CHANGE OF RULING - away goals in extra-time

Hi all,

Just had it confirmed by Michael Glading that contrary to previous posts on this, FIFA have ruled that away goals WILL have significance in extra-time.

The only way it can go to extra-time is a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.

Then, if it's a score-draw (1-1, 2-2 etc) after extra-time, Bahrain go through.

If it's 0-0 after extra-time, it's penalties.

Sorry to be professor knowsnothingaboutfootball over here (blame the media) but what's the deal normally with extra time? This is how I assumed it always worked.

Previously away goal rule (i.e. goals scored away from home worth double) only applied to the regulation 90min + added time.

Which seems more fair because we only got 90 minutes to score an away goal.
Technically now Bahrain have 30 minutes more to do that, and that seems to unlevel the playing field.

Frustrating, but let's face it, we were never keen for a score draw after extra-time anyway. Penalties are an absolute nightmare for any side - lets win it in normal time.

I feel sick to my stomach about this, there should be outrage, if they have just changed the rules, our media and football NZ need to go nuts, we need to threaten legal action, this f**kin sucks.

This is pathetic. I refer to the whinging on this forum. What are you saying, you don't back the mighty All Whites to win this game in 90 minutes?

I understand that this ruling lessens by some tiny margin our chances, but really, I would prefer to see the game settled by a Bahraini away goal in extra time than a damned penalty shoot. Penalty shoots are IMHO one of the worst things about football, and I've always said they should be replaced by "golden goal".

This forum needs less angst and more Kate Bush threads

I cannot believe there isnt outrage from the media or nz football over this. Im even surprised at the lack of outrage here on yellowfever.

Simple, the AW's can't let this get to them - basically have to put the ball in the net twice quickly and then "relax" a little. don't play for the 0 - 0 (that woudl be suicide). After the nix game, we should be on a bit of a high - so don't get hung up about the rule "change". It'll be all right on the night

Is this the rule that will be followed in every other FIFA 2010 World Cup play-off around the world?

If so, pointless complaining.

We can appeal this decision by FIFA.

Its actually a change in the rule.

FIFA can do quite frankly whatever the f**k they want.

Unfortunate but true.

No point getting hung up on it. Both teams scoring in extra time is a pretty rare occurance.

What about penalties?

Do away goals also count in the penalty shoot out?

Oh my god! We're so f**ked!! We're being screwed!!! Outrage!!!!

Kind of agree that is sucks that if it goes to extra time they have more time to score an away goal, but if you look at it another way - we get to play extra time at home, which would you  prefer?

let's just win it in normal time, make this argument irrelevant.

I always thought that was the rule, i assumed we had to just win!!!

and we wil.....l

this is in the AW's hands they will win, OR they will Loose. Bahrain is not in control.

From FIFA.com regarding the European playoffs.

The team scoring more goals on aggregate wins the play-off. If the scores are level on aggregate, away goals count double. If the teams are level on away goals, or if both matches end goalless, extra-time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played at the end of the second match. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner.

That sounds to me like if a game there ends 0-0 and then 0-0 again they will play extra time and the goals will not count double. So 1-1 after extra time would be penalties.
Surely the rules shoiuld have been in place before the first game.

Id be very keen to have a crack at this on Hand of God, but I want to be clear about the facts. At a glance it seems the rules for our fixture are the exception, which would be a disgrace.

What do we know for sure?
- European qualifiers (extra time away goals will not count for double)
- it is contrary to FIFA's own regulations for SA 2010 as Sanday has pointed out.

What else? that is shocking.

I have had time to have a closer look .

On the one hand it says: the goals scored away will be counted as double.

Then it says: or both matches end without any goals being scored, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played. If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner.

This last one applies to us.To me that says if it is 1-1 after extra time it is penalties. So did they change the rule?

Surely the same rules should apply to all the world cup play off games.

this is the only question that matters, as both you and Sanday say - is the rule being 'interpreted' differently for our game?

and did Labour Weekend mean NZF failed to protest in time?  (joke - i assume)

look, thinking about it, yes, if you had a good lawyer you could argue there is wriggle room for interpretation. but it is a very fundamenatl and basic point. if they intended away goals to be a tie breaker in extra time they should have said so. they didnt. if they have left it grey to allow themselves to interpret as convenient that is a disgrace.

Actually, this is how it always is - but there was some confusion earlier last week when some numpty from FIFA said that away goal rule wouldn't be applied if the game went to extra time.
