The Football Ferns will head into the home Women’s World Cup having played a team from every confederation outside of Oceania, after locking in games against Iceland and Nigeria in Turkey.

New Zealand will continue their World Cup preparations with fixtures against the world No. 16 Iceland and world No. 45 Nigeria at the Mardan Sports Complex in Antalya on April 8 and 12 (NZT).

Looks like even the Nigerians will be tough, showing FIFA rankings don't mean much?? Ferns haven't got a striker anywhere in the world close to this Nigerian one.

Nigeria, meanwhile, qualified for this year’s World Cup after reaching the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

They will be the first African nation the Football Ferns have played since losing to Cameroon at the last World Cup, in 2019.

Despite their lowly ranking, they boast a squad full of European and North American-based professionals, including star striker Asisat Oshoala has scored 19 goals for Spanish giants Barcelona this season.

Wonder what difference that extra month waiting has made... surely playing against US??? Would have been more beneficial then not.

Yes why not bring Clegg into camp earlier. Either that weakened squad against USA, or even in for Portugal/Argentina wider squad. Both basically 10 day camps where Clegg would have got a valuable look at senior women's international football.

Why bring in likes of Tayla O'Brien or Jana Radosavljević against the US, if they were realistically very long shots for the WWC. Klimkova makes some strange calls

Why are NZF talking about blue shorts for the ladies sides?  When the men wore blue they did not look like a kiwi sports team at all.

Surely it's black all the way.

It's not as if we have not played in white shirts and black shorts before.

Yeah ditching the white shorts is 100% the right call, but blue? That’s just an England kit.

“It is not our biggest strength, being the most creative team in the world, but what we are is we are the ones who will be fighting and that's what we need to see again. If we don't see those values or if we don't see those beliefs on the field, that this is who we are, then we will have results like we had in February."-Klimkova

So team, if I don't see these values and beliefs and have results like in February, well, I will just pick the same players again...and if I don't see these values and beliefs next time, well then, I will pick you again...then after 6 years of this, well I have to leave, until you hire me again...

Congrats to Clegg at least, hopefully she destroys.

Scoring goals for the Nix, huge potential if she is allowed to develop. I think playing for the Nix for a couple of more seasons would be good for her - no pressure to perform, just allowed to get on with developing.

Clegg knocking in the occasional goal v defence/keepers well below international level doesn't necessarily equate to her being the salvation of the Ferns. From Jitka's POV she can bring her in saying she is doing what (some of ) the public asked for and then point the finger elsewhere if the Ferns don't bag goals.

Let's be totally honest here - NZF should have had the guts to fire her after the Portugal/Argentina series. That more than anything showed we are miles behind where we should be.

Reading the Niche round up of recent club games from overseas and having players playing in their club positions how would this 11 go? Right footed Riley playing right mid. Hand scoring goals, Foster and Chance playing key roles for their teams

See https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-cup/300834898/decision-to-ditch-football-ferns-white-shorts-relieves-period-anxiety

Really the problem is FIFA insisting that undergarments must match the outer uniform.  If they allowed dark undergarments under white shorts, I don't think this would be a topic of discussion.  We'd have a black (dark) kit and a white (light) kit, and digging out the 2004 era blue shirts with red shorts if we are ever away to a team with white and black stripes!.

Vietnam are possibly a close substitute for the Philippines (at least geographically - possibly stylistically) and it's very typical for teams to play geographical (near) neighbours to group opposition in friendlies. All Whites played Slovakia (Slovenia) and Chile (Paraguay) ahead of 2010 for example.

The Portugal result could have also humbled the team/management, and so whereas they might have possibly looked at Sweden to 'fill in' for Norway prior to that result, they now might be thinking another 0-5 loss would be the worst possible preparation. Better to go in riding the high of a win than a demoralising defeat.

Agruably the Ferns best player at the moment. Playing regularly in the English WSL. Hopefully Bott recovers quickly.

A win over Philillpines is also vital and realistic. So important to play hopefully similar Asian opposition beforehand. A win over Norway is less likely, perhaps not so important, and we have played plenty of strong Euro teams lately - including Norway themselves last year. Play Iceland tomorrow night.

Oh and AWs played Mexico , Australia, Serbia & Slovenia in the leadup to South Africa 2010.

Wonder if any of the other ALW Ferns like Hassett, plan to head north for playing time to keep fit. Sounds promising Chance's knee injury not too bad.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-cup/131745353/betsy-hassett-latest-football-fern-facing-injury-recovery-ahead-of-world-cup

Hassett was holding the side of her chest as she was helped from the field and Klimková said the Ferns would “do the maximum to take care of her”. It takes around a month to six weeks to heal a broken rib.

While Hassett had just finished an A-League Women campaign with the Wellington Phoenix, she was due to return to Iceland to continue playing ahead of the World Cup.

Chance was replaced at halftime of the 1-1 draw with Iceland last Friday after going to ground clutching her left knee after she made a tackle.

She went for scans the day after that match, but the last time Klimková spoke to media, the morning before the Nigeria match, there was no update available, though she said the left-footed midfielder was walking freely and not in any pain.

who is the world, apart from alan pardew (who got 7 at newcastle) gets a 6 year contract?

combine this with head office apathy, player apathy, etc, when hosting the world cup and the whole vibe is plain weird

Winston.
Aside from her perceived deficiencies, I don't think she is a particularly inspiring character for the general public to get excited for in this WC.

I completely agree.

Was super pumped to come home and watch the Ferns play positively but from what I've seen, we will be an embarrassment.

Staying in Europe for the summer looks like a better idea at this point in time.
