My one observation of the game would be that when Aussie had the ball the ball carrier had a decision to make on the pass they should make because the off ball players were providing options, when we had the ball the off the ball players were all waiting for the ball player to make a decision on her next pass but failed to give her options so she had a decision to make. The up side is it wasnt a technical deficiency that held us back but more a proactive thinking at individual level. Early days relative to the WC and I have some real hope we can be competitive at the WC
Ferns will likely get out of their WWC pool, as from memory they are a seeded team. So will get some weaker teams in their pool
But the best technical players in the AWs have nearly all come through the Nix and Olé Académies. I’m including Bell (Weenix) and Thomas (Edge pre Ole) in that
How many of the Ferns have gone through either of those systems? I’m talking about going in as a 13 yr old kid, not as an adult like I think Green has with the Nix. It’s too late by then
But until those 2 high quality academies are churning girls out, really good technically on the ball like Thomas, McCowatt, Just, Stamenic, Pijnaker, Garbett, Cacace, Singh, Bell, even Ben Old - Ferns won’t show much progress against the higher ranked bigger nations
I guess Women’s Nix team now offers a pathway to improve. Alyssa Whinham for example offers a hopeful glimpse to the future. Though likely too early to shine at next year’s WWC. Patience
Oh and weren’t Iceland and the Czech Republic both pretty similarly ranked to the Ferns at the She Believes Cup?
This constant trumpeting of the Nix and Ole academies is a bit insulting to the countless really good coaches around the country doing really good work with girls in the younger age groups. Its getting pretty nauseating. The way some of you speak it would seem the only coaches capable of producing good players are Nix or Ole coaches. Wind your heads in a bit.
That list of above male players (most of whom when into those 2 academies in their early teens) does firmly show that they are producing results. Sure the coaches who had them at earlier ages should also be recognised, and obviously most of the kids going to Porrirua and Newton Park are pretty talented before they even get there. Singh stood out at Onehunga Sports well before he moved to Welly.
But if you simply crudely compare the boys programme to girls programme in NZ, what's one big smack you in the face difference. That boys have been going through those 2 academies (intense finishing schools) in largish numbers for quite sometime now, compared to girls.
Why hasn't the FDDP programme in Auckland produced the same conveyor belt of talent in the girls/women's game? Ain't they getting the best young female talent in the country?
Would Paige Satchell have been a better player at a younger age with a better touch/football brain, if she had been through Weenix or Ole? I'm say yes 100%.
And yes this is to acknowledge that the Matildas are 12th on womens rankings. 12th in the mens game is Germany - though of course the international women's game is much shallower. But when Ferns play a top 15 type side it's invariably a dire watch. Heraf, Sermanni, Klimková - all struggled/struggling to solve an issue that starts way before the players get to international football.
So what's the answer(s) to having young female players in NZ, coming through with greater technical ability, and confidence to not just hoof the ball forwards as soon as they are put under pressure.
2 goals in the last 30 seconds (or thereabouts) of injury time to go from winning to losing... I don't think I've ever seen such a thing in any format of football.
Worst part is I don't know where 5 mins of injury came from to start with and the winner was at about 96 mins.
What was most dissapointing about the last 10 minutes of normal play plus injury time was our inability to retain possession of the ball and thus time waste. We kept lumping it up field allowing the Aussies to keep coming at us instead of trying to retain possession and run at the corner flags. We should have won this. The Ferns and/or coach are solely responsible for losing it in injury time. It really seemed as if they had no idea what time wasting is or how to go about doing it.

I think the criticism that Heraf aimed at the Ferns was pretty close to being correct. I think the older players in the squad were not keen on hearing a few truths being spoken (ie excess player power).
Sadly the Ferns are still carrying dead wood from then (Naylor, Wilkinson etc) but I do think some of the younger players coming through have far greater potentential then the players available when Heraf shot his mouth off.

that was the whole game not just the last 10 minuets. How the coach can be happy with that is mind blowing.

There may be some truth in there about some player power issues. That's from some gossip re a mate who was working at Olympics NZ.
But Wilkinson is clearly still the best striker the Ferns have. She's just not in the same class as Sam Kerr & co. Matildas actually have 4 attackers playing in the English Super League. Fact is they have far better skilled, more technical players.
But yeah no use dumping Wilkinson if there is no one better. Though yes Nayler is at best 3rd choice now behind Keat & Esson.
When the All Whites played this style of football under Hudson add said we were unbelievable the average punter ripped into him (rightly so). That’s because we knew that the new age kiwi player can actually play.
So by accepting the really poor standards of the Ferns recently we are either putting up with some average coaching or admitting that the ladies aren’t able to play the same style as their opposition or even their male counterparts.
To be fair though the Ferns have been playing the best of the best recently whilst the All Whites haven’t been played top 20 sides. Perhaps then we have to wait and see until we play Costa Rica to see if it translates to a game with something on it against a quality side..
The boys that are at the Weenix academy and with Ole- how many hours per week were they training? Has that opportunity been available for females? If it has I assume it’s a recent development and the fruits of that effort won’t be in the Ferns team for another few years. I do feel with licences coaches and a curriculum/ playing style to follow all players will improve significantly if they are in a full time environment- witness the improvement of the majority of the Phoenix womens team.
I think the big thing that Esson brings to the Ferns defence is clarity from her calling- Naylor is very quiet by comparison. I don’t think she needs to come off her line so often - maybe hardly ever if Erceg is playing. It was noticeable that when Vine came on she stood in front of Esson and impeded her getting close to the ball, when before that she was able to get a hand to the ball.
I think we haven’t had the right players in midfield to get the results we are capable of. And I think we try and play 15-30m passes when we need to be closer to each other and play 8-12m passes to side ball possession. They can’t connect and link up play as they are too far apart often. I would like to see the mids and forwards look to beat players with combination play rather than through 1-1 play or speed because asides from Satchell none of our players cause other teams an issue with our lack of pace - maybe Jale could be an option- couldn’t understand why she was asked to play central midfield on Friday night???
If all players are recovered/available I would like to see in a 1-4-2-3-1 formation prior to the WC Esson/Leat Riley Bunge Erceg Ally Green Bowen and CJ Bott Satchell Ria/White Chance Jale/Wilkinson
Looking forward to seeing an improvement in possession and attacking intent in Tuesday’s game
4 evening trainings a week plus weekend game for older kids. Surprised is only that, as I thought they also did early morning (before school) trainings as well. Maybe morning trainings are just for the kids in the Senior Academy Group - ie First & Reserve teams at Wests?
Certainly Mad Hatter Declan is a strong proponent of the '10,000 hours concept' (as in Malcolm Gladwell's popular book “Outliers.”). Think Ben Sipola's also a fan of it. In many ways Ole's training philosophy seems built off it.
Be interesting to know what hours they do at the Future Ferns Domestic Programme (FFDP), as I'd agrue that compared to the Nix & Ole Academies they haven't had the same alumni success. But yeah good numbers of young girls coming into Weenix, and the better players from that progressing to Nix Women's team will hopefully improve things alot for the Women's game.
Interesting to read that Paige Satchell at high school was a competitive runner, winning a national age group cross country title at age 13. I wonder if she had gone to either Weenix or Ole would they have let her continue to be a runner. Certainly in her early Ferns games, running to the corner flag was her go to!
Not the best comparison, but Ben Old was a top youth golfer. Invited to play in some US tournaments as a 7 year old. But I imagine once moving from Auckland to Weenix into a full time academy environment, (well before breaking into the first team), he's played a lot less rounds of golf.

NZF throws a load of resources at young female footballers. FFDP has developed more players paying in the top leagues internationally than males. Anyway, there is a World Cup next year so focus on that.
Geez their women are leaving us in the dust a bit. Their defenders are faster than out attackers and their attackers are faster than our defenders.
Yep. And we're rushing everything and missing the simple ball. But steadying a bit. Taking a bit more time on the ball and converting that with a nice goal end to end. Aussie maybe stood off a bit, but nicely played out out from the back, into space in midfield and then a great through ball finding Wilkinson. They're outpaced and outsized but half the problem is they've also rushed themselves and been overawed. Clearly the second best team, but they've also been making it hard on themselves.
Honestly it feels like scheduling this series was a bit of a waste of time for us. Against an opponent many leaps above us that beats us on a consistent basis, looking back on the She Believes Cup we needed to schedule in more friendlies against teams around us on the rankings (like Iceland and Czech Republic), not teams that will kick our arses and we have little realistic chance of beating.
And I know it's not easy or cheap to organise friendlies, but it's really an issue for us. Playing Canada, USA, Australia is not accomplishing much for this side.
Completely underwhelming. No clues, no plan B and the amount of giving the ball away is disgusting. Almost every 2nd pass was given to an Australian. This is exactly the same mistakes as in the first game. Did the coach not take any notice of the amount of losing possession then?
Watch the replay of the first Kerr goal, their other player blocks the run of Chance a bit like a move in Basketball and she gets a free run at the ball. Quality delivery though. Our successful passing percentage was only just over 50% wasn’t it? What was our possession stat? I think we need new blood in midfield, the Aussie athletic ability is streaks ahead of us, they have about 6-7 explosive athletes with similar pace to Satchell and Rennie, but the same build/height as Bowen so we get bumped off the ball easily. Would any of our players make the Aussie squad? Erceg would… anyone else?
not saying that the 3 goals were all the keeper's fault, it never really is but Nayler really should have done better on all of those shots, none of them were that difficult if she'd been stronger in the air and just better. IMO when she starts we concede more goals than we should and for whatever reason the defense's confidence looks decidedly low when they are in front of her.

Kinda. But these are the teams we will hit in the World Cup.
Better we get a reality check now so we have time to hopefully correct.
yeah i think the ol' adage applies, give the aussies a rule book and in 10 years they'll be world beaters. The money they invest in sport compared to us is insane. The fitness aspect if any sport is massive!

I don't understand how Cleverley and Hassett keep starting for us in midfield. They offer next to nothing and we get run over in the middle, and that doesn't just apply to versus Aus. Steinmetz and Stotty need to be starting every game they can there.

I don't know why she keeps on being given caps.
Serious questions need to be asked about the coaching staff's competence to coach and manage the national team.

I don't watch much womens football but I thought the keeper in the first match of the series looked pretty good relative to other womens matches I've watched.
