Excited to see this Philippines game on Wednesday. Sounds like we played decently and deserved to win against Mexico. Now hoping we can up our chance creation and score a few goals against a team we should be beating.
If you run the media at football organisation wouldn't shouldn't you be expected to work some weekends...? Bloody poor form from that there is nothing from national organisation about games.
Steinmetz now out with covid. Wouldn't surprise if there are more in the next 24 hrs. But current Ferns unavailable due to injury, covid or other is a whole team now. A competitive team of pro footballers at that. Wilkinson Rolston Jale Longo Steinmetz Cleverley Percival Ward Erceg Stott Bowen Just need a goal keeper so will throw in Alfeld. Plus Rosie White who hasn't announced retirement but is not playing currently. Also throw in Green & Collins who have played for the ferns recently but not selected for this tour.
I've found an update on that player and the situation with women's football in Peru and Latin America - and thankfully, things seem to be improving. Article here (by a former Peruvian female player who became a journalist, so she knows what she's talking about): https://theathletic.com/1714261/2020/04/01/in-peru-womens-soccer-is-blossoming-from-the-bottom-up/ That Peruvian player, Cindy Novoa, used to have to do ball tricks at intersections to get the bus fare to training. Apparently she doesn't have to now because players are paid a small wage (as captain of the national champions and a national team player, Novoa earns only $US 175 per month for playing). There's some interesting material on how things have been improving recently. Though this article also highlights some of the problems still faced e.g. male officials in the Colombian federation demanding bribes to even recognize the national women's team; Argentina's best national players being suspended for demanding better coaching; Peruvian national team players not even receiving expenses and paying for their own transport and food.
morgenstern12 wrote: Mexico has a pretty good women's league which is broadcast on TV and played in the stadiums and is attracting some big names from abroad, unlike anything here in New Zealand, it's just their senior national team that needs fixing. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Good to know. I know a Mexican here in Christchurch from Guadalajara who is a Chivas supporter and he's pretty dismissive of women's football in Mexico. But I guess that's just him. I looked up the very informative Wikipedia page on the Mexican women's league and there is much that is surprising (in a positive way): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liga_MX_Femenil Only started in 2017 and seems to have made huge progress. "The league set history as the final between Monterrey and Tigres was the highest attended club match in women's soccer history, with a total of 51,211 fans attending the match played at the Estadio BBVA. After the Spanish final of 2019, that record was broken, but Mexico still holds 7 out of the 10 highest attendance records for club games."
Yes but contrast the ground facility and crowd for that Mexico verus Ferns friendly in California, with the big expat crowds Mexico draw whenever their mens team play Stateside.
Obviously a long long way to go for the women's game still, in many traditional football powerhouses.
1-0 Phillipines at HT. Not a great first half by the ferns. All a bit pedestrian. Not looking like they have 2 goals in them. Will need more accuracy and intensity if they want something out of this game. Can they come from behind.
Absolute sharke. Will be embarrassing if we lose or fail to win.
Saw the other day that the only reason they knew about Paige-Riley was because of Stuff. And then on the broadcast that she said she didn't even know much about the Philippines play style... embarrassing when they have played heaps of televised games in the last twelve months.
Our play style is crap and honestly we don't look any better than a team ranked some 30 places below us on the world rankings. It's a shambles.
2-1, we were lucky to get away with it though, couple of chances from the Philippines that just missed. a wins a win, hopefully we look to improve on that second 45.
Glad the Ferns won but yeah disappointed at the fact we conceded first and then had to wait for a 2nd half penalty to equalise. Would just really like to see these girls beating teams like the Philippines by 3 or 4 goals, something that they haven't done in a while.
We definitely laboured, a disappointing performance against a poor opponent.
We should definitely avoid friendlies with top 10 teams, because we won't meet them in the group stage.
Not true - only guaranteed to miss the top 6 and Australia.
It's fairly pointless playing against those teams anyway - only gonna be one result. We need games like Mexico and Philippines more often - so we can improve and get better at playing poor opposition that will likely fill Pot C and Pot D in our group.

Gonna be a tough game against Japan next month with this same group. Hopefully more players are available for that one. Bowen, Stott etc.
Yeah that was a tough watch :/ was very very reactive football and lacking intensity esp the first half ... and some of our touches... Thought gabbie did well when she came on intensity wise and positional and at least riley (c) backed herself when she pushed up on the wing and showed a better close control. Also always like Chance but felt she had too much to do - seemed fairly isolated like our mids have too much space between them so they can't often combine and bounce off each other very well. Also Satchell didn't look herself today; and for a player with pace she really needs to work on her footwork to match it or chances are often wasted or the 'moments' that she creates then disappear with a slow turn or a large movement. I would still have her in the squad but bring her on as an impact player deep in the game. Shame not to see Maggie or Aniela get an opportunity to show/prove their game sense at this level.
that's pretty poor from the keeper and the player in midfield who lost it - got to do a lot better.
actually not surprised given its Naylor in goal..... how is she still getting selected?
The very fact that everyone watching the Ferns can see that Naylor is out of her depth apart from the coaches and NZF is all we need to know about how much player power is clearly in this group.
