Does the Stamenic withdrawal change Bazeleys thoughts regarding Thomas' involvement this window. With an adjustment in personal/positioning required coukd he be getting more minutes than orginally planned?

Absolutely ripper night of NZ sport with Warriors final game of the season and then the soccer ashes back to back. Been targeting this one for a while. This afternoon is going to go by so slowly at work!

Yeah Stamenic out definitely changes everything. As per AV's article he is 2nd only to Libby, re mins played by any AW under Baze. Both big outs.

Thomas's return very very timely, esp when Rufer will be far from full match sharpness.

Socceroos record in Canberra is strong, but they usually play an AFC minnow there. And AWs record is very good at Mt Smart, which brings hope for next Tuesday.

Not sure if the below article quite has the eligibility facts correct re Jack Iredale. The spelling of his surname certainly raises eyebrows straight away. We now have our own SPL playing CB in Stanger developing nicely anyway.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/09/05/lets-bring-home-the-ashes-says-darren-bazeley/

Australia have a strong record when playing in Canberra, winning five of their six matches in the nation’s capital, and averaging 3.8 goals per game.

Australia go into Friday’s game looking to extend their unbeaten run to nine games.

Head to head, the trans-Tasman rivals have met 65 times, with Australia winning 41 times, compared to New Zealand’s 13 wins. Eleven games have been drawn.

Squad changes
Midfielder Marko Stamenić has withdrawn from the New Zealand squad due to tightness in his adductor muscles, which he experienced during training. He’s left the New Zealand camp in Canberra to return to his Swansea City club.

The Socceroos have lost defender Fran Karacic to injury and replaced his with uncapped Jack Ireland, a player who was eligible for New Zealand but has opted to play for Australia.

Fire up 🔥 !

Stamenic was our in form shining light, but Bell and Thomas are probably our next best two.

Clever thinking on the flanks will probably be required and it’s unlikely Payne will have two poor performances in a row.

But more importantly how will Just, McCowatt and Wood go without Libby? And will we see Sarpreet? Can we perform well enough to stop Garbett returning to the starting team next window now he’s back playing to some good reviews?

Come on the Kiwis!

What are we trying to do calling LBS, add a stat for youngest player to compete with AUS or win the game. Are you telling me he is the next best player in NZ. Makes me wonder if Baz has other influences in team selection. I think the sooner Baz goes the better for NZ. I am sure you will have lots to say after tonight games. Let’s see if I am correct.😣

Brooke-Smith literally is the next best available wide attacking option beyond the eight originally in the squad and Matt Garbett.

Really you cant see the benefit of introducing a very promising young player into the squad. These sorts of games are perfect for introducing young guys into the squad. Can only be good for his development to be around guys like Wood,Thomas,Bell etc who hasnt probably had much to do with before. Gotta just shake your head at times at some comments.

Typical australia move to include this Jack chap. Like don't pick him for 10 years.. then cap tie him in the game against us. Such a d&ck move haha

Jack Iredale was ultimately not eligible to play for New Zealand is my understanding.

It's a friendly so pretty sure Iredale won't be cap tied. And from memory he was in the Socceroos wider training squad recently based in the Middle East, before the Japan & Saudi games in June.

Also think the article has it wrong and he ain't actually eligible for NZ. Him and NZF did apparently look into it. Pragnell an ex judoka being mates with his ex NZ judo Olympian mum.

Yes you are right, it would take 3 friendly appearances to be cap tied or 1 appearance at a World Cup (not qualifiers) or Continental tournament (OFC Nations Cup, Euros, Asian Cup etc.)

Edit: Actually think it is more than 3 matches of which one must be a competitive match rather than a friendly. I've gotten myself all confused over this rule again - so probably just disregard this whole post because I dont trust myself on this at all 🤣

Still an Alpha move though. They must know he's been mentioned before.

Well who cares... I'm picking a 2-2 draw.

Would take a draw with a couple of goals scored by us in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, not to get too disappointed and based upon our coach and two of our best players missing,  I’m picking 1-0 to the Australians.

Auckland will rise once more

2-1 Aussie, with Irankunda to bang in a spectacular rocket. Part of me wouldn't mind seeing that.

But the AWs to get a win at Mt Smart.

Am I right in saying the Soccer Ashes is like the Bledisloe Cup in that the holder only has to win 1 game in order to retain?

It'd be great if we can get a draw or win to keep the trophy on the line for game 2 (Let alone for the fact it'd just be great to get a result against them for once!)

Series still alive even if the AWs lose tonight.

What’s needed to claim the Ashes Trophy

To bring home the trophy, the All Whites need to win the series on the aggregate score of both games.

If the aggregate score is level at full-time in Auckland, the trophy will be decided by a penalty shootout.

It’s an aggressive move.
This ‘alpha, beta etc etc’ male business really has no biological basis. It’s a TikTok/podcast thing.

Human hierarchies are more complicated than other animals.

Aggression doesn’t necessarily translate to the most dominant or important for survival. Or the best leadership qualities. Otherwise I’d get a lot more respect on this forum!

Iredale has been in the wider Socceroos conversation for a few years. Injuries have held him back. Seems he's a regular starter now at Hibs, and I guess playing well. Poppa has a number of defenders, incl Karacic last minute out so he picks him.

I doubt looking to be alpha, beta, or whatever comes into it at all.

Australia I'm guessing have well over 50 players overseas outside the ALM playing at a decent level. Maybe closer to 100. They have picked 24 alone for this window. Both Poppa and Arnold before him have cast the net wide. Plenty of guys that have had a few caps, then never been picked again. A bit like the AWs in Hudson's era, except his picks often came from 3rd tier Holland, Thailand or the Handy Prem as he tried to uncover a gem

Payne & Sail really do seem inseparable, from these NZF social updates.

Through the thick & thin, of a drunken night out on the golf buggies and a hospital backpass in Barcelona against the Peruvians. A proper bromance.

Anyone know if this will still be on FIFA+, and if not how to watch it from outside NZ (i.e. the UK)?

The link for Game 2 (New Zealand v Australia | Men International Friendly) is live, but the link for today's match is dead: 404 - Not Found
Should be on Fifa+ but maybe game 1 is only on it in NZ since Aussie are producing the broadcast, so you may need a VPN set to NZ to make it work

Edit: Yeah the game 1 link appears to work if 'you are in NZ' if you know what I mean

Not sure what Football Australia's rights situation is like in the UK, but where they haven't sold rights they usually broadcast home internationals on YouTube.

He certainly has a point to prove. Attitude was terrible in last Aussie Cup match (almost elitist) so keen to see him apply himself and fire up. Hes capable and wasnt able to show it last year for the nix. Just wonder how wing-back fit he is..

intersting to hear craig foster (one of the best interviews ever btw w ange https://youtu.be/GWGNPFI-MtE?si=GYAtPBF8BPAd3qi0 ) say that in the 90s they had 300 overseas.

That interview has aged very well..
