Predicable.  Raises the question though on signing Stephen Old for WP and not Ben Sigmund. Also Mossy getting the nod for WP but not the all whites?

Looks like a strong squad. Hopefully James, Nelsen, and Killen all get to play.

I thought this was interesting considering the great form moss has been in to keep out paston from his return from injury.

Does Riki see this as an opportunity to get paston some game time

Have the set the kick-off times for any of the October and November games yet? The http://www.nzsoccer.com/page/2007_fixtures.html page is appallingly light on information.

How come the A-League doesn't observe the international fixture calendar?

Aha - found it:

2007

October 13 v Fiji, North Harbour Stadium, 4pm
October 17 v Fiji in Fiji (venue tbc)

November 17 v Vanuatu, Port Vila (tbc)
November 21 v Vanuatu, Westpac Stadium, 7pm

You would think this information would justify inclusion in the fixtures page itself though...

I'd still like to know the times for the away games if anyone knows.

I must admit I find some of the selections a bit strange, especially the keepers.

At the moment Mossy is apparently the #1 keeper at the nix. And Paston is #2. Ricki has decided this.

As National coach he selects the best team he can. He has already decided that Moss is better than paston at the moment so why hasn't been picked?

Or has Mossys gaff on the weekend got him demoted at the nix and therefore the AW's too?

Apparently the Fiji game is LIVE on TV1. You wouldn't dream it, but apparently it's true.

Three for me, and two for them.

Well slap my thighs and call me shirley...

I was just about to email Sky to ask why they haven't listed the games in the October Skywatch. Guess I don't need to worry now.

Where did you see that news? Is it both legs?

I saw that news on teletext, no idea how reliable it is they have got info wrong before but it was in capital letters as if they are sure it will be shown live on TV1.

Only stated that it was for our home leg SiNZ.

Three for me, and two for them.

The reason that Moss was over looked for Paston I think is simple.

1: Which game(s) would you perceive as harder: All Whites vs 3rd world island nations or Phoenix vs experienced Australian teams?

If you picked the Phoenix games as being harder, then why put Paston in goal for the Phoenix when he has no game time and would potentially have a tougher time of it than say against the Islanders. What better way to let Paston get some game time and back into the rhythm against teams that are 'non-threatening' and less likely to test him and let him find his groove naturally. Also why upset the Phoenix combinations??

Also if you take Steven Old, who is going to play at the back with Christie and Lockhead in the All Whites team? That leaves the Phoenix with a back 4 of Old, O'Dor, Dodd, Cleberson.....

It's irrelevant which game is harder. The All Whites are the National team where our best in each position should be playing. In theory any game that Nelsen plays in the EPL is far far tougher than what the AW's will play against in Oceania and he is still (apparently) coming for the games.

I agree with that Jeremiah. However, it should be noted that the EPL has no scheduled games on a designated international. Nelsen does not have to miss one play in the other.

It is a bit of a conflict of interest though. Isnt it?

Ricki really has to do some juggling and make comprises for both teams, which is fair enough for the whole of NZ football I suppose.

If Moss played for who ever the Phoenix are playing that weekend, I am pretty sure he would have been called up for the All Whites this game ;)

If we build it, they will come...

I didn't realise it was a full break, bad example.

How about Bertos then, the Auckland are completely fcuked without him, so that's a harder game.

The Auckland?

Really, the A-League should align their calendar with the designated international calendar. Surely there are enough All Whites and Socceroos in the A-League to justify it.

The difference between Blackburn and The Phoenix is that Blackburn are not a 'NZ outfit' Sure we follow them but in the scheme of it, the Phoenix and All Whites are more important to NZ Football than any other team if you follow my political license for that phrase.

Bertos plays for Perth. Who gives a sh*t about Perth? We do however give a sh*t about how the Phoenix AND the All Whites do.

As Londonchris said, Ricki has to juggle both so why not try and get the best outcome for both teams so that both have a chance of winning and not just handicapping one to suit the other.

Interesting:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/Sport/Change-to-ALeague-finals-schedule/2007/10/01/1191091020002.html

The A-League finals are being rescheduled to accommodate the Socceroos' World Cup qualification match on February 6.

FFA chief executive officer Ben Buckley said the move was necessary as the original A-League schedule would have had the World Cup match fall in the middle of the finals.

The semi-finals originally set for the 1st and 3rd of February will now be played on the 8th and 10th.

The A-League Preliminary Final will be on February 17 with the Grand Final now scheduled for Sunday, February 24.

Also, isn't Paston the AW's incumbent ?  He was injured in the match against Wales and that injury kept him out of the Phoenix squad.

Moss would have to displace him, not the other way around.

It wouldn't be surprising if he has spoken to both keepers about it before time and got them both on side. I also wouldn't be surprised to see both of them rotated through the All Whites....

And Pelter?
I know his young but's his a great defender...

Don't think he has really 'proven' himself yet.

Canterbury United to Sunderland reserves in 6 months. Needs a little more time to bed in possibly and show if he has the goods or has gotten lucky. He's also have to be better than Lockhead, who is on fire at the moment

It will be good to see the All Whites on TV again, being on free to air TV might encourage even more people to tune in and watch.

Presumaby that NZ v Fiji entry on the 18th is not a repeat of the first game (a la Sky), but the Fiji v NZ leg?

I'll ask them and while I'm at it, I will congratulate them on showing the games.

On the occassions I've seen them Boxall has looked a better defender than Pelter anyway.

Also, I see 'Soupy' Campbell is at Auckland City now, not Waitakere.

If TV 1 are showing the All Whites game, does that mean it's not going to be on sky? If it's only on TV 1 I would watch it albeit reluctantly due to the fact that im boycotting that channel.

If TV1 are showing football, why are we boycotting them to get them to show the football....

The Fiji - NZ game is at 6pm, according to the NZF site. TV1 are showing a game at 10:35pm that day, so are presumably showing Fiji-NZ on delay... This is why I prefer my football on Sky. The terrestial channels tend to only show things live if it doesn't clash with established programming. We get the home game live because it is a Saturday afternoon, but an early evening mid-week game is not live. Let Sky have the game!
