I am.  Started well.  Now struggling.  Think GB will win, and at least one goal from a header.

Bit nerve-wracking near the end of the half but not looking too bad imo

all we need is to come out like the start of the first half, nick a goal and then bring back the double decker

Finished 1-0. Disapointing goal to concede. Unnecessary foul given away in a dangerous position by Hearn, then some suspect positioning from Bindon.

Didn't really create anything.  Our one chance came from their defensive mistake.  Should have scored.

I got up for it. Would have been a good scalp that one but I was a bit worried our girls started with too much of a fluster and paid for it later on. I would have put my house on Gregorius to put that one away.

Was quite impressed with Ali Riley this morning, hopefully we can go on to get a result against Cameroon and do ok against Brazil.

Readings is giving it the " accentuate the positives " that we all know and love...Truth is NZ were well beaten in everything but the scoreline, and to be honest I expected a bit more. We constantly hear about these players being " technically and Tactically aware " and " comfortable on the ball ", and yet from my viewpoint they cough up possession far too easily and then resort to aimless balls forward, usually of the long variety. Still quite a way to go development wise methinks, and as for the coaches, well they certainly talk a good game, use the right buzz words, and have the uncanny knack of seeing things in performances nobody else can...amazing...

I actually thought they played really well, in patches. The potential is certainly there. The next olympics will be our time. Hopefully we can manage to get through to the next round this time.

Didn't play well, but could easily have taken something from game. Shame it was some awful goalkeeping (bindon looked suspect throughout) amd a woeful miss by gregorious that ultimately cost us. Overall, I felt let down by the quality of the match in general.

26 Jul 07:54 · edited 09 Sep 06:10

First 10 minutes was great. I think we put in 3 crosses the box to our strikers. We built up well from defense to wide midefield and got the ball for half chances to our strikers. We made England(plus 2 Scottish in the squad) look very average. Unfortunately, once England got hold of the ball and pushed up a couple of times, everything seemed to break down for us the rest of the game, except for some patches.

GG should have put the goal away, but I feared she would fluff it. She ran on to the ball in the perfect position, but turning her hips and then passing the ball to the right side with her right foot. was going to be predictable for most goal keepers. This is basically a mini world cup, u got to do something special to score. her options should have been.

1. Whack the crap out of the ball and score a screamer.

or

2. fake the pass shot and go around the keeper to the left.

anyway hopefully she will come back from this.

The football ferns and nz womans football has come along way in the last 5 years. here is looking forward to the next 5 years. Not sure we will beat brazil. hope we beat cameroon though. but assume that means we are out. unless there is one of these best 3rd place things.

disclaimer: I also would have fluffed that shot. but i am fat, old and always played in defense. so i have an excuse ;)

If we build it, they will come...

Not a great fan of womens football so I did not get up to watch the game but saw the replay this afternoon.

I was surprised that we played some good football. Sure, GB were the better side but I reckon we have something to work with. Good on them.

There is one of those best 3rd place things, so three points will likely see us through.

I've just found out that Sky wont be showing this on one of their non MySky olympic channels. Poor form really considering they're showing two other wimmins games at the same time on 4 and 5. Lucky for Prime really.

The Brazil game that is.

And now I've just found out it's delayed on Prime! FARK

Gutted for the girl's. Hope they can pick themselves up for the final game, still loads to play for.

Sooooo tough for the Ferns to lose like that. They were right on track to get a point at least....0-0 after 86 minutes. They really played a brilliant tactical game....worked their arses off and closed down the Brazilians. They just need to be a bit more composed in the final third to be dangerous.

Some people were questioning why the Ferns got a bigger grant for funding than the men. I think there is your answer.

Bindon to blame again.

Sadly this.  I really think she is a liability, and has been in the last couple of years.  I really struggle to see how she has remained our number one keeper.

Because it is women's football and there is no depth.

29 Jul 00:43 · edited 09 Sep 06:10

i think the ferns deserved a point here, coulda been on two points from 2 games if wed had a little luck

but i guess that football, we really are looking good though

after lookin at the other games, a win should get us through to the next round and i think we will cause problems

She's 39. Is our goalkeeping depth really that bad?? It would be great to have a 6ft+ goalkeeper. Nab a netballer at school level and convert them to football.

29 Jul 02:31 · edited 09 Sep 06:10

The back up is 35 I think.  They the third choice is Aroon Clansey who is 25.

There is a former central pulse player, (I think is early 30s) who is playing for Brookyln here and trying to become the next number 1.  But the skills aren't very compatiable.

We have no depth in men's football either though - sad that the Oly Whites turned a draw  against Belarus into a loss due to poor goalkeeping too.

O'Keefe shows promise - he made some good saves - but has never played at any decent level before. The boy plays for Fairfield University, not a strong US football college, in one of the weaker of the 30 odd US college leagues. Google "MAAC men's football" and you'll see it's a poor league (would be worse than ASB Premiership). Fairfield have only made the national college (NCAA) finals four times in their history and were knocked out after one game last year...

Bindon plays for Hibiscus Coast men's team since there's no decent women's team in her area. Our NZ women's domestic competitions are pretty mediocre compared to most countries competing in the Olympics, some of whom like Germany and Sweden have good national professional leagues or decent semi-pro leagues like England.

We have a really good younger keeper in Aroon Clansey who plays for Liverpool Ladies in the semi-pro English Women's Super League. She's made some starts in recent months in her first season in England (the league runs till November). Readings tends to prefer experienced players more than giving youngsters a chance (fair enough call in many ways) as Herdman did. Hence he's stuck with Bindon and recalled Rebecca Rolls (aged 37 next month) the NZ Women's cricket wicketkeeper who last played for the Football Ferns in 1996 until recalled in February. Another youngster, Erin Nayler, aged 20, is the stand-by keeper and was first-choice at  the 2010 u-20 World Cup and was in the squad with Cllansey at the senior World Cup last year. Older keepers are generally more reliable, as we've experienced with the men's sides when comparing Paston and Moss with Gleeson and O'Keefe.

They should be putting money into developing the domestic women's game to produce a better national team, although to be fair, our best players are always going to be better off playing overseas anyway. Players playing domestically like Hannah Wilkinson show a lot of promise but need to get into good overseas leagues to improve further..

That was still a really encouraging team performance against Brazil this morning - most  AW's fans would be ecstatic if the AW's put up a fight like that against Brazil in the men's World Cup and lost at the end to an unlucky goal.

Cameroons are not very good - poorly organised and few individual threats apart from one pacy striker , so should score a few against them (hope it turns out like the buildup game against top Swiss women's club side Young Boys two weeks ago when the Ferns won 10-0 !!!)

One could also argue a lack of goals is also to blame.  ie 2 games = 0 goals. Too easy to blame the goal-keeper!!
