Ferns like their chances against Australia

Soccer: Ferns like their chances against Australia
By Terry Maddaford
4:00 AM Wednesday Feb 17, 2010

-A late news article but to his credit it was short and to the point without silly personal opinion probably hi best for a very long time

The odds are stacked against them, but in a rare outing on home soil, the New Zealand women's soccer team are determined to break an 18-match losing streak against Australia at North Harbour Stadium tonight.

While age group teams have flown the national flag recently, the Football Ferns will play at home for the first time in almost three years in two tests against Australia. The second test will be at Bill McKinlay Park on Saturday.

The matches will provide both teams with much-needed preparation for international assignments.

The Ferns leave after the second test for a return trip to the Cyprus Cup where they finished fourth a year ago while the Australians have Asian World Cup qualifying games in May.

The Australians have not been beaten by New Zealand since 1994.

The last time they played at home, the Ferns were beaten 3-0 and 5-0 by Canada in 2007.

"Those games didn't go too well but we are a different team now," said captain Hayley Moorwood. "We are quietly confident and out to get a win."

Since those losses to the Canadians, the Ferns have had 1-1 draws against Canada - in a pre-Olympic match in Singapore and at last year's Cyprus Cup.

They can also point to a 2-2 draw with Japan at the Olympics and wins over Argentina and the Netherlands as positive signs.

Moorwood, 26, a veteran of 46 internationals, said the team are keen to show their progress to a home crowd.

"I think it is about showing we are entertaining, we are not a kick-and-chase team," said Moorwood.

"We like to get the ball down and look to play. It is something we have worked on in the last few years."

Australia have included five players who play professionally in Sweden or the US with the rest drawn from the highly-competitive Australian W-League.

3-0 australia.

Bad performance, i cant remember the side having a shot.
I dont mind womens football and im not having a go at the players. The coach needs to pull his head in. From the kick off there was atleast 2 players out there limping around then bring on a striker who had a serious limp. What was the idea of playing injured players?!!

The worst performance of the night came from Mike Hester the referee, what an absolutely shocking performance, infact deadset disgraceful. How he sent of the nz captain for the 2 softess fouls ive ever witnessed i will never know! If hes our countries best referee im sorry to say we are in dire problems! What i witnessed tonight convinced me he is imcompetent. If someone disagrees with me that was at the game tonight please email me and share your views.

The young girl number 14 came on and did well along with the number 10. some good players but australia just had too many.

Soccer: Matildas waltz in

By Terry Maddaford

Australia 3
New Zealand 0

An embattled New Zealand women's soccer team were hammered last night as they sought to snap a losing run against Australia stretching back to 1994.

The Football Ferns came up well short at North Harbour Stadium on the back of what coach John Herdman later described as a "very, very disappointing effort" effort against the Melissa Barbieri-led Matildas.

"They are better than that," said Herdman. "I think there will be some very disappointed and upset players in the dressing room. The Aussies out-battled us all over the field. We need more from our senior players if we hope to match them."

The visitors quickly adjusted to the pace of the game and dictated, especially in midfield.

Always appearing half a pace quicker than the Football Ferns, the Australians were rarely under pressure, their cause helped by a lack of understanding between the New Zealand midfield and attack which too often led to a breakdown in play.

At times debutante Hannah Wilkinson threatened to stretch the Australians on the flank but her inexperience was exposed. She was not alone as opportunities went begging.

The Australians dominated in midfield with Heather Garriock their go-to player.

She got forward to set herself for the first shot of the match but fired straight into the hands of New Zealand goalkeeper Jenny Bindon.

From the counterattack Wilkinson charged deep into Australian territory but fired wide.

The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute. A weak Ria Percival free-kick fell to the Australians who quickly pushed forward, Garriock fed the ball into the penalty area from where world-class Sarah Walsh hit home, giving Bindon no time to react.

Bindon was by the far the busier of the goalkeepers but while her shot-stopping and positional play was on song, her failure to clear halfway with her goalkicks too often handed possession to the visitors.

That led to four unanswered first-half corners which Bindon comfortably covered as she did when, late in the spell, the Australians created two good half chances.

Determined to continue in the same emphatic fashion after the interval, they were soon rewarded when they broke on the left, played the ball into the near post from where Walsh cheekily provided the finish for 2-0 after 52 minutes. Lisa De Vanna got the final touch for 3-0 eight minutes from time.

In only her second outing at this level, Bridgette Armstrong got through a busy night well while Rosie White, on the bench until the 57th minute, provided some attacking spark.

Australian coach Tom Sermanni was happy. "I was not sure what to expect as we have not played since January last year but I was really pleased. We looked sharper and had genuine pace up front."

Matildas is a name for a "bag slung over one's back" and Joey is a "young marsupial" So really any lonely swagman in the outback have no women but only their bags on their back to dance with. If you follow that song.

Calling female footballers as "bags" is not really not what you normally like to reference to.

It's rediculous that it wasn't on the telly given the rise of he All Whites, Phoenix - the Girly World Cup being here and being a success. So TV1 wants to claim rights for big events for the public good, but can't pick up other things for the public good. Stuff them.

So how did the Ferns do at Panmure today? I was going to go but there was an awful car crash and traffic was impossible.

Yeah. Aussies were just so much stronger physically than us, and missed a few chances. We worked hard but didn't really create much. I didn't see the first game, but we did okay yesterday. Not great though. Pretty pathetic crowd too!

New Zealand Football: Football Ferns 1 Italy 0

February 25, 2010

AUCKLAND The Football Ferns have upset world number 11 Italy 1-0 in Nicosia on Thursday morning (NZT) to begin the 2010 Cyprus Cup with a bang.

An Amber Hearn goal on half hour mark proved to be the winner and ensured the Ferns added a new European scalp to that of world number 17 Netherlands at the same event last year.

Rosie White was the chief creator, beating two players and providing a pinpoint cross for Hearn to drift between two markers and meet with powerful header.

The girls really stepped up tonight, said New Zealand head coach John Herdman, we were strong all over the pitch. It was a throwback to the performance against the Dutch last year when we really hit our straps.

The players were really satisfied at the end of the game. They worked really hard against a very organised Italian outfit, but stuck to their task.

The win comes after back to back 3-0 home losses to Australia last week, and is a remarkable turnaround against an Italian side that dismantled the Matildas 5-1 in Sydney last year.

Those two games against Australia were great preparation but prompted a bit of soul searching. We were happy with the performance in the second game but we lacked quality in front of goal. We got that quality tonight as the combination of Hearn and White was outstanding

Herdman also paid tribute to the returning VfL Wolfsburg defender Rebecca Smith, who missed the Australian series.

When you get professional players Rebecca Smith and Ali Riley in the mix consistently it makes a huge difference.

Bex Smith really is our teams Ryan Nelsen. She came in and solidified the back four and added leadership as well.

Next up for the Ferns is a rematch against the Netherlands who head Group A thanks to a comfortable 4-1 win over Scotland.

A second straight win for either side would all but book a place in the final of the eight team tournament and Herdman expects the chance of revenge to provide the Dutch with extra incentive.

Theyre coming off the back of making the European Championship semi-finals and are now full time professionals.  They looked organised, sharp, and cohesive today.

Without a doubt they will be up for the match, but weve got the mental edge thanks to that win.

With just a day off between match day two, New Zealand would closely monitor the health of a group of four players, including captain Hayley Moorwood suffering from a suspected virus.

In Group B fixtures England defeated South Africa 1-0 and Canada edged Switzerland 2-1 .

Don't think so, Guy.

For starters, this is the NZF media release which he's copied - I do my own work, and would have had a story up on www.sportswebsoccer.com long before this came out (by 7.45am this morning, in fact) had a few mobiles not been understandably switched off while celebrations were taking place! :-))  Try as I might, I couldn't get through to anyone post the final whistle. :-((

I won't be able to get my story up till tomorrow morning now - a combo of work, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, and needing to complete a half-written story after I've had a natter with those who matter!

BTW, those anticipating TV coverage, don't! There's no coverage of the Algarve Cup (which is taking place at the same time in Portugal) in Europe, so you can guarantee there won't be any of the Cyprus Cup. The best you'll get is live score updates on the internet.

NZF could have release a small message to the TV networks and get someone to give them an interview on the telephone. I would go for that. Italy is like number 11 in the world, so it has to be newsworthy.

Certainly newsworthy, AWB, but it didn't happen for logistical reasons.

NZF's media man, Jamie Scott, is in South Africa at present as part of their World Cup training delegation - Ricki Herbert is attending the same event.

He didn't have access to a computer until well after the final whistle yesterday, and was relying on my texted score updates to keep him posted on events in Cyprus. You'll note that it wasn't until late morning that NZF's media release came out, some six hours after the final whistle had blown.

There will be further logistical issues tomorrow, as the NZF World Cup delegation will be in transit from South Africa to Los Angeles. Jamie tells me they'll be boarding a flight when the final whistle blows in Larnaca circa 3am, so he's going to have to get some quotes etc literally as he's crossing the tarmac, and write NZF's story in flight.

Cheers,
