Why are they playing in such a backwater? Chongqing's population is only 23 million (30 million in wider area)*. Wow!
COYAW

*to be fair, how the city boundaries are defined are all over the show - but it's pretty populous!
I know, I know, its serious!

How silly buggers would it be if this ends uo being the only game we win in the window and nobody gets to watch it.

This game is clearly not being taken hugely seriously by either team, and it maybe completely different run on XIs in each half.

The AWs may win, but it won't mean much. There will be no crowd, no atmosphere. It's a bonus run around to try a few combos, work off some rust.

But if Baze fails to get a win against either China or Panama then I'm not sure, he should stay in charge beyond this year. Those are 2 winnable games that matter more, against teams near our level (yes Panama ranked alot higher). But to show the AWs are progressing we should be winning at least one of those 2 matches. Esp as Panama like us are not at full strength post the WC (5 debutants in their squad) for Japan.

The Waine Train opens the scoring say NZ Football. I can't believe my eyes. 😉
This is what it was like back in 1890. Get a telegram back mentioning it, since no video.

Twitter. Half an hour gone and we’ve got a goal announcement and a vid of them walking out onto the pitch. Not a peep otherwise; from their wording, I was expecting a running commentary like you’d expect from any club side

I'm imagining it's like an A League match. A goal fest 4 goals by half time. Defence, what defence?

End score 2:2. With this being a late organized opponent change the All Whites really went with substitutions beyond the usual. Moses Dyer on.
Stipe Ukich debut!
An acceptable result considering the starters and substitutions. Next v China please limit them to 1 goal. 🤞

Gray on at HT, and Ukich at 66 mins making it 3 debutants for the night. Dyer on with Ukich

Gray the only HT sub, with another 8 subs through the 2nd half.

An early Ben Waine finish running on to a ball in behind gave us the lead in the 5th minute.

Palestine equalised in 27' with a header from a corner.

Jesse Randall gave us the lead again on 35' before Palestine equalised on 39' by winning the ball in transition and crossing to finish.

Henry Gray is on to replace Michael Woud at half-time making his debut and instantly into the action with two big saves from close range

For context, no win in this window would take us to 1W in 18 matches. Hard to defend that record with "a lot of positive moments from the match, learned a lot about what we need to work on..."

The All Whites returned to international action for the first time since the FIFA World Cup 2026, drawing 2-2 with Palestine in the first of four matches in this September/October FIFA window.

Due to the game being a late addition to the window, one of the reasons an international broadcast was not available, All Whites head coach Darren Bazeley named a much-changed side, looking to give game time to his squad knowing they will be playing a significant amount of football over the next two weeks.

None of the players who started the team’s last match, the defeat to Belgium in Vancouver, were named in the starting side, with opportunities instead given to members of the wider squad to impress.

George Stanger, who has previously been part of All Whites squads but had never taken to the field, was named to make his debut, while Michael Woud, fresh from a title-winning season with Auckland FC, started in goal for the All Whites for the first time since November 2023.

Stanger was one of three players to make their debuts on the night, with Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Henry Gray coming on for Woud at half-time, while 19-year-old Stipe Ukich, called up for the first time, replaced Logan Rogerson in the 66th minute to earn his first cap.

The game started with a bang for Aotearoa, with
Ben Waine opening the scoring after just five minutes.

A ball over the top from debutant Stanger found the onrushing Waine, who slotted home past the Palestinian goalkeeper at the near post.

In the 27th minute, Palestine levelled.

A Palestine corner found Assad Al Hamlawi, who headed home to make it 1-1.

But eight minutes later the All Whites were in front again.

New Zealand won the ball high up the pitch, allowing Lachie Bayliss to cross into the box, where Jesse Randall was first to the ball after a scramble to give his team the lead.

However, Palestine had other ideas and levelled the match at 2-2 in the 39th minute after winning the ball in transition, crossing and finding Oday Dabbagh for the finish.

The second half saw the All Whites make a raft of changes to give all players opportunities:

56 minutes – Callan Elliot for Dane Ingham, Tyler Bindon for Bill Tuiloma
66 minutes – Moses Dyer for Ben Waine, Stipe Ukich for Logan Rogerson, Marko Stamenić for Alex Rufer, Eli Just for Lachie Bayliss
76 minutes – Callum McCowatt for Owen Parker-Price, Dalton Wilkins for Jesse Randall

But the game remained level at 2-2.

Baze talking like he knows a win is needed on this tour.
https://twitter.com/NZ_Football/status/2103095613328114147

They will be underdogs at the 60,000-capacity Longxing Football Stadium.

After Sunday’s match, the All Whites move to Japan, where they will face Panama next Thursday [kickoff 7.10pm NZ time] and either Ecuador or Japan the following Monday [kickoff 7.30pm or 9.30pm NZ time].

Chris Wood is set to replace Dyer in the squad for those matches.

Centre back Finn Surman was also set to come in for those matches, but suffered an injury while training with his club, Portland Timbers, this week.

No replacement has been called up as yet, but Lukas Kelly-Heald from the Wellington Phoenix would be the leading contender.

I'm not reading anything in to the result with such a weak NZ starting eleven.
Not a single player who started in the World Cup.
Only Jesse Randall took the field during the World Cup - and only as a sub (60 mins total over 3 sub apps)
Five of the starters weren't in the World Cup squad.
Of the subs who came on in the second half of the Palestine game, Callan Elliott made one 13 min. sub appearance in the WC,
Tyler Bindon started the final game v Belgium but was a late sub in NZ's first two games, McCowatt started two games and made one sub app.,
while Stamenic and Just started all three WC games.
The other Palestine subs Gray, Dyer, Wilkins and Ukich weren't in the WC squad.

Well as it was NZ football I was expecting the updates to be crap and non existent and of course they did not disappoint.

Embarrassing.

I’m sure the Palestinians with limited funds and considerably more issues to tackle, did a lot better.

Games like this prove Baze needs to go in December, but the incompetent board will re-sign him

Hang your heads in shame NZ football and give yourself three uppercuts for being lazy. Then give yourself a black eye for being stupid.

How is NZF lazy and stupid in your eyes? Not sure I understand what you are arguing/saying?

Have you watched the above highlights package from the Palestine angle?

Lazy and stupid for not caring about their fans. Updates were absolutely crap.

Reddit was better.

lazy or incompetent can be hurled at them for sure. how hard would it have been to get a couple of the trainers take pictures/video of the game and post on social media?
or even better when the game was arranged and the "no TV coverage" was decided send your media person a long to that match for the very purpose of getting coverage to the fans.
but then this is NZF, the very same people who failed to make sure a fax machine was turned on to get a certain goalkeepers ban sorted before the world cup among other similar "oooops" moments.
it's just embarrassing that Palestine can arrange a highlights package and we can't

I'm not bothered about the minimal coverage and reporting from NZF.
It was a hastily arranged training match for both sides.
Of the sort that usually occur behind closed doors.
National associations all over the world usually don't provide a lot of details on such games.

NZ team in that game:
I'm not reading anything in to the result with such a weak NZ starting eleven.
Not a single player who started in the World Cup.
In my opinion, of the starters, only Bayliss and Randall are good enough to be credible starters for NZ going forward.
The others are untried quantities who have yet to prove themselves - or just not good enough (Ingham, Sutton, Rogerson, Woud - and of the subs, Dyer).
Baze is clearly giving players who didn't make the World Cup cut a chance and trying a few promising young options like Ukich and Gray.
As we know, a host of first choice players (and even second choice players) weren't in the squad for this game - and we don't have much depth.
Missing: Wood, Payne, Surman, Thomas, Crocombe, Bell, Cacace, Garbett, Boxall, Old, Singh, Pijnaker, de Vries (Paulsen was there but didn't play).
Of the starters, only Jesse Randall took the field during the World Cup - and only as a sub (60 mins total over 3 sub apps)

Some nice saves from Gray in that 2nd half. For the first time the Nix may have the better keeper in the NZ derbies this season.

But what was Tuiloma doing with that 2nd Palestine goal. You can see BT glance around a few times prior. He knows there is an opposition player loitering.

Yes some onus also on Woud & Sutton to communicate the threat (should have been easy to yell that out in an empty ground), but Tuiloma lets the ball run too easily across the goal mouth for a tap in.

45 AWs caps and over 13 years as a pro, and he still makes bad mistakes like that. Baze correct to leave him out of his WC squad.

Bindon & Stanger could be playing more mins than ideal this window.

Oh and the Palestine FA had nothing on Twitter through this game,. But kudos to them for posting these one sided highlights with the dramatic sound track.

On this evidence Gray’s the better keeper.

Saves, communication, organising his defense and sweeping calmly, and playing out from the back.
