NWSL announces 2022 framework. Good news for Erceg and Riley and Football Ferns.

Critically, the league has been able to build a schedule framework for 2022 that will significantly limit the number of games that occur during FIFA windows, ensuring the league’s most accomplished players are able to compete for club and country with relatively few conflicts compared to recent years.

Pretty much everyone available for selection now. Except for anyone still in NZ I guess. But if they are in NZ they are not playing currently.
Out of interest, a comparison to the squad that was named for the Olympics last year.

Warm congrats Rebekah Stott. Indeed a beyond football story.

Ford Football Ferns head coach Jitka Klimková has named a strong 23-player squad for the SheBelieves Cup (18-24 February NZT), headlined by the return of senior defender Rebekah Stott.

Stott returns to the squad following successful treatment after being diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma a year ago.

After being told on the day of the Ferns’ opening fixture at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games against Australia that she was in remission, Stott has impressed with her performances for Melbourne City in the A-League Women, and Ford Football Ferns head coach Jitka Klimková is thrilled to be able to call her up.

“This goes beyond football,” she says.

“Stotty’s situation is very unique – very few players have gone through what she has and returned to international football.

“She is a fighter. We all hoped and believed that she would come back, and watching her performances each week for Melbourne City has shown what a role model she is.

“She means so much to this team and we’re honoured to have her back,” says Klimková.

Who'd be our best keeper right now?  I'm of the feeling that while the men have some relative riches in this department, our ladies do not and it is a bit of a weak link (much like our striker problems away from Wood in both sexes).

Esson had a very good game last time out against Sth Korea.  And she has now signed for SC Hand in the Frau Bundesliga, I think she is no 1. But Leat has had a good number of games with West Ham recently (with their no 1 Aussie keeper away with the Matildas).

I'd say Nayler has slipped down the list. Just seems to have a flapping howler in her (bit Woud like) nearly every game now for the Ferns.

Lily Alfeld - Wellington Phoenix, Aotearoa (0 caps/0 goals)
Victoria Esson - SC Sand, Germany (4/0)
Erin Nayler - Umeå IK, Sweden (74/0)

Gonna come out and say this from the start... if Anna Leat isn’t already considered the Ferns’ number one then she should be. The way she performed in her window as a starter for West Ham United (while Aussie Mackenzie Arnold was away at the Asian Cup) was so impressive, not just the shots that she saved but especially her distribution. So calm with the ball at her feet and accurate with her passing. With Klimková trying to bring more of a belief in possession for this team having a ball-friendly keeper is massive and, of the keepers that we have, Leat is easily the best in that regard.

But Anna Leat is missing her for personal reasons, so it goes. Thus Lily Alfeld gets her first international call-up since November 2019 (her only previous call-up). A fine reward for the A-League’s leading save-maker even if it does leave the Welly Nix in a bit of a pickle. Brianna Edwards (a dual Aussie/NZ national) debuted off the bench for a ten minute cameo last game which had the ultimate hype-woman Alfeld celebrating on the sideline after literally just being subbed off... though they’re required by regulations to name a backup yet don’t really have the flexibility to sign one given their squad restrictions. Might have to chuck the gloves on an outfielder or something.

Back to Lily Alfeld though, I reckon she’s a good chance of that first cap on this tour (she’s the only uncapped player in the squad). Would not be surprised whatsoever if the three goalies play one game each at the SB Cup. Also, Alfeld’s the only one playing regularly at the moment. Erin Nayler’s been out of footy for a long time but her new gig with Umeå in Sweden is close to getting underway. She’s got a point to prove having been the no-doubt starter for several years... but she may also be rusty.

As for Vic Esson, she’s just signed with SC Sand in Germany for the second half of their season, a step up from her time with Avaldsnes in Germany however it may not come with automatic starts and will probably only last a few months as SC Sand are looking dead-set for relegation. More on that in this week’s Flying Kiwis column. Esson has been third choice for a wee while, part of 13 of the last 14 Ferns squads yet with only four total caps. But the fourth of those was in the 2-0 win over South Korea last time out when she was excellent.

This’ll be a funky trilogy of games for the goalkeeping position but yeah keep in mind that Anna Leat isn’t there and she’s the leader of the pack at the mo’.

So with the Nix A-League Women campaign done and dusted... what do you make of the Kiwis contention for making the Ferns team this year and in 2023.
For me:
Alfeld, Jale and Whinham should make the squad in the present, and especially for Whinham surely for 2023.
Kate Taylor and Grace Wisnewski have made great strides this season, but competition probably a bit tight right now. On their current trajectories 2023 is very possible.
Te Reremoana Walker and Mackenzie Barry also promising but a wee way off the top side especially with NZs depth at CB.
Ava Pritchard I haven't been super impressed by but maybe others disagree. Kelli Brown been affected by injuries. Zoe McMeekan started the season well but still has areas to improve on... I wouldn't want her on the pitch against the worlds best just yet.
Saskia Vosper I think is some way off and I don't think found her feet super well this season. Lancaster barely got a run so not really in consideration.

Don't think I've missed anyone, what do y'all think?

Assuming Alfeld makes the squad, what would your three-woman rotation look like for GK? Leat, Esson and Alfeld?

I think Jale is the strongest contender from the Nix. While Whinham has the talent and potential, I don't know if she is ready yet from the experience and physicality angles.

Still good to get her in and around the environment. She brings a point of difference that could well serve the team for years to come, the sooner she's in that environment the better.

If you're good enough, you're old enough.

I think if you're calling up Ava Collins, Jacqui Hand, Gabi Rennie, you can definitely call up Whinham. Maybe only worth some minutes off the bench but certainly a good idea to get her in there.

She's really grown in to a goalscorer role as the seasom progressed. Given our struggles up front it's logical to include her as a squad member.

Since they're hosting the World Cup and don't need to bother with this gigantic waste of time for this cycle (which would be just as a big a waste of time for an age-group or B team)

Think it'd be a shame not to send a team at all. It's silverware to be picked up and shows respect to our Pacific opponents.

I had sworn it had been said that New Zealand just simply wouldn't be invited/take part this cycle, but I now can't find that anywhere. Have made inquiries.

I only watched the Nix games of the A-League women's so not sure I've seen Green play before but the reaction seems to be pretty positive. Somebody who is more in the know would this be considered quite a coup for the Ferns?
