Glading said midfielder Simon Elliott had undergone a knee operation and had been ruled out, along with Leo Bertos, Mark Paston and Jeremy Christie.

Winston Reid is unavailable for the China game because of suspension, while fellow defender Ben Sigmund will miss the Japan game as he is getting married on April 2.

Add to that list Craig henderson who is still recovering from his injury, there are only 25 players to choose from so only 3 will miss out. Also David Mulligan is currently on trial in China and might get signed next week just ahead of the first game.
After that if Herbert would like to try a 4-3-3, Herbert could play Sigmund as a right back vs China and Fitzgerald(who is half japanese) vs Japan.

Michael Fitzgerald half Japanese!

His mother and father would be very interested to know how that happened.

Is his mother not Japanese?

I said that based on this article...

Michael James Fitzgerald ("Michael James") is a young New Zealander who has lived in Japan for quite a while. I dont know the exact details of how he arrived here but I do know that he was here from an early age (ie, a minor). But the most important point is that he does not belong to Zweigen Kanazawa. He is an Albirex Niigata player who has been loaned to Zweigen to give him experience. So although he might be getting some sort of compensation direct from Zweigen, I am fairly sure that he is being paid by Albirex.

Michael James is half New Zealander, half Japanese. He attended school in Japan. He keeps connections to his New Zealand nationality as he would be MUCH more likely to be called to that national team than Japan's, but would consider taking Japanese nationality at any time as opposed to having a "child of Japanese national" visa that allows him more or less a normal life in Japan.

Maybe he just has a Japanese Passport hence confusion.

Don`t go upsetting his Mum by all of this talk that he is half Japanese, she can be a very aggressive lady
Plus his Dad will be devastated

Looks like it probably wont go ahead now with Japan having rolling blackouts.

edit - Heard that on Radio Live but have not actually been able to find any evidence of this on any of several NZ news websites, jfa.or.jp or nzfootball.co.nz

rj big earthquakes like that can trigger other earthquakes on seperate fault lines elsewhere, both seismologists and nutters will tell you that. Please do some research.

Game is going ahead.

It would seem so. Not sure where Radio Live got their information from.

With Paston out, that almost gaurantee's that Jake Gleeson will make the final squad as back up to Mossy. Will be good experience for him.

Tokyo is 400 kms away from the epicenter and the same faultline will not result in a deadly quake in Tokyo. No seismologist can tell you with certainty exactly what the odds are. Yes this could have heightened stress (or equally relieved it) between the three way plate intersection that could cause a devastating quake in Tokyo. But the odds of this happening while the All Whites would be there are still extremely low. Please drop the condescending tone.
Please enlighten us all on your credentials for these proclamations. I work professionally in this field and I would not make the sweeping statements you have made on this list.

I for one, am so pumped to see my boys again..

Love watching the Whites...  Don't care how we play, know it will always be entertaining

Hope the likes of Wood, Kosta, Rojas, Lowe (?), Gleeson get some good game time between them

If MFAT are recommending not going it makes it difficult to justify. Probably also creates all sorts of complications around players' insurance etc.

NZF making a statement after 3pm today.  if they can't play japan in Japan, why not play them in China.  Easier said than done and they've probably thought of it but it would be good.

Or consider moving it down to the south west.

Yet to be confirmed for Sky but I think we can safely assume there will be zero chance of free to air coverage.

Oh, good. This game had better go ahead, even if they have to shift it to Okinawa.

Happy that they are moving the match further south, hope this is genuinely safer for our footballers.
In the next 10 days the Japanese are hosting a fair slice of our men's footballing future...fingers crossed.

New Zealand Football (NZF) wishes to advise that NZF and the Japan Football Association (JFA) will make media announcements at 8.30pm (NZT) tonight with regard to the All Whites international friendly match with Japan scheduled for Osaka, on March 29, 2011. NZF has respectfully observed a JFA request to delay any further comment about the match until this time and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Good call from NZF,given the uncertainties around disaster recovery and particularly the nuclear risk. Meaningful games now an even more pressing issue this year though.
