Sorry if this has already been discussed. But reading the Sunday Star Times this morning. Looks as if Ricky want them to play in the black strip more than the white. And Maybe be just called New Zealand rather than "All Whites"

Big Deal?

What do people think

I'm all for it. I think black just looks better on the sports field, and I'm not totally fussed if we had to lose the "All Whites" tag. I'm sure we can come up with something else...

Do not want. On the eve of our second World Cup appearance, we turn our back on the first?

I'm fine with a black change strip, but I see no reason good enough to justify ditching our history and identity.

They can re-imburse us for the White Noise investments we've made for starters.

Oh, and they can sod off.  I'm fine with them playing in Black, but it's our name, the name we've grown up with and supported for almost 30 years...

Please tell me you're joking, and actually do understand how democracy works?

Boycotting the poll is the LAST thing we should do if we want to keep our kit white. If you want to boycott something, refuse to buy the black kit, or merchandise that is in black. Then show up to the world cup qualifier head to toe in white.

You know my simple mind robb,i meant go all out saying no to the black kit and name change

At first I was all for it, now thinking about it I'm kind of neutral.  If it was anything on 'socceroos', though, well there'd be no question whatsoever.

I am for it, adopting the black strip and removing the All Whites tag.

Black is our national colour in major sporting events and should be worn. It used by all our major sports, Rugby, Cricket, Hockey etc etc and also at the Olympics. I think wearing black is more kiwi... (only because this is the colour I associate with our sports teams and nation). White is a point of difference we don't need for the sake of having it.

If we then do wear balck and persist to call our selves the All Whites we will be setting up ourselves for a piss take. Also why do we need this name, it was adopted, used and will be remembered. A New Zealand team been called New Zealand sounds better to me.

White Noise become the beige brigade of football and revel is the nostalgia of the name and the 82 World Cup. I'm looking forward to witnessing a new era of NZ Football.

Except the national colours of NZ are officially black, silver AND white. Black is the primary colour, true. But white is still a national sporting colour of NZ. The Kiwis use a fair bit of white on their jerseys, and white is the main lettering colour for every team that uses predominantly black. Last years Olympic uniforms? Black and white. The only point of difference is that we use one of our national colours more than other teams.

[quote]Also why do we need this name, it was adopted, used and will be remembered.

The same could be say of the name All Blacks. It evolved organically and caught on. Rugby was the result of the "all backs" slip of the tongue (allegedly). Football was contrast to the rugby team at the time (remember it was during the Springboks issue), the uniform (obviously), and the fact that this all happened during the greatest moment the sport has seen in this country. There's a hell of a lot behind the name "All Whites", it's not just some punny marketing ploy like Tall Blacks or Black Sox.

Robb....

The use of white lettering for an argument to keep the name all whites is very very weak. However, your arguements behind the meaning of the name has more weight to it.

But in resposonse to it, the name was adapted in response to events happening 20 + years ago and because we were trying to stand apart form rugby. Those events are no longer prevelant and I thought we wanted to distance ourselves from rugby so why hold on to a name which draws comparisons of the codes??

And the best way to do that is to adopt the colours of the NZ national rugby team. Whatever.

I'm not really fussed about the All Whites name (in general I'm meh about these kind of nicknames), but the white kit has to stay. It is the most symbolic thing NZ football has, and to abandon it would be both silly and even a bit of a betrayal.

this is like the whole idea that the all blacks lost the world cup cause they weren't in black.. its a load of rubbish. black or white it doesn't matter, we shouldn't not support a team because they changed their strip. and the people complaining about buying an all white top in the past what will they do now well how many times do club teams change their strips. if it still says NZ FOOTBALL on it then why does it matter what colour it is we know what team you're cheering for. the all blacks didn't get their name because of the colour of their tops anyway.

I suppose a name change has to follow a strip change but I think its more of strip change first and foremost..I hope we dont come up with any silly Black..??...names.  We had all that when the Tall Blacks were being named..and the Black Sticks.   I favour "New Zealand".

i dont think anyone has argued for any of those points you just brought up. Nobody here is saying we wouldnt support them!

This is typical, chuck years of history and tradition down the drain because some marketing genuis decided we should play in black. The strip colour shouldn't change - the all whites are the all whites, why would anyone want to change that. Ridiculous

The main reason is that the World Cup/ConFed Cup is in Africa and the title "All White/s" seems racist and would most prob be taken that way buy some/alot of press.
Maybe Hover-lips can shine some light on this.

I don't really have the problem with them playing in both the black and white strips. But the name the all whites should stay. So there the all whites playing n a black strip against england or Germany. Its like saying we should change the name of the All blacks because someone thinks that the Grey strip looks better. (obviously it doesn't.)

I'll be honest here.  Even if NZ Footy is selling itself out it isn't over anything that is big a deal and we do need the money.

In my opinion, the black strip the team wore when we played New Caledonia on the North Shore looked far better than either our blue or white strip.

I really don't see this as a big deal.

We all grew up with the All Whites and to change the name on the eve of a world cup is crazy. Of course I will still support the team, but it loses some of its charm if the name attached to so much NZ football history is changed.

As for the new name... any suggestions being bandied about? No doubt it will be something ridiculous related to the All Blacks brand.

I did mean the black strip. And the different white strip. I think the white strip should be the first choice. But at least we know we have a good back up strip if it is to clash. NO NAME CHANGE!

I bought a black shirt because of the two current kits I think it looks better, but to dump the symbol of NZ Football's proudest era because some bigwigs reckon that one particular shirt looks better than the same kit inverted? RETARDED!!! It's like Man United deciding to change their home kit colours to all blue because the Glazers prefer this year's third kit to the home one. And if I was going to play internatonal football in steaming Africa or Asia I'd rather not play in Black.

Remember that we spent most of the nineties and the earlier part of this decade with black as our change strip so to treat it like a 'revolution' is tired and smacks of new-dawnerism.

Do all international teams have nicknames?  If they did change it they could just have it as NZ instead of something woeful like the previously suggested footyblacks.
