Chile
Ricardo Gareca coached Peru against Huddo's AWs in 2017 and against Danny Hay's team at Barcelona in early 2022. Waineo had a goal disallowed for offside that day.

Young Garbs announced himself with a big 2nd half, and Peruvians were apparently surprised by how much better we were compared to 2017.

An experimental, rebuilding Chilean team - so a rare (first ever?) win over a Sth American team is a chance.

Maybe their Golden Generation played on too long?? Most them kept getting picked into their late 30s.

Gareca is a lauded coach, who did a great job over two WC cycles with a no stars Peruvian side. Qualified for Russia and so nearly for Qatar when Sth America only had 4.5 spots.

Gareca was appointed in Jan 2024, and even though Chile finished last in CONMEBOL WC qualifying, he kept his job. Rebuild phase starts now, and I'm sure like all Sth American countries they will have some exciting young local talent coming through. Have won their last 3 matches (friendlies) Peru x2, and Russia in Russia.

XI I'd want to see on Monday (presuming FdV is unavailable, if he is available I'd leave him in and keep Old further forward, potentially at the expense of Waine):

Paulsen
Payne Surman Bindon Old
Thomas Stamenic Bell
Just Waine Randall

Would like to see Randall given an opportunity as #9 at some point in the game too.

If everyone was fully fit and available it would be:

Paulsen
Payne Boxall Surman Cacace
Bell Stamenic Thomas
Just Wood Old

Thomas won't start on Monday. Going to his sister's wedding in Te Puke this weekend between games.
He's also gotta manage his body with Zwolle still a chance to be relegated, and he's had a hammy issue with them the last few weeks.

This season is the most football mins he's played since 2017/18!! So not surprising he's having a few niggles near the finish line in Holland.

For Chile on Monday I'd go

Paulsen
Payne/Tuiloma Surman Bindon Old
Rufer Stamenic Bell
Just Waine Randall

I remember Rufer, Stamenic and Bell working really well as a combo against the USA in 2024, after the AWs midfield was over run in the prior game verus Mexico. Stamenic yes playing a bit further forward, and putting Just through at one point for a big chance on goal.

Payne needs to be playing better, and I'd give thought to starting Tuiloma (if fit enough) at RB. He has years of experience marking tricky Latino players in the MLS.

agree with everythijg you say except Id put Ellio in there- Tuiloma is not a RB - gets exposed 1 v 1 badly and doesnt have the wheels. Maybe can play RHF of back 3 buit not RB in a back 4.

Agree with your comment re Rufer, Bell and Stamenic and how this feels like that tour whn the AWs resposnded with real bite in that next game.

Pretty well confirmed that Thomas won't start Monday night. But hopefully he can come off the pine to play with both Stamenic & Bell as a trio for some part of the 2nd half.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360954383/stars-align-all-whites-midfielder-ryan-thomas-attend-his-sisters-wedding

Ryan Thomas' sister, Haley, wanted the All Whites star to be able to attend her wedding.
So she made an effort to time it for a break in the busy club football calendar he has been subject to ever since he moved to the Netherlands as a teenager. The March 2026 international window.
At the time – about 18 months ago – there was no reason to believe he would be busy then.
His most recent All Whites appearance had come in November 2019, five years earlier, before a series of injuries left him barely playing at any level.

“I wasn't in the picture for the All Whites,” Thomas said on Friday after they lost to Finland at Eden Park. “I didn't think I was coming back to the All Whites, to be honest. So I told her yeah, do it in March in '26 and then I'll 100% have days off.”............

.......But if the stars hadn't aligned, he would have been absent this month, for what are the team's last matches before their World Cup squad is named.
“I spoke to Baze last year about it when I came back into the group and he was open that family comes first.”

A stroke of good fortune came when the All Whites secured two home matches this month – the second is also at Eden Park, against Chile on Monday – rather than playing in Europe.

"Lucky for us we can combine [the All Whites’ matches and the wedding]..

“It was good that I could come back here, play the game [on Friday, then go to the wedding on Saturday], and then I'll be involved again on Monday."
Ryan's parents were at Eden Park to watch Friday's match, but were on their way home to Te Puke afterwards for Haley's big day.

The midfielder isn't due back in camp until Sunday evening and appears set for a bench role against Chile.
He was also managing a minor niggle from Friday's match, but indicated afterwards that shouldn't be a major concern.
His place in the starting XI is likely to be taken by Joe Bell, who has been managing his own calf niggle, but came off the bench to play 10 minutes on Friday.

Between their respective niggles and Thomas’ weekend away, the wait to see him, Bell and Marko Stamenić on the field at the same time could continue for the eighth match since Thomas’ return.

Though he has remained relatively coy in his public comments, it is understood Bazeley is eager to start all three of them, with Bell and Stamenić playing at the base of midfield and Thomas pushed forward, though there would also be a degree of fluidity.

In the All Whites’ seven matches since September, Stamenić and Thomas have started together at the base of midfield three times, Bell and Thomas twice, Bell and Stamenić once (after doing so 11 times previously under Bazeley) and Stamenić and Alex Rufer once.

Getting all three of Bell, Stamenić and Thomas on the pitch together is likely to help the All Whites fare better in the battle for control of midfield, which they’ll need to win if they are to get the World Cup win they are chasing in June.

Thomas said on Friday: “There’s a little bit of a running joke going on at the moment between us three.

“We’re very eager to play together, and you’ve got three players that play as a six [a defensive midfielder], so it'll be interesting to see how that dynamic works.

“Playing with Marko was great. He's going to be a driving force of this national team going forward for 10 – hopefully a little bit longer – years, so it's really good to play with him.

“Hopefully I get to play with both of them on Monday night, especially before the World Cup – we need to make sure we get some some reps in together as a three.

“But we’ve also got the games before the World Cup for that, so hopefully we'll be able to do that.”

For his part, Stamenić said: “I would definitely love to have all three playing at the same time”.

Gareca actually resigned way back in June last year:
"Gareca stepped down from his managerial role on 10 June 2025" (Wiki)
He was replaced for Chile's final two WCQ's by the Chile u-20 coach Nicolas Cordova who is still the interim coach:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicol%C3%A1s_C%C3%B3rdova

Cordova's results have been good in the six games since he took over:
Wins: 4 / Draws: 1 / Losses: 1
Includes two friendly wins vs. Peru home and away, a home draw with WC qualifier Uruguay in Chile's last qualifier and a 2-0 win away in Russia last November.
The only loss under Cordoba was in the second-to-last WCQ away vs. Brazil

1. Familiar opponents for the All Whites
Chile are the team New Zealand have faced most often from South America.

The All Whites have recorded one draw and three losses in four previous meetings, including a scoreless draw in Auckland in 1998, which was part of Chile’s preparation for the 1998 FIFA Men’s World Cup in France.

New Zealand lost to Chile twice in 2006 (4-1 and 1-0). Shane Smeltz scored the only goal for the All Whites, who were captained on the tour by current Auckland FC assistant coach Danny Hay.

Hay also played in the 1998 draw (0-0 at Mt Smart).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEU_gFLPzH4&t=81s

The South American side — known as La Roja — will be the first CONMEBOL nation to play in New Zealand since Peru visited Wellington for a FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off in 2017.

2. A long football history
Chile have appeared at nine FIFA World Cup finals.

They did not qualify for the 2026 tournament and are currently in a rebuilding phase following the gradual exit of several senior players.

3. Best World Cup performance
Chile’s best result came when they hosted the 1962 World Cup.

They beat Yugoslavia 1-0 to finish third, with Leonel Sánchez scoring four goals at the tournament.

4. Copa America success
Chile won their first Copa America title in 2015, beating Argentina on penalties in the final on home soil.

They defended the title the following year by beating Argentina again in a penalty shootout at the Copa America Centenario in the United States.

5. A golden generation winding down
Chile are transitioning after the peak of a golden generation.

Experienced players such as Gary Medel, Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sánchez and Eduardo Vargas have either retired or featured only sparingly in recent seasons.

6. Strong Premier League links
Sixteen Chilean players have appeared in the English Premier League.
Alexis Sanchez … one of the greatest players to come out of Chile.
Forward Alexis Sánchez (Arsenal and Manchester United) is the country’s record cap holder (168) and leading goalscorer (51 goals), while goalkeeper Claudio Bravo won the Premier League with Manchester City in 2018.

As a 17-year-old, Sánchez made his full international debut against New Zealand.

7. Club success in South America
Colo-Colo remain Chile’s most successful club internationally.

They won the Copa Libertadores in 1991, becoming the first Chilean team to claim South America’s premier club competition.

Midfielder Marco Rojas, capped 46 times for New Zealand, played for Colo-Colo in 2022-23, fulfilling his dream of playing in the birth country of his father.
Marco Rojas … The All White played 13 times for Colo-Colo.

8. Other New Zealand connections
Chilean U-20 international midfielder Luis Felipe Gallegos plays for men’s A-League club Auckland FC. In 2019, he was called up for the full national squad for a friendly against Peru, but the match was cancelled. He remains uncapped at top level.

Two-cap Chile international Patricio Almendra had two spells in New Zealand, playing for Lower Hutt City in 1998 and joining Auckland-based Football Kingz in the Australian National Soccer League in 2002-03.

Having built a coaching/management career over the past decade, he recently left his role as manager of second-tier Chile club Deportes Concepción.

9. Great names from the past
Chile have produced some outstanding players across different eras.

Iván Zamorano and Marcelo Salas formed a prolific strike partnership for Chile, playing together at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

In club football, Zamorano scored 247 goals in 504 matches, playing in Chile, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and Mexico. Highlights included winning La Liga in 1995 with Real Madrid and the UEFA Cup in 1998 with Inter Milan.

Chile international George Robledo became the first South American to win the English FA Cup when he helped Newcastle United to lift the trophy in 1951.
10. In the dugout
Nicolás Córdova is the current interim head coach of Chile, and has coached their national U-20 team.

He took over the role from Argentine Ricardo Gareca, who coached Peru in their 2017 FIFA World Cup play-offs against the All Whites.

Córdova is tasked with rebuilding the national team following the decline of its golden generation.

Hopefully we get a decent crowd.
I want to see a much much better effort from the AWs. This is their last hit out before heading to the USA.
They need to show grit and determination, especially on defense. Past AWs WC teams were hard to break down. We have to get this right because we will be playing against the likes of Salah, Marmoush,  de Bruyne, Doku and Lukaku etc
Belgium just put 5 goals past the USA.
No more second chances now. We have to prove against Chile that we are ready.

Man on a mission: why Chile’s interim coach has given debuts to 13 players

Chile are chasing their fifth international friendly win in a row when they face New Zealand’s All Whites on Monday.

And they’ll be trying to extend the sequence with a comparatively young and inexperienced squad, as interim head coach Nicolás Córdova tries to rebuild Chile’s national squad after their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup.

In two stints as interim head coach since late 2023, Córdova has debuted 13 players across six matches.

The three latest debuts came in Friday’s 4-2 FIFA Series win against Africa’s Cape Verde, when FIFA U-20 World Cup players Felipe Faúndez (20), Benjamín Chandía (23) and Diego Ulloa (22) stepped onto Auckland’s Eden Park.

Others previously given their first full internationals by Córdova are Vicente Pizarro (23), César Pérez (23), Iván Román (19), Emiliano Ramos (21), Ian Garguez (21), Maximiliano Gutiérrez (21), Lautaro Millán (20), Francisco Salinas (26) and Agustín Arce (21).

The only new addition to the Chile squad over 30 has been goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux (32), who will likely face his Swansea City teammate Marko Stamenić in Monday’s match.

After the victory against Cape Verde, Córdova told media he was driving the move to a younger national squad through call-ups and providing match opportunities.

“In a transition like the one we’re undertaking, you have to compete. The players need to get match time.

“I see this reflected in what’s happening with the youth teams. When you create a project, it can’t be a project of less than eight or 10 years, because the kids who are starting to train are 14 or 15 years old, and that’s what happens when you’re changing a generation.

“We went from an average age of 29 to 30 years to an average of 23 to 24 years for the team, and that’s the result of a process.

“Our national team, which won the Copa América and played in the World Cup, achieved the title in 2015, and that process began in 2007.

“This is a process, and we have to understand that some things take longer. The players know this and are open to being coached. The group is in great shape, and we’re going to continue on this path until the Federation tells us what to do.”

Córdova is well-positioned to lead the transition. He’s also the technical chief of Chile’s national youth teams.

“I’ve said it countless times: there’s a lot of talent in Chile; we have to train it, train it well, and put it in a position to compete internationally.”

I hope to see Old as LB. We can't be relying on FDV is our 2nd choice there - it's just not good enough.

Randall has to get a start after his performance off the bench.

Also hope we get to see Thomas, Bell, Stam all on the field together. That needs to be our starting line-up come WC time.

For today i'd go with something like...

Paulsen
Elliot, Surman, Bindon, Old
Bell, Stam, Rufer
Just, Randall
Waine

The below is clearly our top lineup, based off form and quality.

Paulsen
Bindon, Surman, Boxall, Libby,
Thomas, Bell, Stam
Just, McCowatt,
Wood

Not playing Old at LB would be a crime at this point. Doesn't solve our RB issue though - Elliot isn't good enough for the WC, but I think it's fair to see how he will go against Chile.

I'm pretty much in agreeance with ElemenoP's above line-up for tonight. Don't mind whether De Jong got a run for the first half instead of Waine just to see where he's at, although alone up front probably isn't his strong suit. Would like another look at Bayliss too if he could swap in for Rufer.

There's nothing from Friday to suggest how it could happen but the boys just have to, HAVE TO find away to dig deep and play out of their skins. It would be a real downer for both the fans and the teams morale if they were to head into the WC off the back of two pastings at home. Friday was unacceptable. It's been years of talk now that this team has the players that can make things happen for the AW's. Time to actually deliver on all that talk and promise!

So going on the principle that “you’re only as good as your last game”, Chile beat a side who just drew with a side who beat us. Make of that what you will.

Edit: Replace “drew” with “won on penalties” - I didn’t realise that was a thing for a friendly, glad I came straight back with my overpriced food and didn’t miss the shootout

                  Bell Stan
                      Just
 McCowatt                          Waine
                       Kosta

Waine has done his best work for vale on the left so use kosta as a false 9
I just don’t think Elliot is up to it yet so I’d stick with Payne or possibly give bill a run.

Same for all the FIFA series tourneys. I think it's 2 pts for a 'win' on pens.
AWs lost on pens to Tunisia March 2024 (0-0 in NT), though that might have been a 3rd/4th playoff so different again?

Been saying this for ages, but, imho, Payne is well off his best, McCowatt isn't that skilful and hasn't shown enough, and this season, Kosta too is now struggling to get a start, not the force he was. At least Waine is not starting.
I'd have Elliot for Payne, de vries or McGarry for McCowatt (Old at LW). And maybe Bayliss for Kosta.
Most important selection of all though is the selector. Perhaps NZ can do better there.
