Sounds like Paulsen is settling in nicely…

Paulsen has swapped the flights of the A-League for bus trips in Ekstraklasa and while he has done quite a bit of travel around Poland with three away games he said he was not yet up to being a tour guide for his All Whites team mates.

But he does want to tempt them with the local delicacy.

"I think the one thing I'd love to have boys try is the Polish traditional dish which is pierogi, that might be something that some of the boys might be able to get into."

Pierogi are filled dumplings made by wrapping unleavened dough around a filling and cooked in boiling water. They are occasionally flavored with a savory or sweet garnish. Typical fillings include potato, cheese, quark, sauerkraut, ground meat, mushrooms, fruits, or berries.

Possible lineup -
Paulsen
Payne, Boxall, Bindon, FDV
Bell, Thomas, Stamenic
McCowatt, Wood & Singh

If it was a World Cup game based on current form I'd start Surman, push Boxy to LCB and Bindon to the bench. But it's a window as per Sept where the MLS CBs will need to be rotated.

You wrote Bell twice, I’m assuming one of the Bells would be Thomas?

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/10/09/the-all-whites-abroad-what-it-means-for-their-travelling-fans/

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/10/09/polish-coach-keen-to-use-all-whites-match-to-try-out-new-faces-playing-style/

Poland head coach Jan Urban says he’ll use their match against New Zealand to test some fringe players, and he has hinted that he’ll experiment with their team’s system and style of play.

At his pre-match media conference, the recently-appointed Urban said: “We’re in our second training camp together, which is similar to the last one in many respects, but different in a few.

“We’re still searching for the best possible solutions — we’re talking about the system, the style of play, and individual players.

“This is being done in real life because there’s simply no time. We’ll see some new faces in tomorrow’s match. I’d like to test those who haven’t played much.”

Urban was appointed in mid-July, after the resignation of his predecessor, Michal Probierz.

One change will be the choice of goalkeeper for the match against the All Whites.

“For now, Łukasz Skorupski is the top choice, having earned his spot earlier, but tomorrow someone else will be in goal,” Urban said.

“I’m tempted to try playing with two centre-backs, but I don’t think it’ll work.

“I want to get a feel for the new players, and I know I won’t get a 100% answer. Even if the team plays well, I won’t be sure it would be the same in a competitive match. Players react differently to the added pressure of playing in competitive matches.”

As for the New Zealand team, Urban is not sure what to expect.

“New Zealand are a tough opponent to predict. They’ve already qualified for the World Cup, and they’re coming to Europe to play local teams — they’ve already played Ukraine, and they’ll play us and Norway. It’s a big unknown.”

From my memories of living in the UK that 1-1 draw in 1974 is still talked about. The Polish keeper a mythical one man wall or something.

10. Famous moments in history
Poland have had many memorable moments in their footballing history but few have generated as much interest as their 1-1 draw with England in 1973, a result that eliminated the 1966 world champions from the qualifiers for the 1974 FIFA World Cup.

The Polish side comprised a starting line-up of amateur players and the game made legends of goalscorer Jan Domarski and goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewsk whose heroics denied England a winner.

Diamond midfield?

I think focussing on keeping the ball as much as possible is our best chance of doing anything at the World Cup. The team's strength is the midfield. We ain't going to score multiple goals. It's going to be 0-0, 1-1 or a 1-0 win at best.

We haven't scored more than 1 goal against a top 50 nation, since Japan in Tokyo in 2014, when they were up 3-0 after about 12 mins, and then coasted home. Apart from McCowatt no one is scoring goals at any sort of level.

Hold the ball as much as possible, frustrate the opposition (like the Socceroos were in the first half in Canberra), nick a goal somehow.

Provided everyone is fit, front 6 to start has to be Bell Thomas Stamenic Singh McCowatt Wood right? Old the only other name in the reckoning with Just out

Yes I think that is the starting front 6.
Old just isn't getting many mins at St Etienne at the moment.
Garbett is probably the player pushing most hardest to break into that above 6.

He's highly unlikely to start either game, but Niche Cache describes Parker-Price as being quite like Just. Someone who drifts infield and links up, when in the attacking 3rd.

So if OPP does comes on as a sub in either game it may well be as a type of winger, rather than deeper lying midfielder. Just hasn't been replaced in the squad after all.

Yep that's our top lineup.

Have we given up trying Bindon at L or R back? Still scared having Payne and FDV as our top options.

I imagine Bindon will start both games at LCB, as long as he's training half decent. Hasn't played for a few weeks so will be fresh as a daisy. Tommy there to give him some worldly sage advice, plus a confidence boost if he's a bit down on the situation at The Blades.

Surman & Boxall have the long haul post the Oslo game back Stateside. Important MLS final round 19th Oct ('Decision Day'). As per the Sept window can see them rotating a match each in this window. That's unless Stanger gets a start in a game.

FDV and Payne haven't been pulled away from their ALM clubs not to start.

I’d be stunned if OPP gets put on the wing if he gets on. Him and Just are similar but OPP is not a wide player at all. I see him coming on into the No10 if anything or for maybe one of the deeper midfielders.

Is the Tommy Smith call up a waste? Yes, I know he has been a great warrior to the All Whites but at 35 yo and playing in the national league, did Daze miss an opportunity here?

The All Whites already have a senior player in Boxall who can give great advice to WC playing condition in the US.
If I was a defender/midfielder looking to get into the WC squad, I'd be p*ssed *ff.

Smith is picked because he is Woodsy's mate not because of his leadership qualities

It’s a funny old time for Bindon, but there’s now 3 CBs starting at a higher level than him, given he’s on the bench.

Crowd Goes Wild briefly mentioned the game and ran an interview with Lewandowski asking what character he was from Lord of the Rings, but he doesn't care for the movies, lol

TVNZ coverage starts at 735am. Will there be two different commentary's available? Will Rory be back?

Seems like we are wedded to the 4-2-3-1, no space for Bell. Will we ever get to see a Bell Stamenic Thomas midfield?

This might not be a bad idea holding Wood, Bell, and Old back. In the previous windows against Aussie we came unstuck with our comparative lack of firepower off the bench.

About 10 Aotearoa supporters will sadly be on a 12-hour delayed flight to Katowice while the game is on.  I mished it from Luton to Heathrow to get the only feasible flight to make the game and am currently hooning it from Krakow airport to Katowice to try and make it in by the ten-minute mark.  Thanks Wizz Air.

This has cost me an arm and two legs so we better not get smashed.  COYAW.

Don’t understand the Waine selection at all.

Wood should be starting and playing at least 60 mins. The games in Europe and he doesn’t need to undertake tough travel.

If he wants to see how the team would go with no Wood, then play McCowatt up front at 9.

Waine will not be in the starting team irrespective of Woods availability come the World Cup.

Auckland will rise once more

Possibly the last chance Waine gets in an AW's jersey to prove his worth, he's not doing it a club level currently.
