Anyone remember "Chinese Taipei"

Hi everyone:

I've been watching some of the old AW's footage from the '82 campaign.  Why on earth were Taiwan called "Chinese Taipei" when everywhere else they were called Taiwan?  I seem to remember it was for political reasons, but why would anyone working for TVNZ (or indeed anyone else in NZ) care about that?

They're called Chinese Taipei at the Olympics as well. It would be to with something about China not recognising them as a soveriegn nation I would presume.

Now, Japanese Taipei is a different matter altogether....

Thanks, everyone.  I forgot about Wikipedia, but as you can guess from the fact that I even remember the AW '82 campaign, I'm not a member of the internet generation!

A sign of the times, not having Taiwan play mainland China and having Israel in our zone to avoid them playing the Arab nations.  Sixty year laters China stil calls it a province but the "real politic" is that they are a separate country.
Good match 2 nil I think, sunny autumn day.  It looked like a 15 to 20,000 crowd.

Yeah, I think that match was live on TV as well.  We played Taiwan/Chinese Tapei in 4 or 5 WCQ campaigns, but the only time we actually played our "away" fixture against them in Taiwan itself was in that '82 WCQ tournament when we drew 0-0 there.  That match was also the first time we wore the all white strip.

All the other "away" matches against them were played in NZ.  Christchurch was used in 86, Wellington in '90 & Auckland in '78.  I went to both of the Wellington games in December 1988 because I think tickets for both games were at a discount if you paid for both upfront.

About Israel, we had some good matches against them, especially the home game in '86 when we took them apart.  We lost the return game in Israel, but by then we were already out because we'd lost to Oz the week before & they went through to the next round, so I wonder how committed our lads were over in Israel for that game.

Israel actually played in the European WCQs in 1982 (in Scotland's group) & went back there in 1994.

I still remember NZ kicking off that 82 campaign with a 3-3 draw with Ausse. Richard Wilson playing in every game yet dumped at the finals for Van Hattum. He should have been given some finals game time for doing the job over about 17 qualifying games.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Fully agree.  It's still a mystery why Adshead dropped Wilson.  He said Wilson wasn't the "form" player after the friendlies against Ireland & Watford, which I suppose can explain why he didn't play in the first 2 games in Spain, but he could have him played in the last match against Brazil.  Let's face it, we weren't going to get a result against them, were we?

There was some talk a few years ago that one of van Hattum's relatives bribed Adshead $14,000 to pick van Hattum instead of Wilson.  There's a chapter about all this in Sam Malcolmson's book on the '82 campaign ("All Whites 82") called "The Fall of King Richard" which deals with it.

Apparently, a few of the players feel bad about Wilson not playing at least once, although they didn't want to say anything at the time in case they lost their places.  I also got the impression that Kevin Fallon didn't like Wilson, even though you'd have thought that Wilson was his type of player, i.e. intense, fully committed etc.  Fallon blamed Wilson for Kuwait's equaliser in the 2-2 draw, because it looked at the time as if that had cost us qualification.

Anyway, it's a shame that RW didn't play in the WC itself after he did so much to get us there.

I've got the book on the campaign written by Adshead in Fallon, IIRC the reason stated in it was Van Hattum looked sharper in training. I might have another look later on.

Pretty poor really. I recall Sam Malcomson getting the nod for the Scotland game and the talk about how it was an honour being a Scot etc etc, but he certainly wasn't picked on form for that game. Did he play in any other games anyone?

He came off after 78 minutes in that first game and didn't play against Russia or Brazil.

The first-choice CB pairing right throughout qualifying was Herbert and Almond....not sure why they broke that up for the game against Scotland.

Ireland?

They played very strong Hungary twice after the WCQ playoffs against China and lost 1-2 twice in Feb 1982.

And it was a strong Watford side wasn't it?

Anyway, I remember about Van Hattum taking over Richard Wilson at the time and was absolutely gutted. I thought that Richard Wilson had all you need for a GK but couldn't get my head around Van Hattum playing instead, he was OK with strength and weakness like a strong kick and reflexes but had weaker defensive communication or control over his box compared to Richard Wilson. I felt more comfortable with Richard but not with Frank.

I was quite gutted as a 10 year old that I never saw Richard get on the field in Spain. He was my hero of the whole campaign. Fancy having not conceded a goal in 921 minutes of soccer in the WCQ and not get a game in the WC finals. Most times that Frank didn't save, I would think Richard would have saved that, it was hard not to think that as a 10 year old.AllWhitebelievr2009-06-14 02:42:47

There were friendly matches in May 82 against the League of Ireland (i.e. amateurs/semi-pros, not the full-time pros like Liam Brady, Frank Stapleton etc.) & Watford.  Agreed, Watford were strong, as they'd just been promoted to the old 1st Division & would go on to finish as League runners-up the next season.

However, the point is that the matches were friendlies, not competitive fixtures, so I wonder how justified it is to judge a player on "form" so close to the WC itself in these type of fixtures.  After all, a consideration players might have is not to suffer injury, so therefore not go all out in terms of effort etc. so as not to miss the tournament because of injury.

Grant Turner suffered an injury which put him out of the WC a few days before it started, & he was a very inportant player for us.  In fact, he was one of our best in the qualifying, & we might have got a point against either Scotland or the USSR if he had been playing.

Anyway, it seems harsh that RW got dropped for his "form" in games where there were no points at stake & yet his form in WCQ counted for nothing at the WC itself.  He didn't play in any other WC campaign either, so that was it for him.  A terrible shame.

That isn't why he was dropped.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
