World Cup finals - to come, but the Croatian soccer authorities could not guarantee a full-strength team.

Possible South American opponents were demanding too high a match fee, it is understood, while European teams who have qualified for South Africa and might have provided attractive opposition would not travel.

So New Zealand it is in a game in which Australia has everything to lose and little to gain. There will be no kudos for Pim Verbeek's players if they win, but there will be plenty of glory for Rick Herbert's Kiwis if they can get a draw or even win at the MCG.

New Zealand will be delighted at being given the chance to avenge its most recent defeat at the hands of Australia - a 1-0 loss in Adelaide in a World Cup qualifier almost six years ago.

Both sides will be at full strength, so what the game might lack in terms of quality, it will at least make up for in intensity.

The New Zealanders will contain several faces familiar to A-League fans, including Gold Coast United sharpshooter Shane Smeltz, the A-League's Golden Boot winner two years in succession.

Australia will begin a pre-World Cup camp in Melbourne on May 19 before playing this game on May 24. The squad will leave for Johannesburg soon afterwards.

Fair enough I misread your comment about the $120 ticket, but your attitude on here stinks otherwise.

Stick to your GGA mates and buggar off. Your group is irrevalent. PS - are you the Paul bloke form the GGA that was in the Herald Sun not long ago?

i like the fact aussies come on here to contribute and debate and even to tell us nobody is interesed in watching the AWs. But dont let it degenerate into trash and name calling. One thing we do better than australians is forums (most of the time). Let's keep it that way.

You are right but the big difference is that NZ had just come back from a 4 week tour of China and OZ had 3 weeks to prepare and only had local players to choose from.

...and only 5000 people turned up.  They didn't deserve to beat Tahiti in the Semi.  It was a travesty.

There was the home game in London as well, our home game I think ?

we actually played ok in that game against the aussies in adelaide - the 1 zip loss. it was quite a gutsy effort. then we rested half the team against the solomons (thinking we'd need everyone for the final against aussie) and had the shocker that needs to be forgooten sooner rather than later. that qualifications tournament was a shambles and an insult to the world cup. the whole oceania qualification series squeezed into a couple of weeks in adelaide, a disgrace. and not even on telly that i can recall. I remember listening to the aussie game on the radio.
