Near the end of this year NZ will be hosting a World Cup and I would doubt it if 5% of the population knew.

The Womens Under 17 World Cup may seem like a small event to us (ie. the NZ public, not ness. those on here) but to put it in perspective 154 countries have already got television rights for every match of the tournament. The RWC in france was beamed to 94.

I know it's still a few months out but this is MASSIVE for NZ and it frustrates me how little the media has mentioned it.

I'm looking forward to it.  Will be really good

I agree though, the media need to get across to people what we are hosting, because if people don't know there won't be crowds, and without crowds it'll be a dud.

I question the decision to play matches in the RoF, Waikato Stadium and to a lesser extent North Harbour, I mean can anyone see them being filled even for knock-out matches?

Don't mean to be negative but it'll look pretty bad on TV if we have 1/4 filled stadiums for the finals of a World Cup.

Surely there were smaller, but more suitable venues in Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland?

PS. Sorry, this post is pretty negative :P

FIFA have a minimum standard on Stadiums and there is nowhere else in Wellington and definitely Hamilton that would come close.

The only other Auckland options would be Mt. Smart and Eden park, and North harbour despite it's drawbacks is the better football stadium.

How did QE2 get in then?

Is there no equivilent to that in other centres?

Just Mt. Smart in Auckland... but that is a city that is much larger.

The only other grounds in Hamilton and Wellington are dedicated Cricket grounds and they aren't that great for football fans.

The media has been covering it. Theres aready been lots in the DomPost. The draw was held on live TV, did you see that for the rugby?
There has been info going out to schools and the games are scheduled so that schools can make up groups of kids and get them to the staduim. Expect a big push as the event gets closer.

In CHCH there has been little or no coverage, except for the live draw.

I don't mean to sound negative, and I'm hoping to get along to a few games but to get 1/4 of the ring of Fire filled for the final is well out of reach isn't it? unless New Zealand was to make the final or something, but i have heard nothing about this except on this website and i bet 90 percent of my rugby loving school would have no idea it is on at all.

Er, I would say so, Scoop, given the final is at North Harbour Stadium ...

Im going to be roundly abused for this but ill just wait and see before im convinced about how big this event will be. I remeber vaguely the u17s in 1999 and remember it being pretty massive but yea i might wait and see on this one. in saying that though i think ill go to watch the kiwi girls when they are in town

Yeah I remember the U-17's in 1999 and it was pretty big alright.

It may be smaller though with some narrowminded people refusing to go because it's womens football (let's hope this won't be the case though).

The NZ team will be playing Colombia at the Westpac Stadium on 4th November which is the final group match. It's a double header with Brazil playing Korea at 4pm and NZ v Colombia at 7pm.
Yellow Fever can play a big part in making sure the football public know about the game and come to support.
There are a few video's on YouTube about the team just type in 'Young Football Ferns'. The team also have a blogsite www.youngfootballferns.blogspot.com.

Theres a huge puish for football clubs in Wellington to sell tickets, I received a pack in the mail today from my club, apparently each club gets a percentage of the ticket sales that the club generates.
Multilyith - your right there are some hotties in the team...

Er, not so, sorry.

The Young Ferns v. Columbia is on at 7pm, but the 4pm clash will be between the runners-up in the yet-to-be-played CONCACAF qualifiers, and the runners-up in the African qualifiers.

This team will be Ghana, if they beat Cameroon this weekend. If the Black Maidens (their nickname) don't win, then either Cameroon or Nigeria will be in Wellington for the 4pm encounter on Melbourne Cup Day.

Is that how the remaining teams will be allocated? Position in qualifying groups?

Ghana and Nigeria are now in, with Nigeria topping qualifying ahead of Ghana. I believe Ghana go in group B and Nigeria in D?

Looking at the CONCACAF final qualifying, in Group A it looks like USA and Trinidad & Tobago will get through to the semi-final stage, but Costa Rica could get in ahead of T&T. In Group B, Canada and Mexico are already in the semis. We will know on 28 July who the final three are. Is it predefined on qualifying finishing order which team goes into which finals group? And if so, what are the rules?

To be fair to PT Kiwi, the NZ-Colombia/Denmark-CONCACAF (A1vA4 A2vA3) matches were originally scheduled for 4pm. (I have a copy of the match schedule pdf downloaded from FIFA in Feb and just checked.)

I hadn't noticed that groups A and B have swapped times for the final matches until you mentioned the 7pm kick-off. I wonder when that happened.

Got tickets for the final coming..
Be the only World Cup level final I get to, not sure it will be so easy (or cheap) to get Rugby WC 2011 tickets...

Disagree with you on this DJ..

Clubs in CHCH have had letters and fliers and badges given out to almost all age groups. There was a stand at the Phoenix game, inside and out. Posters are around town, with coverage in the press. Also, in Hornby - Warren Park, an ad was made for it with Warren park filled up with Womens football (trying to show footy is huge over here)  with competitons and all that. Many U17 staff have come around games on a Sunday as well, to spread the word.

Only having 600 volenteers is a bit worrying though!

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Probably not too long after I gently pointed out to those who needed to know that November 4 is Melbourne Cup day, and the race will be running plum in the middle of the day's first game ...

Hey guys in terms of how the teams are allocated to groups:
We are awaiting the final 3 from CONCACAF which will be completed on 27th July (Sun), we already have the 2 from CAF Nigeria and Ghana. On 28th July at UEFA HQ they will hold a random draw as to who takes up which spot in the groups, the only one guarunteed is CONCACAF 1 (most porb USA) which will be in Group B in Hamilton with our friends Paraguay. CONCACAF A & B will be drawn out of a hat between the 2nd/3rd placed teams in that region and the same applies for CAF. So despite CONCACAF A being in NZs group it could be either Canada, Mexico or Costa Rica at this stage.

Hope this clears things up.
