No game. Confirmed.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/soccer-football/news/article.cfm?c_id=86&objectid=10618467

A World Cup warm-up soccer match between New Zealand and Australia has been ruled out.

New Zealand Football (NZF) chairman Frank van Hattum urged the Socceroos to consider a pre-tournament bragging-rights game after the two sides learned their fates for the finals in South Africa.

However, NZF chief executive Michael Glading told Radio Sport there was no chance of the match eventuating as Australia's schedule heading into the June tournament was already full.

A clash against Mexico in Los Angeles on March 3 has already been confirmed, and Glading said preparations for New Zealand's World Cup build up were almost complete.

The club was waiting for several European countries to confirm warm-up matches in May, following the team's altitude training in Europe.

New Zealand secured their place in this year's finals with a 1-0 aggregate win over Bahrain in November.

They face Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay in the group stage.

As part of the World Cup build up I'm looking to head out to LA to see the Mexico Game, if anyone else is going to the game let me know.

Cheers,

What's the capacity at the rosebowl?

Permalink Permalink

Capacity is just over 100,000. The last time Mexico played an international friendly their they had 50,000 turn up.

Some great reading here, well done NZH (Never thought I'd say that tbh)

Two week training camp in Austria, hoping to play two games, Serbia is a likely oppositiion for one.  England also mentioned, but seems more out of hope than actual likelihood.

Looks like a good plan for the meanwhile.

1. Mexico friendly
2. Two Australasian player-based games in April after A-league season is over.
3. Two Austria training camp matches; (possible) Serbia, (possible) Slovenia
4. A (possible European/South America opponent) game in South Africa leading into the Tournament. The possible chances are that it would be Germany. It would be a good run for the legs and less media speculation for us than for Germany.

Six game in all. Sounds like a reason world cup preparation.

The only problems I could see is that one or two of the Australasian player-based games may not be against South America opponents as it looks a game or two thin that side of the preparation. Definitely need a second South American oriented prep game. Uruguay, Chile and Argentina looks to be prime pickings but they may not like having Australasian based players. Surely we can fly some of our Euro-based players across the Atlantic ocean.AllWhitebelievr2010-01-12 01:03:55

Would love to go over for the game.  I know grabaseat have done $125 return tickets to LA and San Francisco in the past so if I were to get one of those tickets in the right time-frame I'd go for sure.  Otherwise not, unfortunately.

Over at the big soccer forums, Mexican fans are fuming, that they could only get New Zealand for a world cup warm up, they dont rate us all, perhaps we should remind them of 1980.

Both Qantas and Air NZ have $1600 return fares for around that time. If you leave Akl Tuesday 2nd of March and return the week later. Sales end 25 January. Im so tempted, esp since I have accommodation (brother lives there) but at the same time it's hard to part with that much money in one hit.

Why is the media making it out that "NZ lost this game to Australia". Why the competition? Don't get it.

Because both teams wanted the friendly on the same date (thus 'competing' for it) and Aussie got the fixture.?

According to this, in a Scottish paper, the All Whites are lining up a warm-up game against Scotland

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Interesting - the Scots were asking for big $$$ to come and play here. From what I could gather, though, NZF would be happy to play them in Europe, or even here if they cut their financial demands a bit.

Is that the day you drew 0-0 with the Faroe Islands?

Three for me, and two for them.
