Thats not a retake

Grumpy old bastard alert

02 Jun 21:14

we're going to miss this last one.

02 Jun 21:17

fudge it

didnt deserve that.

02 Jun 21:18

Fudgeen Colombians!

02 Jun 21:21

ALL keepers move before the kick is taken. Ref totally screwed us.

Fantastic effort from NZ.

02 Jun 21:21

Lads must be gutted. Woud looked so strong and never recovered from the retake call. Poor guy

02 Jun 21:21

Now NZF get your shark together and get us playing some more International football!

No point in getting hyped over our performances in Poland for us to keep sitting in the International wilderness for months and years on end...

Its not about moving. Its about having to have 1 foot touching the line when kick is taken.

02 Jun 21:27

Odd sub bringing Conroy on knowing it is likely to go to pens, would have thought Just would be preferred

02 Jun 21:27

Great effort & lots of positives to take away moving forward. Had some good chances in normal time as Colombia did. Thought we were better in extra time but dodged a bullet with their chance near the end.

02 Jun 21:28

Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

Thats a cruel cruel way to lose a footblall match. What a great game of football. Two excellent sides playing top level attacking football.

So proud of those kiwi boys. We were the better side from 30 mins on until the end of the match. The Colombiana were dangerous with quick counter attacks but we bossed the game. Second half we hammered on the door but just lacked that vital break for a goal. After 60 mins we had 9 shots to there 5.

Absolutely gutted. Ref was shiite....they fouled consistently and only got one card.

Tough for Woud to get a clear penalty save wiped out........looked OK to me!!!

So I was right, and they still went to VAR on that - according to what popped up on my tv screen soon after.

That's ridiculous.

02 Jun 21:48

If Wouds save is wrong, then the Colombian keepers were all wrong as well...

02 Jun 22:30

Woud foot off the line. Other had his foot on the line.

But that’s not the important thing from this tournament is it? Look at the clubs those Colombians are playing at. We footed it with them and Uruguay and beat Norway and Honduras. Hopefully this tournament will open the eyes of more clubs when a Kiwi comes knocking.

For me, players who should be playing up a level from where they are now for their ongoing development: Pinjaker, Bell, Just, Singh, Cacace, McCowatt and Wooldridge.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

02 Jun 22:46

There is good news. Most of our boys showed enough to suggest that they will  go on to having good careers as pros. Buckingham has done extremely well.  The Nix better sign their players up to two year deals for the argument sake.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Declan would say losing or winning on pens, is not important at all. What is important is what happened beforehand.

From memory the mad hatter was on record as not even watching the pen shootout, when Western Suburbs lost out to Birkenhead in Chatham Cup final. Like he didn't really care.

Hopefully Nix try to sign Pijnaker. He had a very impressive tourney. Problem I guess is would he be happy playing mostly for the Nix reserves losing every week in the Handy Prem, when his former team ES have just won the same league impressively.

Partly because of this (but mostly because of Edge's influence) I sadly don't see any Ole/ES players signing for the Nix.

Will be interesting to see where McCowatt goes overseas.

Where is he currently?

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

This was a great tournament, positive and confident football by the boys. I hope that sets the bar what we can expect for the future from NZ Football. Today hard to swallow loss, but a good lesson for future performances.

Everyone involved can be very proud and fingers crossed all players get some good offers and continue to work in pro environments.

It's also good to see that some local player can compete on a big stage.

Still at ES I think. Haven't read anything about going overseas as yet.

Too good for Swedish Div 4.

What would help Nix persuade someone like Pijnaker to look at the club, is hanging out with Waine, Elliott, Stensness, Singh & Cacace for a month. Plus of course Buckingham as coach, who has a background with the club, talking favourably of the Nix's setup, future etc.

Awesome that Kopa was there in the crowd supporting his young ex-teammates. He posted some nice video footage on his Instagram.

Didn’t do much to attract attention tho.

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

03 Jun 04:31

McCowatt was surprisingly quiet compared to Just and the like

a.haak

03 Jun 04:33

I though McCowatt made some nice runs and had some good moments, but was a little greedy on occasion.

I think he could be a really good signing for the NIX, but only if we play a system that suits him, short passing and lots of movement and width... not our go historically.

03 Jun 04:37

Gutted for the team, but more proud than anything. They really did play well and look worthy of being there and not some kind of Oceania pity project by Fifa.

All of the starting 11 today showed promise (Waine was a little heavy with his touch) and all a worthy of being in a pro environment where they can further develop their games, if not already in one.

I would sign Bell and Pnjanker straight away, and depending on the system we adopt look at McCowatt.

I thought all the NIX players had good tournaments, Cacace our best easily, and Elliott the most surprising as I thought he might of got caught out playing in that unfamiliar role.

Lots to be excited about moving forward. Really curious to see what our u17's are like now and if they try to play in the same vein. Any standouts in that squad?

Singh wasnt bad either!

Good to see the game being the lead item on TVOne sports news, ahead even of the sportsmen new years honours list and netball final. Pretty sympathetic item about the injustice of Woud being pinged for moving.

Imagine if off the back of it the AWs played the Socceroos at Eden Park, next Sunday afternoon (beautiful day in the City of Sails today). Singh, McCowatt, Cacace all getting 20 min cameos off the bench.

Just for a moment football, would have a higher profile than rugby midwinter in NZ.  Australia play in Seoul this Friday.

03 Jun 08:47

the response from Just after he scored this morning show what belief they really had! Get the ball back to half way some can go at them again!

Yes. But who they might be would depend on who you ask.

Suggest you keep an eye on the U17 thread.

Cacace’s Instagram has been absolutely flooded by Colombians mocking him for the shushing gesture he did after he scored the pen. Thousands of comments across all of his social media, judging from my Year 7 Spanish lessons some of the comments are absolutely disgusting

03 Jun 21:14

He probably understands most of them too, Italian being so similar to Spanish

I'm sure Cacace will get over it.

Most of those comments were probably scribbled from a shanty town barrio in Bogota/Medellin/Cali/Cartagena where life can be pretty grim.

For Libby the future is a nice big fat salary at an overseas club, with obligatory model GF/wife (probably Italian).

Can we stop calling RB/RWB an unfamiliar role for Elliot? He's talked about it as his preferred role and he's spent a year training there for the Nix. Yeah he played further forward in youth football, but that's incredibly common for fullbacks.

Bell and Pijnaker needs Nix contracts ASAP. Really looking forward to future youth World Cups if we can continue to develop this level of talent.

I think the fat salary, overseas club and Italian model provably help him to forget the nasty comments :)

Agree with the above though, when opposition fans start targeting you it means they take you seriously and you're not doing too bad...

Bell is on scholarship in the US at Virginia (NCAA Division I). He shouldn't return at this stage.

Nando Pijnaker would be good as a replacement for Lowry/Fox role.

Bell shouldn't come back, but we should still throw a contract at him in case he wants to.
