That's part of the problem of the NZ game (and I'm not picking on these guys specifically it's at all levels) our distribution is poor and we are static, look at the Japanese they always offer themselves up for the return pass or move into a position to support the ball carrier where as we make a pass, admire how good it was and wonder why the player we gave it to gets disposed.
I'm not advocating that players run around like chickens with their head cut-off but we need to develop that support play if we are going to improve

They were awesome. Shows the gap that still exists for us, and to think we are getting better too.
 
Look forward to the eventual overall player ratings for the tournament.

yep, the Japanese played well and credit to them for continuing the entertaining passing football for the full 92 mins.
But I don't understand the NZ tactics - they seemed to play defensive knock-about from the first minute, almost a repeat of the game against the US - but today's game was winner takes all.

I guess it all comes back to how these guys are trained as youngsters. If they haven't been coached in this style of play then I suppose we can't rag on them when they don't play that way. It's a great advertisement for the up skilling of coaches that NZ Football is trying to undertake.

Always drag opposition down by saying their players are dirty, as Teza does. Then, we come from a small country with 4.2 million, the playing conditions are tough, eg high temp and high humidity, then ref is against us, crowd is not supporting and cheering us, but seldom that we are not good enough at that level. Then, oh well, they can play for Phoenix becasue they scored goals against Ubek. So we move on.

Very true. It will be interesting to see the progress of 10-15 year olds (at all levels) in Wellington over the next few years now that they get game & training time on artificials.

Angus you are an arse, why do you even bother coming on here. It was an observation nothing to do with dragging the other side down or making an excuse. Japan were by far the better side in skill, tactics and fitness which if you read the thread multiple people have commented on (including myself).

worse than the game against Nigeria, never thought I'd say that.  Pretty poor.  Hopefully they can learn something from this.  No one will be more disappointed than the players.

Teza is speaking about himself, being a meathead as usual. Maybe soccer in nz has to crawl out of the oval mentality, ie. physicality, kick and chase, hulk and size!

ah well, my thoughts are with the lads, the coaching staff and NZ football
never easy to take a shellacking like that and these guys will have worked their hearts out and coughed up a lot of money and time to do what they did
i applaud them for it
 
hopefully they have the resilience and perspective to appreciate what they have achieved and to learn from the experience
 
rome wasn't built in a day
is nz football improving, sure it is, but give us more of those artificial pitches please
and some less rain thanks

Goal keeper was left to fight on his own........ couldnt do bugger all with the goals scored.. defence was horrible!!

You are losing a debate and now resorting to your inner and real self, ie. weakness. Seriously, soccer is a great training ground for future All Blacks becacause oval players now know how to control and pass the ball around. Instead, you soccer guys have to stop playing like us, the ovallers.

Tough day at the office for Colvey, but he made it hard on himself by failing to maintain contact with the opposition forwards at times (i.e. ball watching).

KP - Baslaj, 8 - Made a host of wonderful saves and could be heard on the tv screaming at his defense. Only area of weakness i thought is he doesn't dominate his box aerially at all.
 
RB Tuiloma, 8 - generally a very sound tournament, tackled and read the game well, often with little way of support in front of him. Looks particularly good when he ran with the ball.
 
LB Raninga 7 - a natural RB, did well at LB  and also made some nice attacking runs, don't where he was for the Japan game, very surprising to not see him there.
 
CB Rowe 6.5 - generally did very well and forced players to shoot from distance, needs to work on distribution from  the back, and be a bit stronger in the air.
 
CB Lambert 6 - same as Rowe, got caught ball watching a lot against Japan. Better distribution from him though.
 
Jordan Vale 6 - worked hard up top to support Payne, more of a hard working toiler than a flair option. Did ok, but can't recall him creating too uch.
 
Rhys Jordan 4 - barely saw him in any of the games, Mr. Invisible which you can not be as a DM, not surprised he was subbed at half time
 
Edge 7 - Our strongest mid by far, played consistantly well in all games. Distribution was generally very good and he tackled and tracked well. Spen a little too much time on the ground after a fe challenges for my liking... a tad soft maybe??
 
Howieson 5 - touch or a rapist or near equivalent. Not sure how he's picked up a contract at Burnley, didn't do too much at all except one good cross for a goal.
 
Carmichael 6.5 - great hattrick, some nice runs, but did disappear a lot during games and was a bit suspect on defense in supporting his RB. Needs to involve and impose himself more on games.
 
Payne 6.5 - Did well with what he got, which was very little good ball and support.
 
Honourable Subs
 
Colvey 2 - the worst performance i have seen by a player for a long time. Feel bad for the kid, but an absolute mere, why Raninga didn't play is beyond me.
 
Tahau 5 - looked ok with his limited opportunities.
 
Players who will go on in my opinion.
Payne, Edge and Tuiloma (definite in my eyes)
 
Possibly
Baslaj (Look at Gleeson and co, easy to fall off the radar for a while / indefinate) Carmichael, Rowe, Raninga, Howieson
 
As good as it will get

Who is Rowe?

You're overestimating Tuiloma, he's not a very good wide defender, although admittedly he's got a good touch and is decent going forward.

I didn't see the game (I hate Sky TV and the government for not legislating for important sporting events) but I saw the goals on the "Celebrity Gossip Good sorts One Network News"
The Japs movement in and around the box looked good but their goals were of our making. We didn't mark at crucial moments. Our keeper should have taken a straight forward cross come goal. And we let in an own goal.
They just need more pressured games at that level and we will get quite close to the semis in the future.

The way the goals came is irrelevant really, they were on an entirely different level. We could've been hit for double figures there.

How high do you expect a keeper to jump exactly?
