That's what happens when you schedule a game on a weekday at a 530pm start time. Believe it was done so Killen would be able to make his connecting flight back to the UK that night.

...and believe that a few random posters around town constitutes advertising the game.

What will be the talking point in 20 years time- the crowd or the result?

NOV 14 will answer that question.
End of.

Whatever the result the crowd is a tribute to Wellington as a venue for football matches.

If Auckland ever gets a major football game again it will be a miracle.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

...or are we just letting them in on a weekend pass!!

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Oh please, I've been in a crowd of less than 1000 watching New Zealand play Oceania opposition at North Harbour.  2002 Oceania Nations Cup.  Tahiti, PNG and the Solomons.  In fact the Semi, also against Vanuatu but at Mt. Smart had less than 1000.  The other semi-final had about 150 at it - Australia vs Tahiti.

Even the final against Australia barely broke 4000.

Considering I bought his ticket and the ringleaders of Bloc 5's tickets he'll DEFINITELY be standing with visitors from Auckland.

Here or in Auckland ?  For the Australia vs Tahiti semi-final I can tell you it was god awful.

I don't remember it being too bad here.  It wasn't raining.

Oh nah i think it had been raining during the day but cleared up for the game. there were fireworks though...

It was the most poorly advertised game though,no one would have known it was on unless they visited this website. And the timing was awful, just as people were knocking off work in the middle of the week...

You're thinking of the U-17 girls game against Columbia (fireworks).

That was a bloody awful night.

I'm flying down from Auckland for it, as I am for every Phoenix game from now till the end of the year.

There's quite a large out of town contingent coming from all around for the All Whites game but I'm still not going to begrudge Wellingtonians celebrating the superb job they have done with getting in, supporting their teams and creating a fantastic community there.

Most of the time when I come down I'm sat with a group of which only one other is registered here. When I came down for the Nix vs Jets on Jan 4th my regular crew was still away for their new year holidays so I was attending by myself.
I found the other fever members I met to be most welcoming so I would encourage the rest of you to join in with that spirit and not let it get too 'us vs them'

Ah yeah, forgot there were those games, all I knew was it was an international of some sort. I remember better now,the Vanuatu crowd was small but it was fun and very vocal. Even managed a full switch to the other side of the stadium

Indeed.

White Noise zone was an elite fighting force.  Small enough to make chants fly and up the back so great acoustics.

...they wore suits but they weren't gentlemen.

Geez, you've just reminded me how aweful that was.  Even the seagulls were louder.
Then I missed the NZ Aus game because I was the designated translator and had to go back to the hotel with the Tahitians.  They were still buzzing about almost taking Aus to extra time, on the Friday afternoon 2 days earlier.

Frank Farina and the Aus bench giving us the fingers after they came back and won it following us giving them 83 minutes of abuse standing under the canvas covers on the corporate boxes.

Oddly enough I suffered no emotional remorse at him getting the sack last week.

400 at that semi ?  They're having a laugh.  I'd also say those 1000 crowds at NHS are delusional.

I do struggle to see how you come to this conclusion.  And yes, I will bring up the Vanuatu game.  It may well have been on a Wednesday, but so was the game against Malaysia (in Auckland) and they got over 8000.

Also, with the Bahrain game I suspect many thousands of the people attending will be out-of-towners so Wellingtonians should slow down with the back-slapping.

The only other place given a chance with football has been Auckland who, I agree, failed hard.  Christchurch, on the other hand, has had a few games (all of which they've done well with) and in a number of cases has surpassed Wellington.  The novelty factor has undoubtedly played a role in some of these games but still.

So basically what I'm getting at is more All Whites games in Christchurch and an A-League team further down the track once the Phoenix are truly able to win over the Aussie public.

P.S. The Vanuatu game

What point  ?  That Wellington got 2.5 times what Auckland did the last time the All Whites played Vanuatu there ?

I'd love to see AWs come back to CHCH again. I've said this several times already, Wellington is the best choice IMO because it's central to the whole country, many people wouldn't travel to Auckland because it's too expensive to get there.

The point that Auckland, a commonly agreed upon place of failure, still managed to show Wellington up considerably which makes me question the notion of Wellington being the football capital of NZ.

And all that stuff about Christchurch.

But they didn't.

As I said, last time I watched New Zealand vs Vanuatu in Auckland there were under 1000 people there.  How exactly did that show up Wellington's 2,500 ?

As I said, the Malaysia game showed up Wellington.

With the overall point challenging Wellington's capital of NZ football claim.

How ?

I don't remember there being a New Zealand vs Malaysia game in Wellington ?  How do we know how many might have turned up for that ?

All you can look up are comparable games and the last time New Zealand played Vanuatu in Wellington they got 2500 vs 1000 (estimated) in Auckland.  Likewise the last time New Zealand played Australia in Wellington it drew 19,500 vs 4,000 in Auckland.

Your stats aren't adding up.

Malaysia and Vanuatu are similarly skilled teams.  Both games are in recent history.  Both games in the middle of the week.  Auckland did well, Wellington failed (Sunderland equivalent fail it was).

Yes, Wellington has probably beaten Auckland numerous times.  All I'm saying is that it can hardly claim to be capital of football in NZ.

Not even close.

Asian opposition with large local population and following vs Island Nation most people couldn't find on a map let alone name a town in.

Your average kiwi probably couldn't find Malaysia on the map or name a town there either.

Overall point, Wellington has only proved that it's better than Auckland football-wise and as such can hardly claim to be football capital of NZ.

And yes, to the last guy, ofcourse I picked and chose.  I made that quite clear.  I gave an example from recent history.
