South Island could only claim one player - Cory Brown - and he's at Ole.

The mainland has 25% of the population and only 5% of the places in the squad.

It's tough being a footballer from the Mainland when national coaches are in Auckland. Who was the last national coach from the South Island?

Ian Marshall was the last coach from the South Island.

Unfortunately, Cory Brown is injured at the moment. Happened at the last OLE training. An ankle injury. I hope he recovers before the trip. He is a good young lad and a great player. And as you say, the only one from South Island. Would be terrible not have a single player from SI in the squad.

Considering he's from Nelson ..where are the Christchurch/Dunedin players at?

Exactly Luis. If the 2nd largest football community in NZ can get ZERO players into a Boys U17 World Cup (and only one I think in the last WC cycle); good players are being missed because they don't live in Auckland. Simple as that. Is NZF interested in addressing the issue? Perhaps, but it seems they cannot afford to, even if the will is there.

Went to school with Alex Palezevich. I think he was in the first team in his first year of college. I always really rated him.

Why is Joel Stevens not in the squad?

Or maybe, the best players have been selected and this a bit of a one off in terms of players missing out.

If you can name players who should have made and the expense of those left out, then by all means go ahead so the merits of those names can be argued.

Patterson has pretty big raps on him from his successful trial at Ipswich. Although in the game I saw him play for NZA agains Jordan he looked average. That been said he literally was a boy playing against men then so it might be a little unfair to judge him too harshly.

The Knights brought nothing to NZ football, except for maybe two of our better coaches.

Looking forward to seeing what Beazley can do with this group.

Judging by how he played against Auckland he wasn't picked because he is pants!!

Watched Elijah Neblett play a few Prem games for Birkenhead United this season. Very exciting player to watch with lots of potential.

My understanding is that he did trial for the squad but this U17 group is particularly strong - possibly one of best we have sent to a WC.

Yeah isn't Liam Jordan a 1998 or even 1999? This team is 1996s.

Think he's a 1998. That year is at NZF NTC in Auckland this week. (98 & 99 are grouped for 2015 WC).

I think there are some lads that could consider themselves a bit lucky to be there after seeing them in action at the secondary schools nationals where they were shown up. I think there are some South Island lads that are at least as good as the ones selected, certainly based on the Otago milk cup team this year. To me the standouts are obviously Rufer, Riddenton and Neblet from Birko. There is at least one lad in the squad that going to get a look in at the Nix when they return from UAE.

You lost me there as soon as you said "secondary schools nationals" which is a massive load of horse.

Azza I can't comment on players selected but in terms of process I bet you anything you like those South Island Milk Cup boys have never been looked at by national (Auckland) coaches. Maybe it will take a mainlander (mike mcgarry?) putting his hand up to coach a national team to give South Island kids a fair opportunity. Problem doesn't seem to exist in the equivalent girls groups.

Kudos Capital Football for that. NZF have had zero to do with it. Age groups chosen to fill gap between NTC and National Youth League. Should be a good weekend. Some really notable players missing from CF teams though which is a shame.

Tamupiwa is on Facebook  (but doesn't post much) - says there he lives in Australia ,so if his family only recently moved there, maybe that's why he's unattached?  Born in Zimbabwe. Is a midfielder and played in the qualifiers:

Don't think Tam played 5 games in Vanuatu, but great for the kids to have an online presence.

And, though the ASB Youth League is an u-19 comp., Canterbury has a  superior record in that to any North Island regions (won two of the last four and runner-up in another). Wellington has never made the final. Last season didn't make the Southern Conference final.
Last season's Canterbury ASB Youth League squad - don't know their ages but some must be u-17's? Narrowly pipped by Otago in the Southern Conference final: http://www.asbpremiership.co.nz/index.php?id=14
I can't believe that despite such dominance at u-19 level, Canterbury and the other South Island regions provide only one player to the u-17's.

It's the perennial problem of geography and cost.

Are there other players from the South Island that should be part of the squad - almost certainly, but Auckland and Wellington are always going to make-up the lion's share of the squad and that's simply a matter of geographic convenience and cost (both for NZF, the Federations and the parents).

No conspiracy, just basic economics.

Do you stalk all the U17s on Facey?

Tam's been at APFA in Christchurch. As far as I'm aware he and his family still live in Wellington and have done for at least the last five years.

Off topic: Agree kudos to Capital Smithy. I wonder if NZF feel ashamed or are secretly happy? Shame CF not fielding strongest squads. Some sort of school or other football trip that clashes? I know girls national futsal championships are on THE SAME weekend. What a ballsup.

Yes and Tam lives in Auckland.  He shifted there from Christchurch where he was at APFA to maximise the chances of being picked for U17s.  He's at Westlake Boys college up there.  When last I heard they weren't keen on him playing for a local club as well as the school which may be why he's "unattached", although I would've thought the same would be true of Stuart Holthusen who is also at Westlake Boys, but I see he's affiliated with Onehunga Sports.  Or is that just Winton making sure his alumni namecheck their roots?
