See the warriors commentators today sarcastically referring to the all whites "international soccer game" as a "thrilling 0-0 draw"

Fu*kers. You'd think as sky commentators they'd want to promote the game that was part of sky's lineup. But then I guess it's not like sky actually give a sh*t about 'soccer'

Wasn't at the game as I was in Africa. Did all those indigenous South Africans turn up at the game as expected by many?

Was in the WNZ with ten or so mates who don't really get into the chanting but they appreciate what it's about which is why we chose to sit there. Was a good atmosphere there and that made it a lot more enjoyable. You could be mistaken for thinking you're at a rugby game otherwise. The other thing is that probably 90% of the white noise zone have traveled long distance to the game which makes their effort even more impressive. It's a shame local Auckland football fans don't embrace it (ACFC fans like to get vocal don't they?) because All Whites games should be where all football fans put their differences aside and get amonst it. Maybe too much to ask for though. Not saying everyone in the WNZ needs to get vocal but there were a lot of spare seats there and it just feels more like you're at a football game. I would like to think that my mates would get amongst it if they went to a few more games as well

Not defending Auckland but I've been to a number of Wales games (vs NZ, Aussie, Northern Ireland, Croatia, Sebia) in Wrexham, Cardiff and Swansea where the crowd has been below 5k (mostly Cardiff).

I've been saying this for a while.  From his games at the Olympics to playing as a midfielder for Hereford.  Glad others have got to see him in his natural position and not where Ricki threw him in for the Nix.

There were quite a lot grouped together lower mid of East stand waving flags and cheering whenever the SA turned it on. Others blowing those air-horn sounding thingys. Couldn't say how many. Or how many would have described themselves as 'indigenous'. Might have got into trouble asking eh?

You've got to be kind to the Warriors- they've been in the finals about as much as we have, except they've been around twice or several times as long and are always electrifyingly exciting.

Some of their fans are like Dylan Cleaver for the Herald or Drysdale and Adam Pararoe- never likely to talk to people from football countries or see football as anything other than a cutesy 'feel good' game not played by the hard men of this world.

So what? Simon Doull is a fan or at least talked them up on air. Pics of Conrad Smith in a Phoenix scarf. Happy to have these two on board. If the Warriors commentators of their always successful never dull sport of two vertical lines going up and down a horizontal plane aren't on board well, whatever. Are all of us always on board with the Warriors even when they are coming last and second last and not winning WCs? Haven't really watched them since Campion, Jones and Ali Lautiti.

And to be honest, they're partly right. Screw the we played beautiful football thing. We were toothless in attack and didn't show a whole lot of urgency. We need more goal scorers in the team, even with Kosta and Wood back. The game desperately needed a goal, but it seemed like neither side was really hungry for it, a little like they were pulling their punches. Or a big centre forward throwing his weight around and causing trouble for the defence.  Only really decent shot I remember was from the free kick and probably the best save I've ever seen Mossy make.

Besides- there is the WC coming up. And just quietly they will be watching that. Talking about it at work. We have to demand and earn their respect with our performances, not moan at stuff like this. Get a coach, get our stars and ex-stars in behind our team and keep the momentum of the Ricki years going. I don't care how we do it frankly, but I want us to win games and worry our opponents.

Andy Martin has really got his work cut out. I hope he's been in touch with Graham Seatter, Mike Glading et al...and asked them about what they did and thought...cos Seatts was the one who started us on the WC run by having the AWs play games together...

Actually I think other than ignorance of the game, there is also the inferiority complex in knowing that in either egg ball code it is hard to scrape together 16 teams to compete internationally. Whereas Association Football has to beat its 209 member countries away with a stick and only allow 32 to compete every four years.

In League's case there's three teams. Australia,  England and New Zealand.  France and Papua New Guinea can hardly be taken seriously. Probably as serious as Tahiti is in football circles. Then when League has it's own World Cup, all those that never got picked for the three main countries go and play for their relations.

In Rubgy Union's case there's about 24 countries involved at decent standard and that's not bad but a long way off what football has.

I'd say 10 (rugby championship plus 6 nations). Then I guess you'd include the island nations if you wanted to be generous.

Those countries all appeared I. World cup finals. Lets be honest some teams that have played in world cup finals over the years havent exactly been of the highest quality so you have to respect the presence despite the codes.

Half of those teams get pumped by 100+ at World Cups. Would not call that a decent standard.

That's like saying Eddie the Eagle and Eric the Eel are of a decent standard as they both represented their countries at the Olympics.

Well Junior, if they made the qualifying standard then you have to rightly assume that they indeed were. Sure we know the reality of the situation - again, regardless of the sport, but there are standards that are measured and accepted. Especially with Olympic qualifying. At the end of the day, they appeared.

Chompingchange, in support of yur argument, Kenya springs to mind. They are doing alright on the 7's front.

Since the 1987 RWC the following teams have made the semifinals of the tournament: NZ, Australia, Wales, France, Scotland, England, South Africa, Argentina (8 teams in 7 tournaments)

Since the 1986 football WC the following teams have made the semifinals of the tournament: Argentina, Belgium, France, (West) Germany, Italy, England, Bulgaria, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Netherlands, Croatia, South Korea, Turkey, Portugal, Uruguay, Spain (17 teams in 7 tournaments, or 18 if you consider West Germany and Germany separately)

I think that says something about the relative depth of teams at the tournaments

But we could win this!!!!!

"It was a not so baaad performance for Colombia's woolly warriors. To celebrate the country's return to the WC after a 16-year absence, artisans in the high Andean town of Nobsa put on what they billed as the first soccer match played by sheep. On one side, dressed in Colombia's colours, were 10 four-legged players, each named in honour of one of the country's top talents. Their rivals represented powerhouse Brazil. About 500 beer-soused spectators cheered on the farmyard footballers, which were trained for two weeks to recognise and kick a foam football through a goal made of wooden logs. Result: a 4-3 victory for Colombia., thanks to a 50th minute goal by mutton midfielder "James Rodriguez, whose two footed namesake plays for AC Monaco."-

I would imagine if you used the semi-final argument league would have a few different teams... (too lazy to look)  obviously i think football is a more competative game throughout the world.
