Killen?

Oh yeah forgot him. How old will he be?

Tom this is this the Chinese squad with an eye to 2014, or some pointless 2014 world cup squad prediciton. For starters you've named Luke Rowe. Based on what? Ever seen him play? You don't have any of the Olympic squad, the likes who will have developed a heck of a lot in three years. Craig Henderson playing in Sweden. How about the young guys in the US? Might be MLS starters in three years. Michael Boxall, Dan Keat, Jake Gleeson. I would be very worried if no one comes in and overtakes Siggy in three years. Also, Boyens should not be there.

you have picked Rojas based on a few games in his debut season as a youngster. I wonder if someone will do that next year? or the following one? and add to the list.

And Daniel? You're having a laugh surely. More realistic to add Vince Lia in there, and that aint gonna happen!

Yeah gotta admit I dont know much about the overseas players I only know that Rowe plays with Birmingham(?)so he must be a decent player, or should be one in the future if coached well. But I was just sorta guessing on who I know or who i've heard(Rowe)would be around there looking for starting spots. Oh and didnt know Lia was eligible??

He's not, yet. But I don't want Daniel anywhere near the All Whites squad.

Luke Rowe is just in the Birmingham reserves isn't he? So same level Chris James used to be at.

Correct , wynton did say that. I do get a little sick of those out there who think conspiracy theories everytkme wynton talks. I think he deserves more respect. If he says the guy is good and worth a go that is good enough for me.

Those who rate spoonley, are having a laugh. A number of years ago he was 3rd choice at the Phoenix and now has progressed to our premiership. If Herbert rates crowther above him then that must say something

I find it hard to listen to someone who only talks about players that have been through his academy.  Hardly a neutral opinion.

According to the FIFA rules Lia will never be able to represent NZ because he didnt have any link with NZ when he represented Australia U20. The same situation happened for Mikel Arteta of Everton who wasn t allowed to represent England even with the 5 years residency

Daniel is eligible to represent NZ next year because he never played for Brazil

but at least it means he's seen him at close quarters

the guy was Oceania player of the century and if he says he's good then that's ok by me - especially when the next cab of the rank is spooney!AucklandPhoenix2011-01-07 17:05:33

Or Gleeson, or someone yet to emerge. Third string in a semi-pro team isn't going to get you selected just because Wynton says you're good.

Someobf yet to emerge? An interesting strategy, gleeson is playing for a youth team in a division Christie plays. Spooner is hardly playing pro football.

Exactly, none of the next breed of keepers at this point are doing anything that screams 'pick me'. If people without bias report back NZF that Marinovic is playing well and deserves a call up and the selectors judge that he is doing better/has more potential right now than the rest of the bunch then by all means pick him. Rufer however is not that unbiased person.

no he's not. he played for the timbers under 23 side which isnt in the same div. theres talk of an mls contract with the timbers now but lets just see if it comes about. no idea why you think herbert needs to rush these guys in. hes already stated that players need to be playing professionally to get in the side and while some positions dont have the depth like others ie GK spoonley has more experience

are you jake gleesons dad?

That was my point, he is playing at the moment at a level below Christie (I.e:youth)

Herbert said today in the herald there will be 5-6 new faces for the China/japan squad.

He obviously appreciates the importance of bringing in new young players

Rojas, Rowe, the German keeper, Barbarous are obvious picks. Maybe Kent would be number 5.

have I missed anyone?

Rojas and Barbarouses are obvious for me. Can you tell me why the others are obvious choices? Purely just because I don't know. Just wondering how much Ricki knows about who etc.

FFS. I know I'm going to regret this, but at least a degree of sanity has to be restored here.

So let's see. Stefan Marinovic. 19 years old, contracted to SV Wehen Wiesbaden until 2012. Made only 2 appearances for the club's first team in the 3. Bundesliga in the season 2009/2010, conceding 7 goals. Most of his playing time comes from the club's second team, playing in the Regionalliga Sud (4th tier of German football). He played in 15 games (less than half the season) in this division in 2009/2010, conceding 23 goals. This season (2010/2011) he's played in 8 games in Regionalliga Sud (again, less than half the games the team's played so far) and conceded 18 goals. So his overall career at the club, playing for both first and second teams, includes 25 games played and 48 goals conceded at hardly a high level of football.

So in summary, the guy who fails to establish himself as a regular starter for the club's second team playing in the 4th tier of German football and who through his career gives up just under two goals a game is clearly the best goalkeeping talent NZ has had in the history of the universe and should be the automatic starter, captain, and penalty taker for the All Whites from tomorrow until the day he dies. Heck, he'll probably be the best keeper we have ever had even then. Rigor mortis and decomposition can't really do much to a talent like this.

Ye gods.

Nah, went with Rojas for PM. Not that it would of made any difference anyway. But that is a discussion for another thread.

A nice well researched article.

For the sake of journalistic integrity can you however give us a dossier on the other contenders?

I suspect it will not make better reading

you did say you will likely regret it!!

aucklandphoenix is stefan marinovic!

can't see there being 5 or 6. rojas and barbarouses sure but itll be from moss, spoonley, reid, nelsen, boyens, old, vicelich, smith, lochhead, sigmund, bertos, brockie, rojas, barbarouses, elliott, mcglinchey, christie, clapham, killen, smeltz, fallon and wood. cant really see him wanting anymore of a squad for two games than that.

maybe he'll count spoonley and old as new faces. perhaps its new faces from the world cup squad

Wynton mentioned him name before the world cup.  He is a former NZ school boys player. He once 'played' for waitakere United and Auckland City but was at least third choice keeper there (behind your man Spoonley).

I'll tell you one thing, Paston is better than Mirinovic [and probably gets paid more]. The Phoenix pay no more than 23 players. How many players at this German club of his?
