Coached by one of the first XI and the head of the AV department.
New Zealand Men's U-17s
One interesting note is how none of the Nelson Falcons or Nelson College are in the NZ U17 team. Both teams proved to be the best in the country. The Falcons I could understand as the majority of the squad were too old, but there were a couple of players that were key in both teams.

Those players were seen by Jose at NTC camps and ASB Youth.
Yet Danny Hay himself said in the media that some of them should have been brought to his attention but weren't.

Curious. When did Danny Hay say this in the media?
I saw something last week. He referenced how Nelson deserved the game and had a couple of players that he missed from his u17 team.
Saw that too.
IMO the scouting done has been pretty thorough by NZF standards.
What I enjoyed was the Nelson principal having a go at hay and Zoricich and the way they speak to and treat players. I wonder in NZF has any guiding principals around this form of behaviour espeically at age group level.
When is this world cup?
Later October
When is this world cup?
39 days until first game. Final squad to FIFA 21 days prior? U23 eligibility decision deferred...I assume we are still going, unless OFC drops the bombshell.

Where was this written?
Nelson Mail article on the boys win. Found it on stuff.
Apparently there has been very little correspondence with the players as to whats happening and when. There is meant to be a mini tour of Oz with a few games to be played but no details as of yet. Either that or my sauce is no longer in the loop after being very much in the loop for the last couple of years.

A lot of them have been for their medicals, including some who would definitely require FIFA eligibility approval.
You would think that the u-17 World Cup in Chile may be in doubt post-earthquake with some of the host cities badly affected.
The quake was centred off one host city Coquimbo, and also in the earthquake and tsunami zone and badly damaged were host cities La Serena and Vina del Mar. These towns were hit by 15 foot waves with boats now resting on streets in Coquimbo.
Reports on damage to host cities:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-34285841
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/18/us-chile-quake-idUSKCN0RG33E20150918
There's a state of emergency in place in cities like Coquimbo with the military securing the area and one million people evacuated.
Things are looking pretty bad in Coquimbo in this aerial footage taken after the tsunami:
Map of u-17 World Cup host cities on FIFA.com:
http://www.fifa.com/u17worldcup/destination/index.html
Five of the seven host cities are coastal, three directly in the earthquake and tsunami zone.
Even if the stadia in these cities turn out to remain undamaged, other issues such as accommodation, transport, strain on limited resources, emergency laws, evacuations etc. could make it impossible for games to go ahead.
Similar to Christchurch post February 2011 when most scheduled public events were cancelled.
NZ is playing its games in the southern-most venue of Puerto Montt which, although coastal, is a long way (more than 1000 km) from the earthquake epicentre near Coquimbo.
However, the threat there is from a nearby major volcano which began erupting in April after being quiet for 43 years:
http://www.vox.com/2015/4/23/8480313/chile-volcano-calbuco
Details on Puerto Montt, which Wiki specifically compares in climate to Wellington, NZ funnily enough (almost the same latitude): "wet oceanic climate" and cooler than the rest of Chile:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Montt
Largely a population of Indian and German descent. One of the poorest regions in Chile.
Famous in Chilean history for the massacre by the police on government orders in 1969 of impoverished squatters who were occupying unused land near the city. An incident that contributed to the defeat of the right-wing government and the election of Allende's socialists in 1970. Immortalized in a song by Chile's Bob Dylan, Victor Jara, who was himself tortured and murdered in the National Stadium by Pinochet's thugs in 1973. Jara in turn was immortalized by the Clash in the great "Sandinista" album track "Washington Bullets".
There are a number of Kiwis working there in the salmon farming industry who have expressed excitement online about attending NZ u-17's games.
Phew...Our u-17's are off to Chile, no doubt about it:
OFC, NZF to Move Forward Together
The Oceania Football Confederation and New Zealand Football are set to move forward together following a constructive meeting between OFC President David Chung and NZF President Deryck Shaw.
“NZF has a lot it can share with our regional colleagues, and there is plenty we can learn from them as well. We look forward to continuing to nurture those relationships for the overall benefit of football throughout Oceania.” |

SYRIAN U-17 PLAYER KILLED AND STAR PLAYER FLEES COUNTRY
Worth checking out the feature on the Syrian national sides in the August "World Soccer" magazine:
http://www.worldsoccer.com/features/football-in-sy...
Lots of material on the Syrian u-17 side that NZ will be facing.
A very tricky situation politically with the national sides being manipulated by the Syrian regime and used for propaganda.
The national football sides basically represent the Assad regime.
Many players in the Syrian league have been killed in the conflict, others languish in jail after being accused of supporting the rebels.
The government have threatened u-17 players with jail or death if they don't play.
One of the u-17 team was killed by bombing of his city on the eve of the AFC qualifiers.
The team's star player, midfielder Jaddou has fled as a refugee on the dangerous sea voyage to Europe and is living and playing in Germany:
"However, the pressure and the fear of playing football in Syria got too much for the teenage Jaddou.
Earlier this year he tried to fly to Germany, a country he had dreamed of playing in since he was a child, but he was barred from getting on the flight and told that the entire team that was due to play in the Under-17 World Cup Chile had been placed on a no-fly list. It was then that Jaddou’s father sold his house, raising the $13,000 needed to pay people-smugglers to first cross overland into Turkey and then by boat across the Mediterranean to Italy.
The boat was overloaded. More than 130 men and women – young and old, healthy and the infirm alike – were crammed onto the 70-foot long vessel.
Six hours after the boat had left the Turkish coast it began to sink...."
His mother and two younger brothers remain in Syria where Jaddou fears the regime will kidnapp and murder them in retaliation for him and his father fleeing.
Two warm up games this weekend with full squad in camp . Beat Waitakere United 4-1 Friday and lost 2-3 to Auckland City today . Today looked promising . Team fly out Tuesday - wonder when it will be announced ?
Looks to be a few different faces from the Oceania Championship. I guess that's what happens when you have a new coach come in.

In bold are the players that have returned from the Oceania Champs so there are plenty of new faces.
Callum McCowatt out of Wellington I think, not Springs
...but that would mean NZ football is wrong. No.
Congrats all. I think, given recent history, NZF should declare players for whom they have gained exemptions.
Interesting they name the squad the week after the ASB youth league sides have been named, Must be hard for the boys who were in the mix and missed out and now have no football for the summer unless they make a ASB first team
Only one South Islander in the squad - McGarry - and he lives in Wellington.
13 Aucklanders (I include the Sunderland youth goalie Woud who moved there from Auckland in August)
Six from Wellington clubs (Western Suburbs and Phoenix)
One or two of South Island origin like Stroud (who now plays in Wellington) were in the mix earlier in the year.
Seems strange that no players living in the South Island are deemed good enough to make a twenty man squad.

Michael Woud: 1.96 metres at age 16 (same height as me = 6' 5")
Like me, has Dutch ancestry, which explains the height:
http://www.transfermarkt.com/michael-woud/profil/spieler/350347
Makes him the tallest goalie in NZ rep teams for a long time. Must be one of our tallest ever.
NZ has never had a lot of tall national goalies.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hunter Ashworth: another 1.96 m player (centreback)
A new name to me. Just looked him up.
Dual NZ/US citizenship.
Has been playing For Pateadores SC in the South West Division of the US Soccer Development Academy league which includes some MLS youth sides (third place this year behind Real Salt Lake and LA Galaxy u-18's)

Has a brother Pierce (possibly a twin) who graduated from the same class at Laguna Beach High School this year and also played for Pateadores SC. He's a goalkeeper and will play for Stanford University next season:

Pierce also attended NZ u-17 training camps with brother Hunter earlier this year but hasn't made the final squad.
Pateadores Players Signed by College Teams: Hunter the Towering Dude on the Right:
From left to right: Blayne Martinez(UCLA), Jack Kerins(UC Davis), Noah Leong(USF), Luis Leon(UCI), Cole Martinez(UCLA), Hunter Ashworth(USF), Pierce Ashworth(Stanford) not pictured
I think Ceci relocated from the South Island to study in Auckland and be involved in the lead up year. Went to Mount Aspiring school I heard
Whilst I don't care where players come from... I am a little surprised to see no one from Nelson made it given their recent success and Hay saying himself we may have missed a couple players.
3 Mainlanders - McGarry from Dunedin, Ceci from Wanaka, Bell from Chch
I've posted the same on the mpl thread it seems a long time since we've had a lad from Christchurch getting selected for these teams.
I don't think it's visibility I reckon it is we are behind the rest of nz in the men's game in developing good players why are they moving up north to be recognised
As a region we have a lot to think about is our ftc and lack of competition hampering our kids
Although I feel Ben Stroud was very unlucky as he had improved a lot in his time at the Nix
It appears that no one from the North Island outside of Nix (Wellington) or Hay (Auckland) territory got selected. Surely there must be boys from Hamilton, Napier, Tauranga, Palmerston North etc good enough.
As Pete has mentioned, very Jafa heavy...
7 of those players selected either from Sacred Heart (Hay) or Saint Kents (Zorocich).
Of those 7, all but 1 were part of Jose's squad, and Mata only moved to Saint Kents in term 3 this year from MAGS. The new one is Imrie from Sacred Heart
could the same question have possibly come up regarding north shore or central players had thr coaches not changed
