I can't think of anyone else other than Winton Rufer...who I think scored some for Werder Bremen in the 1990s, but not 100% on this.
It'd be good for him also if Tampere can repeat the last season's performance and get to the 3rd Quailifying Round.

I THINK this makes him the fouth kiwi to play in the Champions League, and the second to score after Wynton Rufer. Danny Hay and Chris Killen being the other two.

Ah, Danny Hay's famous two minutes at the Nou Camp...

And now he can tell his grandchildren he played against Barcelona in the Champions League.

That is excellent. I am still dissapointed he wont be at the Olympics. but i wont start that discussion in here.

Good luck to Tampere for the away leg on the 23 Jul.

If we build it, they will come...

Many of the teams at this stage are semi pro, let's not blow it out of proportion

Buducnost aren't though. They used to be a mainstay in the old Yugoslav top division (albeit in the lower half of the table), and after a few lean years have come back and are certainly a competent side now.

They played Hajduk last season in UEFA Cup and gave them quite a bit of trouble (1-0 to Hajduk in Split, 1-1 in Podgorica), and while it's true that some of the clubs at this stage of the competition are one short step above from being complete amateurs (especially SS Murata and Santa Coloma this season), that's certainly not true of the opposition that Tampere United has in this round.

Yes, fair points, just want to keep a bit of perspective.

Winston Reid also scored overnight in the UEFA cup first qualifying round.  Playing for a team with no vowels in its name

Didn't Noah Hickey play CL when he was at tampere

Raf may have as well.

Let's not be too negative about playing in this comp either; it's massively high profile, even at this stage and every team, semi pro or not, has won their domestic league.  We're not talking donkeys here.

Tampere is playing the return leg in Podgorica tomorrow morning our time, hopefully he'll be playing.
There may be a gamecast on uefa.com if you're interested, but not 100% on that.el grapadura2008-07-23 11:00:19

Tampere drew 1-1 on the return leg.

I think Chris James played the full 90mins.

They are now through to the next  qualifying round against a Slovakian team Artmedia.

If we build it, they will come...

"Hello to everyone again. The season in Finland is half played (14 out of 26 games for Tampere United), so I thought it might be a good time to report on Chris again.

The season has been pretty bad for the whole team. We took off as one of the favourites but are at the moment laying at 10th out of 14 teams. The table is very even though, and the team has played far better in the last fivr games or so.

Chris didn't get too much time on the field in the first 10 games, apparently our coach thought he's not physically up to it. In the last four games and our first Champions League qualifying games he has taken a position in the first eleven and has been very good. Many of the fans are wondering why he didn't get a chance earlier on.

Chris plays as a box-to-box midfielder and has taken a big role in delivering the ball from the defence to the attackers. He seems to move well and make himself available, which has been a problem for our midfield all season. He takes the teams corners and freekicks when he is on the field and is at the moment our penalty taker as well.

It seems like giving Chris the chance in the opening eleven might still turn our season around as th team has looked very good now that he is playing.

P.S. Chris opened his scoring in the Veikkausliiga (the Finnish premiership) yesterday with a goal from a penalty. Earlier on he has scored for us in the Finnish League Cup and the first Champions League qualifying game against Buducnost Podgorica from Montenegro.

Effectively he now has a goal in all the competitions TamU takes part in except the Finnish cup in which TamU has made it to the quarter finals, so he still has a chance to score."

That's some good news. Pleasing to see that he's bossing the midfield in this comp. He'd be looking to show that he's capable of playing above this competition to set his career up again and try another shot at the bigger leagues and he can't do that without kicking ass at Tampere. Keep it up Chris!

reading the tampere reports, hes playing a central midfield playmaker role. linking the play from the back to the forwards.  i wonder if this means he will fufill this role in the all whites? its just good to see another kiwi stepping up overseas. keep it up James! cheers for the links.

Good to see.  Ok he scored from 2 penalities but he set the second one up with a great run. Hopefully that performance cements his place in their starting XI.

Great  video highlights coverage. James was all over the park!

Wynton indeed scored some for Werder Bremen, the then German champions, in the 93-94 Champions League, maybe the second season of the Champions League format. He in fact was the top-scorer in the Champions League that season with 7 goals I think, including a hat-trick against Anderlecht in a famous 5-3 victory. He also played against Barcelona, the eventual champions that season. He had previously played in the European Cup while playing in Switzerland and scored 10 European Cup/ Champions League goals, one of the top tallies for a player in that era when teams played far fewer European games. Wynton was also top goal-scorer in the German First Division in 92-93 and famously went to the Bremen airport towards the end of that season with his bags packed to fly out to NZ for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Australia on the eve of Bremen's title decider against Bayern Munich, only to be persuaded by the All Whites coach that he had better stay put with Bremen rather than be sacked. Bremen beat Bayern that weekend to clinch the title, thoughn NZ lost to Australia 1-0 in Auckland with Fred de Jong ( then playing in the Dutch First Division) sent off and never playing for NZ again, which always seemed odd considering Fred didn't retire from pro soccer till 2000.

Pretty informative, I'd just like to point out that it was AC Milan who won the Champions League in the 1993/94 season, beating Barcelona 4-0 in Athens.

good luck to him. It think Ricki Herbert was considering him when he did not have a contract at one stage, but it seems that he is doing well so that is good for him.

I dont understand why he would do that. Mabe keeping options open ro switch allegiances? As Fifa states you have to confirm the country you wsh to play for before you are 20 or 21?
