The question I would ask of this result is were the Junior Matildas at full strength because if the All Whites beat the Socceroos by the same margin, I would ask the same question.

I believe that they had  7 or more of their no1 team playing, NZ were missing a number key players so taking that into account a fantastic result.

They've done them 4-0 again...

Young Football Ferns repeat record trans-Tasman win

April 17, 2008

New Zealands U-17 women footballers broke new ground in Canberra on Thursday clinching a series win over Australia with a second 4-0 demolition in three days.

Backing up Tuesdays victory by the same scoreline the biggest win by New Zealand over Australia at any level the Young Football Ferns became the first kiwi women to win back-to-back trans-Tasman matches on Australian soil, with head coach Paul Temple delighted for his young side.

Its great to be the ones who set a bit of history, Temple said.

The girls take a lot of pride in these results and the fact that all the hard work put in over the last few months is paying off.

The team wanted to send a message out that they can really play that they can beat sides so they deserve everything theyve got.

All four goals came in a first half onslaught with striking pair Lauren Murray and Sarah McLaughlin each grabbing a double.

The game was a lot tougher today, admitted Temple, but the difference was our finishing was exceptionally clinical.

We didnt get as many chances as the first game, but still scored some great goals. Any side around the world would be happy with those.

Our team needs to be clinical because were not going to get many chances against the big teams in the World Cup so we need to take what we get like we did today.

Murray got New Zealand off to a flyer directing her eight yard header into the bottom corner in the third minute, and rounded off the scoring five minutes before half-time after latching on to a defence-splitting Nadia Pearl through ball.

In between, McLaughlin also netted twice, first with a powerful far post from Megan Sheas 23rd minute free kick, and then applying the finishing touch to a counter-attack started by player of the match Nadia Pearl.

Nadia was fantastic on Tuesday and outstanding today with the way she controlled the game from midfield, Temple said. Shes really embraced the vice-captaincy role on and off the field.

The three match Australian tour part of New Zealands preparations to host the October/November FIFA U-17 Womens World Cup concludes with a match against the Australian U-20s on Sunday.

It should be noted that Canberra is a happy hunting ground for us lately.

An understrength (depending on your selection views) boys U-20 side turned over Aus in a three game series there about 20 months ago as well.  Side was the U-20's from Canada with only Henderson as an import plus the likes of ickle Mikey Eager and the right Barbarouses (George )

The Phoenix should consider a youth team there... Ha !

Impressive. 4 goals shows real class at that level and to repeat that is simply breathtaking. What is even more impressive is that in both games there was a clean sheet.

A number of these girls were uprooted and had to live in Auckland so they could train together. It's amazing what a bit of FIFA money can do here.

Each of them have national squad training 3 times a week, one club training and a club match on the weekend to go along with the school workload. That great work. Although I have specific thoughts on improving that situation, it a great commitment by these girls and the supporting staff.

I also think that the AIS training centre where these girls have got some advice by a multisport trainers have allow them to focus on things that are not covered normally. This area is where I think our Government needs to contribute to our sport by taking a leaf out of the Australians.

Besides that, I think that next match is the real test of their fitness and skill. They are all reasonably quick and superfit, so they should almost match the OZ u20 side (3 years is a huge difference) physically. The question remains, are their skill factor up to it??

It's going to be a interesting game.

yeah great results.

Don't want to knock the results, but I did wonder about the strength of the aussie side and if they were fielding the strongest team.

Also,  I don't think Australia u17 girls qualified in the Asian Qualifiers. Which says two things. They were not good enough to qualify even with their strongest squad and two; because they didn't qulaify they have not been having the build up games and training that the nz team has had.

in saying that though, it is all good. I just dont want to get my hopes up for the WCu17. As i do that at all the previous age group world cups and always get slightly dissapointed.

If we build it, they will come...

Excellent result. But again, TV3 didn't even mention it on the news. It seems understanding why the AB's choked in France 6 months ago was more important.

Emailed TV3 to express my displeasure.

.....

we also had a few of our certainties out (e.g Longo), so fringe players could be assessed
