Just watched a peruvian tv show were they singled out Hudson for praise...essentially saying that the best thing NZ had was the coach. They stated he is a modern coach

Lol, he has the best talent available that any NZ coach has ever had with 5 players in the top leagues of Europe (Boyd, Wood, Reid, Thomas, Rojas). This could arguably be our golden generation.

Yeah maybe they are just impressed with his interviews...They do state that NZ did well for passages vs Mexico and Russia and give him credit for that.

Sadly the Netherlands are arguably no longer a top European league (currently sitting 12th in the UEFA coefficient ranking and with no relevant CL team in years) - but that is another discussion.

On exactly what passages of the game against Russia NZ did well? All I remember is how lucky we were not to lose by more than 2 goals. In the Confeds the only moment the AWs played 'well' was the first half against Mexico

No idea, you would have to ask them haha.

They seem to hold NZ in greater estimation than some NZ fans, certain sections of the Peruvian press while confident in Peru are aware that NZ has the potential to win.

They probably just read all the gushing praise on Hudson's Wikipedia page.

They obviously didn't watch the Belarus or Northern Ireland games, that's for sure.

The idea is that he is a Bielsa disciple and he has a photo with Mourinho so the press goes from there.

How about NZF charging $10 for match day programmes!? Having a laugh!

That’s less than £5 for a programme, cheaper then many British clubs and AB programmes in Europe.

But theirs these days are not full of adverts. Hence the price.

As a side note on Fifa 18, I played Peru in a friendly and we managed to win 2-0, Wood scoring one. Fingers crossed it is a positive omen.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I would have thought that travelling straight after the game on a long haul flight would not be the best thing to do after hopefully a bruising encounter against the All Whites (Even if they are in 1st/business class). Virtually no time for any recovery/treatment for sore bodies etc...Last thing i'd want to do after a hard football game is get on a 15 hour flight!

Also, what is the ideal result for NZ after the first leg to approach the second?

2-0 Win for NZ (clean sheet, I would have thought is a must given its the first leg) Is this a pipe dream?

Or will Hudson tactics be park the bus if we happen to go 1-0 up? (Please no...)

Nooo!! Not the most dangerous score in football!

Apparently we're "UFWC virgins." Your first time is always special etc.

That's a pretty cool concept tbf. The Ranfurly Shield of international football. Just wish it wasn't a team as good as Peru taking our virginity

Would be brilliant if we won the 2nd leg, then went & lost to Tahiti/Fiji/New Caledonia/etc, leaving the UFWC buried in OFC oblivion for years.

First leg 2 - 1 to us

Second leg 2 - 1 to them. Fallon scores extra time winner. War declared.

So did I mate, got a 2-0 too with Wood scoring one and Barbs scoring the other. Who else but late sub Moses Dyer to give both assists

Must be getting excited, I had a dream last night Peru got a penalty. They hit the post and it bounced out, we then went down the other end and scored from a corner.

Dreams are true right

Hey guys, we're doing The Breeze breakfast show tomorrow morning live from the Aborist Cafe on Willis St and would love to have some Peru fans on the show. Does anyone know of any or where they might be staying so we can approach them?

The English Championship where Smith plays is likely a higher level then the Netherlands and definitely higher then Portugal.

It most definitely isn't. Granted, lower half of the Championship is better than the lower halves of the Eredivisie and Primeira Liga, but the likes of Ajax/Feyenoord/PSV/Utrecht and Ryan Thomas' own club Zwolle could comfortably beat any championship team, as could Benfica/Lisbon/Porto/Braga. Far more talent comes from these leagues than the championship, they actually play with the ball on the ground in the Netherlands and Portugal. But anyway, Most Zwolle fans agree also that Thomas is by far the best player on the team and will move to a bigger club soon. Potentially a good replacement for when Ayoub leaves Utrecht, but similarly Hakim Ziyech will likely move from Ajax soon and I'd love to see Thomas get signed by a club as huge as AA (not just because I come from a long line of Amsterdammers). I think then we really would be looking at a golden generation, particularly if Boyd continues his rise through Europe (although for now Tondela is a good fit)

I think if you compare the highlights of the 2010 squad (Nelsen, Smith, Reid, Elliott, Vicelich, Smeltz, Killen, Fallon) with those of this squad (Reid, Smith, Thomas, Rojas, Wood) we are not in quite as strong a place as then, but we do have better depth now and I think the current crop have the potential to be better than the 2010 side, in the next WC cycle.

Interesting to note that the 2010 WC squad had four NZFC players and two members of Unattached FC. This squad has no #HandyPrem or Unattached players, but does of course feature players from the sixth and seventh tiers of English football.

Brockie at RWB not a terrible shout, given our options. Article cites his game against Australia; his performance at wingback against Honduras is the best I've seen him play for the AWs.

So far have counted 16 Peru fans just from either Auckland airport, Wellington Airport and the bus to the city! Can't wait!!!

I just got back from Baghdad. One of the troops/security contractors at the front of the US Embassy asked me where I was from.I told him I'm an Aussie married to a Kiwi. Turns out he was Peruvian. Said they're all short blokes and the extra height of the All Whites was going to be to their advantage. He didn't sound particularly optimistic about their (Peru's) qualifying.

Good luck to your lads... Hopefully one of us gets to the World Cup.

Not much difference right now between Wellington and Lima weather although will be cold after Brisbane.

I read I think on stuff that Peru are travelling back to Lima straight after the match on Saturday. Obviously they’ll have to go to Auckland first and fuel up but they’ll have an extra day or so to prepare for the return leg.

Flying Welly - Lima direct. No Auckland stopover.

From what I can gather, they have an Air NZ chartered A320 from Auckland to here on Friday and back to Auckland Saturday evening.

seems Peru only have two doubts...

Advincula or Corzo at right back

Farfan or Ruidiaz at CF

Advincula is probably the fastest peruvian in the squad

Day before game... super pumped... went on mainstream media to read the latest... big world cup qualifier, biggest sport in the world, 4 yearly peak of footballing interest you would think... main Sport page on Stuff has literally zero articles about football.

Had actually been enjoying the pieces recently by Hislop and Voerman, what happened??? Cmon media, FIRE UP!

I am expecting...

                             Marinovich

               Boxall        Reid         Smith

Roux                                                      Wynn

                         Themi     Thomas

                                  McG

                         Wood      Brockie

This team is built around size, and I think set pieces are where we can do the most damage. Brockie plays up top because we need someone to play off Wood and can still bring a physical presence. Something our other strikers can't (Smeltz is past it IMO)

Themi is our most experienced player at DM and should play, although it was hard to go past Tuiloma for his athletic ability, long throw and aerial threat.

Lewis is also unlucky not to start ahead of McG who has it over him in experience.

Boxall has to play at CB because of his pace. Smith, is sluggish, but reads the game well so we we can't have another slow defender in the back three in the form of Durante.

I'm expecting

             Marinovic

            Wood Rojas
