Pointless argument. As Stupid as the people who get angry at those who call it Soccer.

Knowing the ODT I'm unsure if Jag's response (if sent as above) would be printed. They are kinda conservative. **Oops, see edit below

So yeah just flood them (one each, not spam) with responses and see how many get printed. Out of towners might get priority as they will be impressed that you have read their content from out of Dunedin.

When letters get printed can be a bit variable (and delayed).

Edit: I have my wires crossed. I thought some other reply was Jag's response.

Nice one Jag, looks good ahmad2009-11-18 23:41:43

guys, i'm afraid to inform you that the certain mr mcdonald who wrote that letter is a bit of a running joke in dunedin - a munter, formerly involved in politics and stuff, who everyone has a bit of a laugh at, for taking life way too seriously and continuously writing tripe into the odt because he has nothing better to do with his day.

in fact, perhaps he is just an old skool troll who hasn't quite got with the interweb yet, and perhaps he's having the last laugh. i don't know. barely worth the time and effort though.

Thanks for that info, I don't follow the politics of the Opinions page of the ODT

But really to leave things like this unchallenged is just wrong, and keeping up the profile on football can't be a bad thing.

Cant be bothered reading thread.

but what,so his point is that everyone has the right to use the term "football" except us? Illogical argument.

You could say rugby isnt football, its rugby, just as much as you can say "soccer" isnt football, its "soccer" (if you get what i mean )

Allegedly

If someone said football to me, I definitely would NOT think they were talking about Rugby.

Has this buffoon not noticed that the F in NZF also stands for football?

Peter Sharp and Brendan Telfer were talking about this on Radio Sport today, Sharp saying that soccer comes from Association and was a name developed by some English captain way back when

I found the initial correspondent's email address, and sent him a link to this thread, in the hope he could continue his debate in a reciprocal forum.

"Soccer true game of foot" - Headline above Letters to the Editor in Otago Daily Times today concerning Alan McDonald's attempt to divert attention away from the greatest football achievement in NZ for 27 years.

I SYMPATHISE with Alan McDonald's sentiment that all the other games are forms of football. However, it must be clarified that the game of rugby historically sprang from a rebellious group of footballers, who could not agree with a new set of rules, supported by the majority of players and clubs, which aimed to reduce ongoing tendencies for indiscriminate property damage, injury, and death experienced during the hitherto mob-propelled game. While this wayward group of sportsmen preferred to perpetuate practices of shin kicking, tripping and carrying the ball, the newly formed Football Association forbade any handling of the ball.

While it could be argued that rugby may represent football in its most original form, one cannot deny that the Football Association rules immortalised soccer as the true ball game of the foot.

Cath

ALAN McDonald believes that we should continue to copy the Americans in referring to "football" as "soccer". The truth is that well over 90% of the world uses the term "football". It is the accepted international term for the game. I can understand the Americans using "soccer" but this is only because they have an existing game they refer to as "football".

Rather than "soccer people arrogantly forcing the term on us", we should be happy to play in the Fifa (sic) World Cup, rather than use a term that is seen as an American comedy name for the world sport.

Tim

Sorry Jag, the best letter wasn't printed, at least not today. That first letter was more long-winded that you claimed yours was, and Tim's last sentence doesn't even make sense. Not only that, the "Odt" didn't recognise "Fifa" as an acronym.
